This one looks like it would be a little bit of light fun - Attack Squadron, which is an X-Wing/Tie Fighter dogfight sim. It's an online game, and will probably be pretty limted in scope one would think. But it's meant to be free, so what the hey!

I'm still sad that 1313 was cancelled. That one had potential at least. I haven't heard anything about new Star Wars games beyond this Rogue Squadron-y one you mention, Jarrod. Well, not true, I heard there's a new Star Wars Battlefront which also has promise, but will probably just be Battlefield Star Wars edition. Then again, that's not so bad. Please let there be an ewok faction..

It's not been a drought, it's been, like, a void. Solid single player story driven space combat seems just nonexistent. The last one I remember playing is Tachyon: the Fringe.
Well, I did play Project Sylpheed for maybe a minute but that doesn't count.
I remember years ago Bethesda was working on one called The Tenth Planet that looked interesting. This was Daggerfall time period, though, that's how far back you have to look for the genre's heyday! Of course, it was cancelled. So.
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
Some people would argue Freelancer, though it's a little different in principle, genre-wise. And the gameplay got tedious. I usually think of Freespace as "story-driven", although not in a way that it really involves characters so much as ships and empires. Tachyon may have been the last one that really put your character center stage, or possibly X-Wing Alliance, I can't remember which came first.
This year's Strike Suit Zero was actually really really good, though. Worth checking out if you need something light to hold you over until Star Citizen.

Oh, also, I went to the movies today and saw a couple of Disney's ads that talk about your "Disney side", that is, basically, remembering and calling back to Disney movie moments. And one of the ads was a guy acting like Darth Vader. I don't think I quite UNDERSTOOD that Disney owns Star Wars until that moment.
