WTH?! Why didn't someone tell me Torchlight was a brightly colored cartoon version of Diablo?!

I read that it's being ported to XBLA/PSN next month, looked at the video and then realized it's been out on PC since last year. Played the demo on Steam and I <3 this game! I must have this game...

... except I can't seem to rotate the camera (I much prefer keeping the camera behind my character so I can see where/what I've headed)... and what about saving? The Steam demo doesn't allow me to save, is this save-anywhere or checkpoints?

I grabbed it at the Steam sale before last. exactly what people who love Diablo should be looking for, with fun loot and general pleasantness. I can't answer either of your questions, Toger, as I only played for a few hours (curse you Steam sales) but it's well worth the investment.

I can't decide if I should wait for the XBLA version or grab it from Steam. Rumor has it it'll run about 1200 points and that's less than its current price on Steam of $19.95...

I'm leaning towards console 'cause it'll be on my big HDTV (size matters [Image Can Not Be Found]), although I'll need to see what the controls will be like. Of course if I wait, it'll get pushed out by Dragon Age 2 once I'm back from Europe. Decisions, decisions...

I assumed Torchlight was Fate v.2. Not so?

(yes, I googled. Some think so, while others adamantly deny)

Toger, I am a way into Torchlight. I got it off Steam for $5 and it was a small download, which was perfect for me. I usually don't care for cartoon-like games, but it is well done. I've been away from it for many months, so it will be a relearning process. I think I am at level 11 and just started it up again.

I believe the game saves automatically for you when you enter or exit a level or town or exit the game. When you die, you get a choice for returning to the game, either pay in gold and experience or walk a distance to where you died.

It was made by folk from the original Diablo team and is exactly as you describe. Torchlight is not a perfect game but it's a great diversion, a  Diablo clone with a goofier tone. I'm always surprised how few good Diablo-clones exist. One hand, maybe two, over ten years with hundreds of awful entries. Something about the special sauce must be special.

The save system is Diablo's so think back.  [Image Can Not Be Found] There is no manual save system but not exactly checkpoints either.

Camera rotation: nope. Probably a mod for it but I'll leave that to Armand's gaggle of geese. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I played for a couple hours tonight and churned right through all the skellies, demons and assorted monsters. I feel a bit overpowered right now. The dog is great. He runs back to town with all the stuff you want to sell and I spend the time fishing. I gave him a healing spell when I found a better one and he is casting healing spells all the time now and I don't have to worry about it. I have a couple quests but haven't found any way of completing them yet. Will keep moving on and hope something turns up soon.

Thanks, Pokey. That was exactly the info I was looking for.

I kinda remember hearing about Torchlight when it first came out, but some were saying since they liked Sacred they liked Torchlight... I hated Sacred, so that's probably why I cast aspersions in its general direction last year.

I played Diablo waaaaay back when it first came out, you honestly think I remember the save scheme when I can barely remember what I had for breakfast yesterday, Fink? [Image Can Not Be Found] Too true about finding decent Diablo clones. I've played a number of them and found most lacking that je ne sais quoi of Diablo.

Me not be caring about mods, so I may wait for the XBLA version... by then, Steam may have put it on sale again and I'll buy it. [Image Can Not Be Found]
