Looks like GOG scored Activision's catalogue: to date they've released both Arcanum and Gabriel Knight: Sins of the Father(!) for $5.99US each.

I wouldn't mind playing the first GK again. I've got it on the original 3.5 disks and have never heard the "talkie" version. hmmm…

Ooo, Arcanum. Never played it and always meant to. Any word on how it'll work with Win7 64-bit?

I'm only seeing XP and Vista 64 listed in the specs. Be the guinea pig and try it. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I have Arcanum on disc and I've been meaning to play it 'cause the steampunk calls to me.

*edit: Someone on GoG's forum for Arcanum has it running in Win 7 at 1600x900

Sins of the Fathers is up there on my To Play List along with TLJ and Sanitarium (which I bought from GoG). I love adventure games but haven't really played anything apart from the LucasArts games back in the day and a few Revolution titles, then I stumbled on to the Adventure Gamers website and realised the scene had never really died and there was a ton of stuff I'd missed. I see you, Jen, Orb and Old Rooster are the adventure aficionados here on Tap or are there more of you scoundrels?

Arcanum was by Troika wasn't it? I haven't a clue whether it was any good.

There's more of us adventure-loving scoundrels lurking about in the forums. It's our original pedigree - Four Fat Chicks.

Until I found gaming sites on-line I'd never played any of the original LucasArts or Revolution catalogue as I was strictly Sierra-centric with the occasional foray based on what was talked about in gaming mags like Sanitarium or the Tex Murphy series. Imagine my surprise when learning of all the titles I'd never heard about.

Speaking of Activision:

http://pc.ign.com/articles/107.....305p1.html

Holy SHIT!!!!! I fully expect Steerpike to react to the MAX!!!!

Edit: G4 has a fuller story:

http://g4tv.com/thefeed/blog/p.....-Out-.html

A choice quote by Tim Schaffer:

"Getting mad at Activision for this kind of thing is like getting mad at an ape for throwing feces," said Schafer. "It's just how the beast communicates."

Heh heh. I was just about to sit down and tap something out about that story, Meho.

It's funny, because a while back I commented that Blizzard and Infinity Ward probably weren't treated as badly as other Activision studios. Guess I was mistaken.

Of course, Activision's SEC filing suggests that some illegality was going on… until we find out what those guys are accused of, it's too early to say who's to blame. Though sending gorillas to lurk around the office was probably overkill in either case. It's not like some IW employee is gonna sneak off with nuclear launch codes.

Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.

If you didn't grab Sanitarium during the last Steam (I think) sale, GOG is offering up Sanitarium and Longest Journey for a mere $4.99US/ea this weekend.

[puts on Yap-shaped clothes] Elemental's a fine game for what it is. Icewind Dalesque dungeon crawler. Hoping they get rights to Wizardy 8, a great game no one played.

Funny not HaHa you should ask, Toger.

I saw the notice the game was released on GoG & my thought was, "Yay, now there will be a big bunch of struggling players just like me & maybe I can pick up some pointers."

I own it (bought for ~$10, my comfort price point), have installed once & quit two seconds past the intro. Too much learning curve at that moment while in the middle of playing many other games.

Followed posts on GoneGold as Day 1 players installed....and finished that night. It's short, difficult, used to be buggy & still unforgivingly D&D based meaning what you see in graphics isn't necessarily what is really happening (w/ virtual dice). Complaints at the time included not being able to hit the broad side of a barn...what????....due to ignorance of D&D rules. Includes that complicated armor, stats mess that drives me bonkers.

On the other hand, it's a crpg.

Never intended to play the game as vanilla, plan to install the latest Co8 (Circle of Eight) mods & any others deemed worthy. Trainers if I must in order to survive. I'm willing to give it a go with you whenever you're ready....and I'm finished Nehrim. But remember, I'll be playing a stacked deck. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I've seen the recommendations to play with the Co8 mods, so if I actually pull the trigger, I wouldn't be flying vanilla either. We'd be in the same boat with those nasty D&D rules (don't need no stinking rulez). I'll let you know when/if I buy and when I'm ready to play. At the moment, I'm deep in the throes of Harvest Moon: Animal Parade (don't judge [Image Can Not Be Found]) and Enslaved so I'm not yet ready for anything else... particularly if it requires actual brain cells and sitting upright during this wretched heat wave.

Heat wave?  I love me a good heat wave.  Send it to me.  I will give it a good home.  Beats turning the furnace on for the first time this fall.

Toger, I wish you could send me a spare Harvest Moon gene. I have so wanted to love those games. [Image Can Not Be Found]

On one hand, I adored & was thoroughly addicted to Animal Crossing: Wide World on DS. Loved, looooooved that game.

Cannot play more than 10 min of any Harvest Moon & I have owned most of them, back to PS1 versions (which I re-sold for hefty profits). Not any Rune Factory games. Even Little King's Story, a delightful premise that I can't make myself play. I keep trying though.

I need a transplant. An infusion. Something to allow me to get into a game like this long enough to begin finding fun which (I hope) will positively re-enforce my continuing. Any suggestions? Or is it a basic hard-wired disability. For life. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Oh, Spike, you've no idea how much I'd just love to send this heat your way. I'm so over it. Every day is an endless litany of "I don't have clothes for this kind of weather," "When is the fog returning?" and "How much is the indecent exposure fine?". And don't get me started on the lack of personal hygiene I'm having to endure riding public transit. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Yap, Little King's Story is so adorable! It's like Pikmin with people. I have no idea why I have a tolerance for these types of games. It might actually be genetic as my sister and one of my nephews loves the Harvest Moon series, too. Oh the other hand, I don't have a tolerance for tinkering with mods, but you do. So, I think it all evens out.

Lifted from GamingTrend:

It's hard if you're not familiar with the D&D 3.5 rules, and easy if
you know them in and out. The last time I played the game it was in
Ironman mode. I got the party to level 10 before losing interest, and
never lost a single party member. Knowing how to build a properly
balanced party is vital, as is knowing how to use each class. You don't
have to min/max, but you do have to play effectively, just like in a
real pen & paper campaign.

Or...

A mostly melee party will do well early on.  The first time I played
ToEE (shortly after release) I built a balanced party with what I
thought was a good mix of classic role archtypes.  I spent most of the
first 1/3 of the game resurrecting my wizard and rogue.  ToEE is brutal
on mages early on.  It's compounded by the fact that low level mages are
pretty worthless with only a few spells per day.  Add in the very tight
restriction on resting (unlike later D&D games where you can rest
pretty much anywhere), and you can end up carrying around dead mages and
rogues for large chunks of the very early game.  About half way through
that 1st play through my wizard starting getting a lot better,
especially with a full selection of defensive spells.

Hell's bells. This is causing me to seriously reconsider ToEE.

To quote myself: "It's.....difficult."

I wasn't kidding, reports reported the game is brutal. Especially for players who don't take their D&D polices & procedures seriously. Such as we. Two.  Reason why I was happy the misery would be spread further (via gog) than hardcore who expected as much. Such as you. Who could play with me. Who already knew but bought the game anyway. Baldur's Gate II is up. I know it's a classic and I think I have a big box version somewhere, but is it as difficult as ToEE?
