So with the birth of our second child, a daughter, on Feb. 14, I stayed home for a few weeks and had a chance to play some games:
Mass Effect (ME)–I wasn't that impressed, and don't get me started on the idiotic romance options;
ME2–made playing ME worth it; best game writing since Planescape Torment.
Now I'm playing Dragon Age: Origins, with Awakening waiting to be installed. The idiotic romance options still are present, but the game generally seems deeper than ME2. Profoundly reminds me of Ultima Underworld/UU2 and of course NWN and BG/BG2, only darker and with spruced up graphics.
Games still to play:
Fallout 3, with the various options & a variety of mods;
Demon's Souls–started, died, then haven't turned on my PS3 since.
Bioshock 2. After listening at work to Gavin Byars' The Sinking of the Titanic so many times, this doesn't have quite the same attraction as it might have. (FYI YES! Buy it! Listen to it!)
Games to finish:
Penumbra part 2 still to finish–it's atmospheric and scary! I like!
That…what was it? A Half-Life 2 mod I gushed about weeks ago? The one that was totally bizarre and freaky? After reading the script for it, I was a little disappointed, as it just made no sense, even internally. No matter how insane a creative world may seem, it must make internal sense. This is the lesson I'd impart to the creators. But given that I can't even remember what it was called….And yes it was wildly terrific, anyhow.
Still never played that first Chernobyl game. I wonder if I ever will. And now SP's saying Meto 2033 is good. Another one I'll never get around to.
2 hour's a night's about what I got. I'll get to spend the rest of my life being a dad and playing games. Sounds like a good life, huh.
Oh! And our renovation is done! Oh! And the house didn't blow over when a big storm blew through! Which I take as a good sign!
And we got the chance to invest in a company that may, dare I say it, actually make us rich! A long-time friend/internet starlet whose name would dazzle you let us invest in an angel round….At the moment, based on the offers to buy, we're looking at a return of 30:1. He's conservatively estimating that our returns may be far higher. Who would have thought that the second half of my life would turn into such a marvel? But I digress.
Congratulations on Baby Ernesta, Ernest! Born on Valentine's Day... enough to give a father ulcers. ; )
Congratulations also on your renovations, Ernest! You are one of many Tappers undergoing house changes right now. I hope the whole experience wasn't too painful, or at least that the payoff was worth it.
Congratulations further on your upcoming riches, Ernest! You may not realize this, but as a long-time member of the FFC/Tap community, you are responsible for a tithe should you become wealthy. Just a small tithe. Make the checks out to me personally; I will see to it that they go into the silo fund.
Congratulations beyond that on having some gaming time, Ernest! Heaven knows you've earned it - you've been ridiculously busy since, like, 2004. Take a load off and dig into that backlog. Is there any chance of house husbandry?
Glad to hear you're well. : )

What with your new baby and all, I figure it'll be some years before you can use that PS3, and by then it'll be out of date, so you might as well just hand it over.
What I meant to say: Congratulations! I'd love to see a pic, if you're willing to post one.
Congrats Sylvester Ernest!
I know the feeling! Me and my partner are currently renovating our house and have been for the last 7 months so time has been all too scarce. I'm hoping we'll be in over the next month however.
Incidentally, I'm yet to start Penumbra: Black Plague having shat a brick playing the first. With the summery evenings creeping in I don't expect to play this until the fall now - horror games aren't the same when it's daylight.
S.T.A.L.K.E.R. Clear Sky is installed and modded but I haven't had a chance to start it and Demon's Souls still hates me. That HL2 mod wasn't Dear Esther or Korsakovia by any chance? I couldn't get along with the latter at all. I'm yet to play the former despite hearing big things about it.
That's it! Korsakovia! I understand what they were trying to do, but because of the lack of internal coherence, they didn't quite get there. But man I loved playing both of them. I gotta try The Void and that other one some time. Yeah right. All my free time.
I still don't have any. Working in the courts and dadding.
The thing about the Penumbra games is that so little happens that they're all foreboding. The tension gets ferocious.
And hi ya Jen and Toger and SP! It is so good to see my old friends. 🙂
Congrats Ernest on all of the good news coming your way! I know what you mean about a general lack of time to get through some of these games. It's funny cause even though I'm single, no kids, no real responsibilities (outside of work which demands a lot), I still seem to lack free time? What do I do with my time? I just don't know, perhaps I will have to think more on this. [Image Can Not Be Found]
Semantics!
Which reminds me: I started that shadow of the colossus game, got stomped by the first giant, gave up. I started Demon's Souls, died twice, gave up.
What am I doing wrong with these console games that's keeping me from falling in love with them?
Meanwhile I'm still processing up BG/BG2. And I finally got all my Fallout 3 mods installed and working. So obviously I'm desperate to play games but.
Ernest, my pet, Demon's Souls is all about dying. There's a couple of threads here (okay, maybe only one) about the dying - apparently, you need to die to play. Some people hereabouts like dying. A lot. You'll notice that I haven't ponied up to play it no matter how intrigued I am. I am a combat weenie. [Image Can Not Be Found][Image Can Not Be Found]

Spike? If you want, we could maybe conceivably start a topic in Bollocks wherein I install Fallout 3 mods in tandem with you. Not that I want to play Fallout 3 or mod it, but I could. Conceivably. As it's already installed & sitting with my last save from over a year ago plus four unplayed expansions (thanks to you).
Mostly I'd get your back as you learned about the Mod Manager (same as in Morrowind & Oblivion) and omods if that's what it uses. And how & where to put mods & activate 'em. If you're interested.
Your task – first – would be to study the mods, look at "best of" lists and ratings, and find some mods that interest you. Personally, I never mess with mods that aren't top of the heap, highly rated, and loved by many. Anything less may be broken, buggy and break your game install and/or corrupt your saves. Sounds good, Yap. I've looked at these: http://www.fallout3nexus.com/d.....4730 They seem to be liked by the Bethesda people.
This site was recommended by a moderator in the Bethesda forums. They are checked by the Planet Fallout moderators. http://planetfallout.gamespy.c.....mods/list/
I was thinking of story/quest type mods instead of just textures or weapons, etc. I don't need to be tougher, and I think the game looks good as it is. What I want are new challenges. What do you have in mind?
I read a bit of the Fallout 3 Mod FAQs at Bethesda. It's gonna take me a while to read, and get comfortable with, the load of material there. But since I have officially completed all of F3 I don't need to worry too much about messing the game up.

That 3-parter quest mod sounds perfect.
What I want is the vegetation mod, the one that says it's been long enough, plants should be growing again (not forests or woods, but some flora, in some areas). Lazy me doesn't know what the mod is called though.
Probably a cheat that stops weapon/armor deterioration – I can't stand lugging those multiples around & repairing stuff (my memory is fuzzy, is that how it's done in this game?). I may already have such a mod installed. [Image Can Not Be Found]
Usually the first things I seek are better textures, faces, hair & bodies, armor that will fit my restyled bodies. Then light effects – night windows & lamps, sun & sky. Improved and/or more varied vegetation. This time though, vanilla default is good enough for me.
I'm going to start an F3 mod topic. It will document my bumbling as I learn what I need to learn to mod F3 to give me some more story and some more quests. For now, here's what I gleaned from about 2 hours of reading over the last 2 nights:
I need to download 7zip. Apparently it does more than Stuffit Expander does. I'll read more on that later.
Then I need to download the Fallout Mod Manager (FOMM). Latest version apparently does alot of the installation/ordering/etc. work for you.
I get the impression that it makes more sense to download a gob of mods that you install at the same time, thereby making the game all that much newer. I'm gonna have to keep track of the size of the mods I choose. I've only got 6GB free in Windows (up from 3GB last week). I'm trying to get through a few games, that were downloads, to free up some more space.
Getting way ahead of myself: after installing the F3 add-ons, and then the Zeta DLC it was easy to know where to go/what to do to start the new stories. I will be installing mostly story/quest mods, so after installation, etc, and after starting the game up, how will I know where to go and what to do to start on the new stories/quests?
Thanks for the support, Yap. This should be fun.
