Wouldn't it be something if the PS3 had the legs that the PS2 had.  Not likely considering that nowhere near as many people bought the PS3.

I'm with you Gregg.  As of now I'm sitting out this next round of consoles.   Certainly until the inevitable first or second hardware rev.

TLG is officially "on hiatus." Anyone who has heard that term used anywhere knows it's never a good sign.

*EXHALE*

Okay, the comment that it was on hiatus was apparently a mistake! That's one hell of a mistake, but the head of Sony Worldwide confirmed it is still in development. Phew.

HNNNGH. arhgrhrhr. My heart. I can't take this for much longer. Don't they realise we're in love? Maybe that's the problem; they know they'll never meet half of our expectations after Shadow OTC...

I'm so glad I didn't see this until you posted the clarification. Still, at this point, after so much time, I may have to let you go TLG.

This is essentially non-news, so sorry in advance for bothering to post it but... any morsel will do at this point.

An interview went up on GameInformer a few days ago (here) where the following was asked:

With the curtain soon to close on the PlayStation 3 generation, is time for fans to give up hope on The Last Guardian ever coming out?
The team is still there in SCE Japan Studio, [Fumito] Ueda-san is still there, but we are still waiting for the time to reintroduce it.

"Reintroduce it," they say. The scuttlebutt is that this means TLG is now a PS4 title ... we ruminated on that previously here and thought it was too implausible. I still do, unless the primary hurdle Ueda's team was having was a technological limit of the PS3 which honestly seems unlikely to me. These things just get prettier..they don't get much smarter. What could they do on PS4 that they couldn't on 3? We like to say "so many new things are possible blah blah blah" but that's just marketing garbage. All the games we have today could probably exist on Genesis and PS1, they'd just look crappier.

Anyway.. there you have some more non-news. Sorry again for posting to this thread and possibly making eyes twinkle.

Yep, and with longer and more obvious load times, but that's about it.  The idea of moving to PS4 seems completely daft, unless they're targeting it as a launch title or something.  I'd love to be a fly on the wall (with fly-sized universal translater, natch) in those SCE Japan meetings.

Especially since, these days, they can't say graphics are a factor at all. Which is basically what you guys are saying in the first place. The PS4 will look better, sure, but how much better can you get? Not much. It's amazing how things have changed. Every generation we've heard less about graphics because there's less to tell. Anyone remember the buildup to the original Xbox launch? The ping pong ball demos, the things they showed to display its massive graphics prowess? It's barely been a peep this time around.

Internally it might be seen as a good business decision - either to encourage people to switch to PS4, or (more likely) due to the brass naively assuming that releasing any major title for a "dead" console beyond, say, May of next year is a guarantee of failure. Which is stupid since there'll still be more people with PS3s than PS4s at this time next year. Console executives are always too quick to assume the previous generation is unhooked and gathering dust in the basement the instant the next one arrives. They never learn.

To be honest, this is an opportunity for leadership to scrap what they have - throw it all away - and start again from high concept. Whatever is wrong with Guardian's production, it's not going to go away just because of a platform change. And something is evidently wrong. Clean the house and start again. Kill your babies. A financial loss, yeah, but Sony doesn't mind too much when it comes to Fumito Ueda, and rightly so. A single solitary loss leader that draws so much critical acclaim is worth the "wasted" money no matter what sales figures turn out to be. It can't be a broad business model, but if I were Sony I'd treat Team Ico as something unique and costy but worth it.

I'm betting the last of what we saw of TLG was scrapped some time ago. 2010 was the most recent time we actually saw something concretely new, yes? For all we know they've been developing an entirely new concept for 2-3+ years. Typical game development cycle for some teams. I use this as optimism.

I've got to say -- and I'm sure Steerpike will agree with me after what we saw at the EG Expo -- PS3 games still look better than PS4 games on the whole. It was weird. I was having difficulty working out what was 'next-gen' and what was current, the differences are so slight in most of the games we saw from a distance. Frame rates and resolutions were possibly better, sure, but the overall muscle on show wasn't nearly as impressive as we expected.

"All the games we have today could probably exist on Genesis and PS1, they’d just look crappier"

Amen to this.

It's true. We're at a point where graphics just aren't the top bullet any more. A couple of times Gregg and I were standing there and I seriously considered saying "why are they doing another console generation again?"

Maybe I did say that... the weekend is a blur.

Naturally they'll get more horsepower out of this generation's hardware once they get used to developing on it (thing how Uncharted looks compared to The Last of Us), but visual fidelity is so high, it doesn't really matter. On the PC side, we gamers are reduced to hating ourselves for having rigs incapable of running Game X with SSAO set to "ultra." Most people don't know what SSAO is and wouldn't miss it if it were gone (though it does make a major difference in Tomb Raider. Protip: switch "High Precision" off and you'll be able to crank SSAO. That game is stupidly well-optimized. It has no right to look that good and be maxed out on my aging rig).

Does this mean that something else will become the top bullet? Physics? Computationally speaking that's really all there is left. AI is more of a programming challenge; a gazillion cycles won't improve a shitty AI routine. But physics still have a long way to go, and it's sort of exciting to see what developers might do with real realistic physics.

Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.

Regarding optimism about next-generation consoles... Recall that we've barely seen as interesting an implementation of physics in gameplay on consoles since Shadow of the Colossus. Wander's body-swinging, gripping, tumbling haven't really been matched in subtlety of execution except by Niko Bellic's drunken staggering in Grand Theft Auto IV, an almost solely aesthetic, jokey feature.

The only other truly interesting implementation of body-physics that I recall was in the cancelled Xbox 1 game Dead Rush, Treyarch's tragic fall before they were sucked into making nothing but Movie tie-ins, sports titles and every second Call of Duty. Zombies clinging to moving cars, ripping off armour plating to reach inside! Nom. *wipes away a tear for the fallen*

Red Faction: Guerilla stands, I think, as the only non-body use of advanced physics systems we've seen on the 'current' generation/last generation.

With this in mind... Do we really anticipate the giants caring enough to make something new? The mainstream hardware manufacturers, licensers and development studios will not experience a paradigm shift like that until the teenage market stops buying Call of Duty. Hell, we probably have more chance of advanced physics development from the sports genre, if not for the fact so many people still enjoy buying Football management titles -.-

We can live in hope, but I'll be watching the indies. I've not the faintest interest in the PS4 or Xbox 360. My Xbox 360 died years ago and I didn't care to keep struggling with x-clamp fixes. My PS3 gathers dust under a table, with only Demon's Souls tempting me back for one more run.

Consoles. Really. They got boring. The only thing I do with the damned things is play old games via the marketplaces anyway. Castlevania SOTN, Syndicate Wars, Future Cop: LAPD, Metal Gear Solid.

I get more fun from my Gamecube, more frequently, than anything current ._.

Gods, I sound far too much like a grumpy old man for a 25-year-old.

Still. Not. Cancelled.

I feel the need to resurrect this thread basically every time Ueda speaks about the game in any capacity. I dedicate this post to the lying-to-themselves "I stopped caring" crowd. You can fool yourself, but you can't fool me!
