Hello, just a warning to all here who buy games from Desura. They have been having issues for months now in paying out the developers in a reasonable amount of time for games sold. Now the parent company has filed bankruptcy. Seems like bad news for the developers and the customers who have purchased games and built up a digital library (that would be me).
For now I plan on avoiding Desura for the time being until this gets straightened out. Too bad, I like seeing game portals that support the independent devs. To not pay them what they're owed though just sucks.
That's a pity. Lots of gamers prefer to use independent services like this over Steam, and of course there's also the fact that many independent titles don't ever turn up on Steam.
Have you tried GOG Galaxy, Lakerz? It might suit your shopping preferences, or at least be a fair alternative to Desura.

It's hardly a 'service' but itch.io is a tremendous site for proper indie stuff. It's not Desura I know, but it's a really open, transparent and relaxed portal for all kinds of content. Failing that, GOG is fast becoming my preferred service these days. Those chaps are doing some great things and my hopes are high for Galaxy.
Oh yeah, I read about itch.io somewhere. It's like the Burning Man of digital marketplaces. Probably can't replace Desura precisely, but it's somewhere to start.
My own loyalty to Steam comes largely from the fact that it got there first. I've never had any complaints about the system or service either, which helps, but I stay with Steam for the same reason I stay with Comcast. My GoG library is quite modest, but it's been a great source of old classics to revisit. And Galaxy is shaping up to be a really robust service.

I like GOG a lot, have built up a decent digital library of classic games there. I'd recommend the service to anybody. I've used itch.io a few times as well, mostly to download a few indie games and donate a modest sum. I hope it continues to gain popularity.
Desura was a nice portal, but this Bad Juju company that bought it ended up being a sham. From what I've read, sounds like the company that sold Desura to Bad Juju never received the $500,000 they were owed. As soon as Bad Juju acquired Desura they had the immediate goal of stiffing everybody and ransacking the coffers to stuff their own pockets while knowing bankruptcy was the end game. Total shady guy who runs Bad Juju. I hope he finds himself cursed for life for being such a dick.
I've already gone through the trouble of downloading copies of the games I bought at Desura to my hard drive just in case.
I also like steam, but they are not necessarily indie friendly. The new 'refund offer' steam has in place has been causing havoc with some indie game devs in the amount of people who play the game to completion then ask for their money back.
GoG is tough to beat for sure. The work they do in making old games playable on today's hardware is worthy of praise and I'm glad they're able to make a profit from it.
I imagine this whole returns thing on Steam will take a few iterations before they get it "right". It's the elephant in the room whenever you talk about digital-only games. I think they've made it less of an issue simply because they are so aggressive with sales.

What I really appreciate about GOG -- aside from all the other stuff it does -- is that they actually make an effort to reengineer old games so they run on today's hardware. Sometimes it's simple, like a CPU throttler or a switch that tells the installer to ignore the NT kernel ID. Other times... not so much.
It's not perfect, but it's better than nothing at all and probably as good as could reasonably be expected. There's games that would be lost forever without GOG. Most people don't want to run virtual machines just to get DOS games working.

Exactly. It's a service that people obviously value. Let's see, do I want to troll forums and fiddle around with DOSBox settings for hours, or pay $5 for someone to do the heavy lifting for me? To ask the question is to answer it.
Anyway, I hope the folks behind Desura who got screwed, if that's actually the case, come out on top.
