Lackey: Mrs. Producer! Mrs. Producer, there's a problem!

Mrs. Producer: What is it?

Lackey: The writer has died. There's only four minutes of screenplay, most of consisting of final ravings from a deathbed.

Mrs. Producer: <quick-witted> That leaves us Michael Bay or Andrei Tartovsky.

Lackey: There's $4.65 in the budget.

Mrs. Producer: Well then the die is cast.

This is a very unconventional film. Generally, films involving traps and punishment for the spiritually wandering contain some examples of what happen when you stray. The Cube films always have a teaser to show how malevolent the Cube really is. Not so in Stalker. The technique used is more along the lines of having a long take with sinister music and right where the gruesome death should occur instead keep the camera rolling for another two minutes until everyone's eyes are watering waiting for it and then another two minutes then have everyone lay down in the toxic water in the chemical plant where this was filmed and have a discussion. The ten year old chemical residue bubbles floating on the water were easily the most sinister props in the film. Interesting. Anyone else watch this?

Twice.

I still can't remember much but I loved it. You have to know what you are getting into though. I have friend who has seen it like four times so I watched it with her once. That helps when you are with like souls.

Sadly, the preview was on YouTube but the movies themselves were on http://www.andreitarkovsky.org/

I have it on DVD, but the translation leaves a little to be desired. I've heard that they might remaster and rerelease some of Tarkovsky's best, hopefully with new translations.

Sorry I missed this thread the first time round!
