So many bits in that statement to object to. Could we maybe get a "F*** Ubi****" smiley?
Edit: On second thought, forget that request. If we got one of those then Steerpike would want a "F*** Bob** Kot***" smiley. And that would be a very slippery slope.

Yeah, things would go south very quickly if there were too many F*** smilies out there.
The whole permanent internet connection thing is offensive and an epic fail in terms of copyright. While I'd originally thought that this might be a harder one for the script kiddies to crack, there's been no indication of that being the case. Instead, they're either DDOSing the servers whenever a game comes out or just issuing cracks within days. Not a single thing has been accomplished to cut piracy.
You wanna cut piracy? Cut prices.
Anyway, the good news is that Ubi is already quietly backing off from this absurd anti-piracy effort. R.U.S.E. doesn't use it, and the company "retains the right" to not use it when they want with other titles. To me that suggests a quiet death and burial a few months down the line.

Maybe I should start preparing the south just in case F*** smiles multiply beyond our ability to manage.
I don't understand why companies don't cut prices to combat pracy. Hit consumers where it hurts, the using a reward system of pattern-changing behaviour. How much do companies spend on anti-piracy measures, including law suits? Could that money be pumped back into a product to make it significantly cheaper, so that it becomes easier to be a consumer instead of a pirate?

DLC and achievements won't stop piracy. Once the publishers do what I expect them to do - release $60 games that have maybe two hours of content then charge $10 a pop for months for "optional" DLC to complete the game - piracy will spike again and the indie movement will become the mainstream.
Nothing will stop piracy. Just like nothing will stop shoplifting. There will always be piracy. To repeat the refrain, treating legitimate customers like criminals is arguably the worst way to combat it.
Both sides spout theories and statistics that can't be proven, like the claim that those who pirate were never going to buy anyway, or that Game X or Y suffered a Z% piracy rate, which ate into revenues W much. Ubi is hurting itself and its image with this scheme, just as publishers that depended on StarForce did. Sadly, though, the people who'll actually refuse to buy because they're offended by some anti-piracy measure is incredibly small. And the publishers know it, so they go ahead with these draconian systems that cost money and don't work because for some misguided reason, they're convinced that it's the way to go.

RPS (and ShackNews) are reporting that Ubi has dropped their draconian DRM for Assassin's Creed 2. You still need to connect upon install and when you first boot the game.

I would venture to say that many who pirate have never, would never and will never have pay the current asking price for a new release. My eyes glaze over when I see these 50.00 and 60.00 price tags though I have ponied up for full sticker price a few times in the past. But I knew I was getting around an hour of gameplay per dollar. But for a quickie 7 hour game...uh, no.
Oh, NOW they do this. I was mightily tempted to buy AC2 when Steam offered it for $15 during their sale, but my greed over a nice price was tempered by the DRM thing, so I didn't buy. Shit. Now I'm going to NEED to buy it eventhough I haven't yet bought a controller to make it easier as I mention in another post. I did a bunch of post-christmas shopping for myself, and do not intend to buy more - at least this month. But I've got to give Ubi a bit of grudging credit for this smart move.
