This just went live 5 minutes ago on IGN: http://ca.ign.com/videos/2013/.....inute-demo
I am cautiously full of glee.
*Edit #2: Oh, there is a Q&A video too: http://ca.ign.com/videos/2013/.....rk-souls-2
Edit: Viewing complete. The gameplay still has a heavy Dark Souls look to it, no doubt they're using a slightly enhanced version of the same engine. Obviously they weren't going to show many areas, and they didn't, but I was mostly trying to pick up on small things.
Interesting things I noticed:
-No estus flask was seen...but the original trailer did say the player was Undead, so it appears Undead have other ways of healing: to heal now it looks like you drop some type of stone item; there are still bonfires, so they will probably work exactly like estus and not like grass.
-They again changed the wording of fog gates. Demon's Souls had "Enter the fog," Dark Souls had "Enter the white light," and Dark Souls 2 now has "Enter the mist." Just a curious little difference.
-The player's shield has 2 boxes beneath it, leading me to assume shields will now be socketed, or allow for some type of upgrade customization to them. That would be very useful.
-If I read it correctly, magic appears to operate the same as well, in that there are a limited number of casts; there is again no mana bar. It said L1: 15 I think (unless my eyes are broken), but since the L1 button I assume is still used to raise your shield, perhaps that meant Level 1 spell? Spells will now be upgraded? Interesting!
-FromSoft are still HUGE trolls. The player in the demo walked by countless items and didn't pick any of them up; and the one time he did I didn't see an item name pop up anyway, so they've intentionally obscured that.
-The most interesting thing to me was the HP/Humanity circle: In Dark Souls it was simple in that in displayed your soft humanity and told whether you were human or hollowing. Now it appears to be representative of some kind of day/night cycle, judging by the image of a crescent moon and a sun. The sun, of course, was a strong theme in Dark Souls.
I know this game can't be as revelatory as the first was, but damn if I'm not still excited for it anyway. At the end of the day it's more Souls universe, and I'm not complaining.

Absolutely gorgeous. The lighting and shadows look great - which never hurts for an atmospheric game like Souls. I'm getting enthusiastic about it as well.
The combat, in terms of the animations, does look similar. It doesn't appear as if they've made it more button-mashy or twitchy. I get the impression that they're going for more variation in environment and enemy interaction.
It also doesn't appear that they're trying to make it easier. Less obtuse perhaps? I'm fine with that so long as the sense of discovery and mystery isn't spoiled.
Overall I'm pleased by what I see. I think this will be a rare day 1 purchase for me.
Rule #2: Double-tap
I just watched the Q&A. I found myself nodding (yes, yes) throughout. I like what he had to say about pretty much everything. And although the answers were sometimes vague, it seems as though they're taking what was great about DS1 and refining it. He specifically said they're not introducing many new concepts. If they tell a more direct story while keep the defining elements, then I'm all in.
The animations will be mo-cap apparently - I can tell now there's a difference and it looks great. My inner nerd is pretty hyped.
Rule #2: Double-tap
I just wonder, since it looks like it will be a late 2014 release, will this be a PS4/New Xbox exclusive? Or will there also be PS3/360/PC versions? Or will it not be on next-generation hardware at all? I suspect it could be on all 5. Maybe even Wii-U??
If so...can they make cross-platform play possible? This would greatly enhance its staying power, obviously, if there were one giant online community. But...PC...hackers...eugh. So maybe not. At the very least cross-play between PS3-PS4 and 360-NewXbox would be essential to keeping player bases together. This is all assuming it launches for all these systems.
In any case, I thought the interview was reassuring as well. I think all the "accessibility" talk has been largely due to mistaken translations. I think they mean making things like finding covenants (Darkwraith, Dragon, anyone?) more accessible, in a literal sense. Not the core mechanics.
If being wrong's a crime I'm serving forever
I know they're planning a PC version at least, don't know about the PS360. It's possible, though. Technically, it'd be fairly easy, honestly.
Lots of people think that the Souls games use proprietary technology, but they're actually powered by the PhyreEngine, a fantastic free cross-platform framework Sony developed. Looking at this (exciting!) video it's clear DS2 will also be a PhyreEngine game, but I'm not sure what Sony's schedule is for updates. Even if it doesn't update for next-gen platforms right away, it should be relatively easy for FromSoft to port assets to the next version. Since Phyre has build support for practically every system in the universe, cross-platform play would be technically plausible. Will the developers lock each other out again? Sony-to-Microsoft, probably. But Xbox720-to-Windows? Maybe not! No particular reason it wouldn't work.
I notice that GFWL subscribers/friends show up on XBL, at least what they're playing does. I'm not sure if that works the other way. But the more cross-platform it gets, the better.
And damn, that dynamic light...

Apparently there will be no "Easy Mode." Thank you Yui Tanimura!
EDIT:
Bonfire warping will be available from the beginning. Not yet sure how I fell about that one.
Weapon upgrading will be more straightforward (whatever that means) with less grinding required. I don't love grinding, but I also don't want to lose the challenge of actually improving my gear either. If they make it challenging but in a less repetitive way, then I'm all for it.
Oh, so much to speculate on! It's torture I tell you!
Rule #2: Double-tap
I assume you may have already seen this interview, Botch: http://www.gametrailers.com/vi.....k-souls-ii
That's where they mention removing tedium, I think in that interview mostly referring to walking places versus warping. I feel that DkS struck a perfect balance; while the game world is always wide open from the start you had that degree of difficulty by having to walk everywhere. I think after Anor Londo was the perfect time to introduce warping to not really open the game up, but just to speed your travel time since the game now says "okay, you've traversed many of the early challenges, now you can warp."
I'd be fine if they didn't really change it at all. If anything, I actually think the game has too many warp points now (every bonfire in Oolacile is a bit much...and it clutters the bonfire list).

Also, apparently Videogamer.com has gained the knowledge that Dark Souls 2 will be current gen only. I wouldn't mind that at all.

Poor Tanimura. The little guy looks like he's under so much pressure. It didn't help that all the interviews went like this:
"How can you possibly follow up on the awesome-ness that is Dark Souls?"
"Do you feel pressure to perform, considering how, you know, orgasmic Dark Souls was?"
"Did we mention how awesome Dark Souls was and how puny and insignificant you must feel right now, hmmmm?"
I also thought putting warps after Anor Londo worked well. Want to warp? Work for it. ENB pointed out that those slots under the shield could just represent the balance of your item quickbar.
Also, servers!
EDIT:
Also, also, Xtal I noticed the demo player walking past items as well. FromSoft are indeed a bunch of trolls, and I love them for it.
Rule #2: Double-tap
Warping at every fire... I can live with it, but I'm with you guys. It never really took that long to walk anywhere in DkS, and the idea of earning the power to warp really sat well with me. In general I oppose careless integration of fast travel because it tends to break up the experience. Give me fast travel like Morrowind's - something you pay for, different conveyances go to different places, and integrated into the world (this versus the click anywhere on the map and zip to it, like the bad Elder Scrolls games).
Generally it does look like the "accessibility" they're adding will be smaller points; that they're not diluting the overall flavor of Dark Souls. That's very gratifying!

Box art below. I didn't like the NTSC cover of Dark Souls that much, mostly because the other cover was 1000x better. For some reason, the fact that this cover is near identical to the Dark Souls NTSC one...I actually really love it. It's almost like a fuck you to...no one?

Just got the official numbers, by the way - Dark Souls sold 2,367,000 units, of which 692,000 were the Prepare to Die edition (which is to say full versions of the game including the Artorias of the Abyss DLC). Numbers are from From Software executive director Eiichi Nakajima.
2.3M units is quite good, and this puts to bed a lot of speculation about sales numbers, estimates of which have ranged from 1.5M to 2.8M. We don't have a PC-specific breakdown since Steam does not release precise sales numbers, but it's safe to assume that 65% or more of those Prepare to Die sales were PC.

Good for them! So what is everyone's platform of choice this time around (assuming you've bought in. You've bought in right? It's obviously going to be awesome right?) I'm pretty sure it will be released on PC/PS3/Xbox. I'm torn between PS3 and PC. The only thing that makes me hesitant about going straight to PC is the inevitable cracking.
Rule #2: Double-tap
I've little to add. I hoped for something a little more decisive in a sequel, or better yet another standalone game in the same vein, akin to the split between Demon's and Dark...
... But a note on gaming history for ye; remember this is FROM SOFTWARE, creators of the long (and rather good) Armored Core series among other things. They have a history of progressive minimal-alteration, content-expanding sequels and mini-sequels. I suspect they may be following the old habit in this case - so this may not be the last we'll see of the Souls.
I enjoyed this video from the Escapist: http://www.escapistmagazine.co.....Dark-Sales
Praising the rationality of Dark Souls' developers/publishers, and the irrationality of others'.

It's true, you can't always love what Jim Sterling has to say, but that video nailed it. Why is 2.3 million copies a good thing? Because the game was planned and budgeted such that 2.3 million copies would be a good thing. Look at all the Kickstarter games. Those guys will be thrilled if they sell 100K copies beyond their early pledges, because if they planned it that way, that'll be a huge plus.
Eventually the big publishers will realize this.
Engines are typically the loss leader in development. If you insist on creating your own engine, expect to spend a couple million dollars and an extra 2-3 years in development. Just ask the STALKER people. Meanwhile Souls doesn't just use a licensed engine, it uses a free licensed engine that does the job and looks great. There's a reason so many developers use Unreal!
Beyond that, as Sterling (and Meho on the main page) said, forget the Hollywood talent, do hair physics only if they're necessary, and focus on making a good game rather than a blockbuster. That almost always succeeds.

One thing I plan to do with Dark Souls 2 is avoid recourse to wikis. I hate to miss things in games so I'm often tempted to look up a wiki. Dark Souls in particular has many hidden aspects, so I'm even more tempted. But I do this because I typically don't like to play through games multiple times. However, Dark Souls is one of those rare games that I have played through again, and again, and enjoyed every moment of it. So with that in mind, if I miss something the first time it won't be a big loss.
