Imagine my surprise when I realized I was reading a book  about video games: Extra Lives; Why Video Games Matter  Tom Bissell.

It can only match my surprise when I awoke one morning and discovered that Jesse Ventura was my governor.  I must say that video games have been a better experience in my life than Jesse Ventura.

Only a few close friends know I do this  (play video games)  and they all keep asking me if I am still playing bridge  --  an acceptable game for someone my age. I am still playing bridge but the truth is,  I love video games more.

And reading this book helped me a bit to understand why.   You might want to give this book at look.

Kay, I got the disbelieving looks when people in high school learned I played bridge. "That old lady game?" So you're fine [Image Can Not Be Found]

It's a great book that's really helped "the cause."Bissell points out the value and importance of games in a way that doesn't seem combative or defensive; one hopes that it will reach across some lines. Tappers such as yourself, Kay, who play bridge and video games, are ambassadors to a whole new populace for gaming.

Whereas some get together to play bridge, others get together to play Left 4 Dead. Still others may get together to huddle around a complex board or tabletop roleplaying game. Play is sacred and part of the human equation.

Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.

Yes.  I had a supurb professor at my little college in northern Ohio (Oberlin) who gave a lecture (in the course I was taking about Dante's Divine Comedy) about how important play is.  Not just for kids but for adults also.   And how the most important things that we do are wrapped around with the symbols of play.   Like costumes.   Justices on the supreme court have robes to play their part and I could etc etc etc.   But you already get it.
