I have an anecdote!

All games politely offer the ability to invert the y axis. All games except  Myst V: End of Ages. I was working a lot at getting better at Battlefield 2 multiplayer at the time and I always played with the y-axis properly inverted in the way of all higher intelligences. No worries, I thought, Myst is a slow game, I'll just work it out patiently and go back to normal in BF2. But once you fiddle with that sort of thing, something breaks, right there in your mind, and it cannot be undone. I was stuck in limbo where neither scheme worked. I decided to commit to the non-inverted mouse and spent weeks dying looking up at the clouds or down at my shoelaces at the most inappropriate times.

QFT.  Must have been all those hours with F-15 Strike Eagle which burned my synapses into place.

I find that inverting the y-axis has a very peculiar spot in my function, because I have to do it if I'm flying something (which I can easily blame on the likes of TIE Fighter or, on consoles, Rogue Squadron), but I've never ever ever been able to unify that with the way I control camera in first/third person games.  If I know I'm supposed to be flying a Hercules fighter, down (or back, rather) is up.  If I'm Master Chief, down better be fucking down.

Right there with you, Dix, and I'm damned if I can explain the neural difference. If I'm flying, invert. If I'm not, don't. Where my carefully constructed reality falls apart is when you're asked to swim. My brain can't figure out whether it's Garrett or a Strike Eagle. It's horrible. Usually I freeze and sink to the bottom.

I just only play games where water means instant death.  That or where water means you just keep walking like normal but everything has a blue tint.
