I guess I can't judge unless I've tried it myself but I'm finding the ever-building hype at an unbearable level. RPS obviously called it their game of the year in a largely self-congratulatory article and... yeah, I'm still struggling to see the appeal. It just sounds like a lot of buzz words to me... user generated this, inspired that, sandbox blah blah blah limitless imagination ... but what the fuck is Mincraft about? Can anyone tell me?
Call me cynical/cranky/asshole but it seems like it's being willed into the status of Best Thing Ever just because it's so anti-mainstream and only cool, indie people "get" it, or something?
It still looks like computer LEGO to me...
If being wrong's a crime I'm serving forever
It is in fact computer LEGO. It's fun, definitely fun, but I am "done" with it. I put that in quotes because I don't mean it as a bad thing. I spent my $20, read the wiki, played for a weekend, and don't see myself revisiting it aggressively. I built a hut that I later turned into a house. I dug a very deep hole. I mean a very, very, very deep hole. I had a good time. Then I "finished." I put that in quotes because etc etc etc.
Armand, I look forward to your thoughts!
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
The buzz will deflate and the game will quickly be forgotten. Little Big Planet Redux. The Movies, same, though that's a bad game and the other two aren't.
The vast majority of players don't want to create their own content but the ability to do so makes a great first impression. Instead of the Chick parabola it's a ski slope: start at the top, fun but fast ride to the bottom. Have a hot toddy at the lodge and go home the next day.
We can hash out time frame and other terms of the bet. [Image Can Not Be Found]
grooowrrrr! [menace menace] rrrrowwwr!
I like the ski slope analogy but I don't see the same happening with Minecraft simply because it'll keep growing, unlike LBP and The Movies which were inevitably released and left to rot. Minecraft is constantly evolving at the feet of the players rather than in a vacuum sealed development studio so I expect many great things to come from it in time. It's also worth bearing in mind that Notch co-developed Wyrm Online so he's got experience with MMOs and that alone is food enough for thought. With the money that Minecraft is earning and the sandbox nature of it I see no reason why Minecraft couldn't eventually become an MMO of some sort. It's already got enough followers, whether they're active players or not.

That's pretty much my thoughts exactly. I need some context or motive for my actions or else I'm just pissing about for no good reason. My 'pissing about' might be another's 'playing' though so of course it's all subjective. Armand's guide does a great job of framing the opening moments of Minecraft so that's well worth checking out when he releases the beast into the wild -- it's also a lovely looking thing to boot.
His bankroll is a wild card but without a Counterstrike scale break out mod it's going to end up a trivia answer. Steer's experience is a great example of the ski slope. MMOs are the graveyard of game releases: they require a dedicated professional team iterating and creating content long term. Making Minecraft a persistent multiplayer game split over many servers with different mods...
...fascinating seeing Minecraft alongside Love out in the world. Probably a GDC presentation in there somewhere.
I'm not dumping on Minecraft at all. It's a damn nifty bit of kit, the newest bestest Gary's Mod, but while I hope I'm wrong I'm still going to take the bet. The amount he's made of it already is stunning.

Considering the games been out over a year (in alpha, but still) I think the bet is already won. A year and a half after release it keeps growing, where as LBP lasted (in your words) only a few months.
And as I said in our discussion on the subject, where as little big planet is on console and thus "stuck" in the state it's released, Minecrafts already been modded many times over.Mods build upon playability. And only the free version is all about making stuff. The paid version is a very different game.
There is no bet to be made. It's already a success.
Hey everyone. I wasn't able to put this up till now, but this is my 17 page illustrated pdf guide to MineCraft. I made it with the old 80's-90's game manuals in mind. Lots of pictures, storytelling elements, that sort of thing. Even if you don't play MineCraft, I hope you get a kick out of this. Below is a sample picture and the link.

Thanks for the comments guys! I made some spelling and tech corrections to the thing, plus greaty reduced file size (only 10 megs now.) Feel free to re-download if you wish.
Also, I regret I didn't call this discussion MineCraft! Someone had to DIG it up. You see what I did there?
Yeah, I'm a nerd.
I already told Gregg and Fink, but just to share with the rest of you. Kotaku picked up mu manual and published it on their site! Yayness! Here is a link.
