Ben lately has been wanting to play every computer game I play. He's not particularly interested in racing games, like, for instance, the numerous Cars PS3 ports, even though he loves Cars.  This could be because I suck so badly at using the controller.  FYI Cars is a marvelous movie for a young child because it has so little violence and actual meanness.

In any event, this has led to some uncomfortable moments when, for instance, Ben's sitting on my lap while I play, say, Dead Space, and bodies are getting pulled apart and recordings have increasingly desperate people cursing like…well, increasingly desperate people.

So I've hunted hard for games that, while possibly including violence (i.e., Tron 2.0, Half Life 2), aren't necessarily so disgustingly visceral.

One of the games I was hoping would work would be Tron Legacy.  So I ordered it, started it up, and…ack!  A jumping game!  Press alt-a while holding down the 'W' button to leap to a platform while running along the side of (!!!) a wall and throwing a disc to hit a target on the other side of a chasm.  After a ridiculous number of times trying just to handle–forget master–certain jumps, I gave up on it.  It reminds me of the relatively recent (as in past 5 years) Prince of Persia port–which had the same kinds of maneuvers.

Is it that I'm old and lack reflexes in my fingers?  Err I type 100+ words a minute (never mind the actual number you wouldn't believe it anyway).  Is it that I'm using a keyboard?  Is it that I don't have the hours to put in to learning how to use a controller?  Is it that I'm missing something cool that younger people see in trying to push buttons/move controller sticks incredibly quickly?  Or is it just lazy game design, in that developers think all these maneuvers take the place of actual story?

I dunno.  So I went to the one place where I've routinely over the years gotten informed and thoughtful opinions.  What's the deal?

Offhand, Ernest, I'm guessing it's just that it is a bad game. You know how movie tie-ins can be.

I still believe that God intended games to be played with the mouse and keyboard, though with a few (a very few) I'm a bit more comfortable with the controller. You might want to give Batman: Arkham Asylum a try. It has some scenes that might be scary for a little guy but almost no gory violence and it's a heck of a game. I know your feelings on Steam, but at some point in the next two weeks it'll be, like, a penny or something.

You might also try Heroes V. It's not an action-packed game but the lavish graphics and fun fantasy theme would be great to play with a young lad on the lap.

Also Mass Effect and ME 2! The second has kickass combat and no gore. Boobs though. However, I think we can all agree that boobs are Yes.

Second on all Steer's as good games though maybe not ME/ME2 as young kid friendly (I do like boobs and guns, but the world voted against me being allowed to have kids, something questionable judgement, bad influence something something; got the official warning letter in my hanging file).

HoMMV needed serious patching to pull together but it's a return to form for the series. III was brilliant, IV was bad. As mentioned it is purty and a kid will enjoy watching the fantasy critters. The King's Bounty games are dirt cheap on the Steam sale right now; the play is a bit different but broadly in same kind of play with lots of unicorns and big snakes to ogle.

Pity about Disciples 3, third leg of that play style. Series is still most gorgeous of them by miles but it abandoned the play element which made it special and added a truly awful combat engine. [Image Can Not Be Found] 1&2 are also cheap on Steam sales right now; worth it for the artwork if nothing else. Drop dead amazing 2D high fantasy art.

I've heard that the Tron game is rubbish...  what is the Light Cycle stuff like?  If the light cycle arenas/gameplay is ok, I think I'll get the game anyway.  That's really the only bit I'm interested in.

I've not played the recent movie tie-in but Tron 2.0 from 2003 is a great game. The light cycles are the weakest part but heck, light cycle racing is just a game of snake anyway.
