Anyone tried this one out?  It's currently in open beta.  It's an action RPG in the Diablo and Torchlight vein, but with some interesting differences.

I played the heck out of Diablo I and II, but had no interest in III.  Not because I dislike Blizzard and think they're one step above Zynga, but just that this type of game has lost it's appeal.  I couldn't get into Torchlight or Titan Quest for example.  But Path of Exile seemed to have enough of a twist to make it interesting.

Every class shares this huge, convoluted map of passive skills, with each one given a different starting point.  Other than that there's no skill tree as such.  The items you find are the skills, or something.  Also, there's no potions, just flasks which offer various effects and slowly recharge over time.

I tried a few minutes of the beta and wasn't exactly blown away.  It looks kinda terrible, but it is a beta, so that may change.  Ultimately, I'm afraid the click-fest style of action RPG is sorta dead to me now.

A friend of mine has been talking this up, and was similarly intrigued by the web of skills. So far I've been hesitant simply because like, you, the Diablo style lost its luster a while back. Since this is free to play I might give it a try, though. It's an embarrassment of gaming riches right now, I'm not sure if I can wedge this one in. But you're not the first to be interested in it!

Steerpike thanks for mentioning one of the most important points which I forgot:  it is indeed free to play.  And, also importantly, not pay to win.

Well if it's FTP I must investigate. Sounds interesting.

Like you guys I'm not really in love with the Diablo format anymore. Diablo 3 didn't do a whole lot for me, and I haven't played it a whole lot since finishing the normal mode once. Same goes for Torchlight: it was cute and certainly a product of quality, it just doesn't appeal to me that much.

When I do play Diablo 3 I still enjoy it, but when I'm not playing it I never feel the urge to go to it. Like, oh I don't know.....DARK SOULS.

I could see myself playing a stripped down relative of Diablo though. Hell, maybe a stripped down relative of Diablo is the first Diablo itself! ''(Light bulb)''

Oh, and there's no currency of any kind.  You can sell your crappy loot, but instead of gold you receive these components which you can then combine into various items.  It's strictly barter in other words.  The vendor, not you, decides what he's willing to trade for your cast-offs.  This is the items-as-skills part I think.  Honestly I haven't played it enough to see much of that part yet.

Oh wow, I haven't looked at Diablo in years.  I wonder how well it holds up.  Speaking of old Diablo-likes, anyone remember Darkstone? I never got into it, but it was fully 3D when that was still kind of novel.

And thinking of Diablo makes me remember how utterly unique it felt at the time, despite it borrowing from so many sources.  I guess it was a rogue-like for people who didn't care for perma-death or ascii dungeons.
