Windows Live is driving me batty. I wish I could just install a game and play. The game installed fine and I signed in. I got to a box that said an update for Live was required. A box came up and a bar went across quickly. Then five minutes later the box disappeared and a message saying wait while Live sign in was configured. Then back to desktop. I've tried four times and still end up at desktop. Is the update the same as the 270MB patch I see online? Maybe I could just download that and try to proceed, or is it a different update?

Pokey, I had success with the same idea two years ago while trying to play Red Faction. I did find the same patch online and installed it manually as it would repeatedly tap out to desktop during the in-game installation. Can't say you'll have the same success, but hopefully their ineptness will be nothing if not consistent and dependable year after year. I would go with the most recent version you can find.
Edit: This may allow you to update outside the game itself. A link to a 'GfWL' update via the windows update mechanism.

Thanks, Helmut. I had downloaded the patch from Gamershell and installed it. That seemed to work and now Ver 1.1. It still went through the update necessary and back to desktop. I tried a manual update to Live but it required SP3 for XP. Installed that and the Live update. Started the game and it stops immediately with an error. I've done a lot of reading but no solution. I may try an reinstall with no game patch.

I had my first run in with GFWL last night after starting Bioshock 2. My god, I see what people mean. I found a way of disabling it but I'm not sure there's a solution for Batman AA.

Quite a few people seem to think that having an offline account is the best way of working around GFWL. Still a pain in the ass though.

That's a good tip. I stopped buying GfWL games, but I'll try this if I ever launch RF again. What's up with the overly aggressive 'object' insertion when trying to post a youtube link?

I didn't realize that I could save in the game with an offline account. I'll check into that. I watched the video, but unfortunately it doesn't have any sound and hard to follow. I'll figure it out.

Edit...no luck. I reinstalled and I just get a general protection fault when I try to launch the game.

I'm one of those who's been lucky enough - so far - to only be irritated by GFWL, versus having a game flat out not work through it. That said, I avoid it whenever possible. Bulletstorm was the last game I played that required it.
Just wait, folks. Windows 8 (we're looking at a developer version at work) is completely integrated with Windows Live. Like, completely. Like, if you don't have a Windows Live account, they actually send someone to your house and cut off your feet.
I hope it gets sorted, Pokey. Everyone hates GFWL but so far there aren't many solutions I'm aware of.
