Even the vanilla version of Stalker had wonderful sunsets and skies, and yes, I took pictures too. I'm agreement though, it'd be nice to hide the GUI. I always loved the campfires surrounded by stalkers as the sun went down. There was nothing quite as warming as hearing laughter, merry making and music after a particularly long and arduous stint through the wilderness. Could you get that feeling in a film or a book? I'm not convinced you could and that's why I love disco pork.
I'd like to resurrect this thread with a question. This is my first post here - I've been a lurker for quite some time and have always been impressed with the general friendliness and civility of everyone. it's a nice change from, well, pretty much everything else.
Has anyone tried Stalker Complete 2012 (nee 2009 I believe)? I saw someone commenting positively about the 2009 version in another thread. I've dabbled in the game (I haven't reached the Garbage yet) and am interested in playing "vanilla" but with perhaps the basic enhancements/fixes that this mod advertises.
My PC is quite long in the tooth (AMD 64 X2 3800+, Radeon X1900 XT) but handles plain old Stalker just fine. I don't plan on upgrading anytime soon as I'm a bit of a convert to consoles. Sort of a recovering computer game snob. Still, this game appeals to me and I'd like to see it through.

I just had to reply to say that Synonamess Botch is such a great name. It made my day. Unfortunately, Synon, I can't respond to your inquiry since I haven't played the game to which you refer. I hope someone else will have an answer for you. But do come back and spend some time with us. With a name like that, you certainly have the wit and intelligence to fit in well here. kay

Hi Kay and thanks for the kind words. It would have been easier to call my intelligence into question since I seem unable to figure out how to add a proper avatar...
It's nice to run into another Twice Upon a Time fan since there don't seem to be many of us, given the lack of a proper DVD release.
Anyway, Stalker. I'll probably just try the mod out anyway. This site seems infused with so much love for the game I figured it couldn't hurt to ask.

Synon, If you had been here for long, you would understand how funny what you just said is.
I did not have an avatar forever. And when I finally couldn't stand it any more, it took the help of many board members including our fearless leader, Steerpike, to help me find my old avatar (from FFC as in the Memorial Bordello Lounge) and figure out how to get it up there.
Believe me, Synon, most ofl my time here has been as an empty head. No one will think less of you for that.
Keep coming back. Kay

Welcome to TAP, S.B. (what a great name).
Until 2009 I was an adventure-only gamer. Then discussions here about Fallout 3 made me decide to play my 1st RPG. It would be understatement to say that I loved F3. After 6 months of having fun in the Wasteland (base game + all DLC) I decided to try modding for the 1st time. Had loads of fun there, too.
I have Stalker: Shadow - bought it last year and haven't even removed the cellophane. I had thought that I'd scoop up Clear Sky and Pripyat in a Steam sale, but I keep forgetting to look.
I like the look of the Stalker Complete mod. Once I get a few 1/2-played games off my hard drive I would be willing to play along with anyone wanting to start Stalker for the 1st or 73rd time. [Image Can Not Be Found] Modded. With Clear Sky and Pripyat.
Keep coming back, SB. Sometimes it seems mighty quite here - as if we're all on vacation (and sometimes we are) - but other times the joint is jumpin'.

SB…go to gravatar.com Register, then upload the image you want to Gravatar. The process is simple. Then your chosen avatar will show up her automatically – that is if this current board software plays well with Gravatar. If not, maybe one of the TAP overlords (no idea what they lord it over, but I digress) could get your image working if you emailed it to them.

Thanks for the avatar help everyone. I got it to work, although I'm not exactly sure how...
Spike,
I guess I'm an old RPGer from way back (Phantasie, Wasteland, Pool of Radiance, Ultima Underworld, System Shock, Fallout 1&2, just to name some favs). I'm in the middle of my first Fallout 3 campaign. It's the first RPG I can remember that compelled me to just...wander and see what was out there. However I put it down recently and haven't felt compelled to come back to it yet. I know I will though.
But I've never much been into modding. Call me a purist, I don't know.
The thing that typically moves me in games is atmosphere, and Stalker's got it. It seems a good candidate for modding being that its a great game already, just unpolished (is that being too kind?) in some ways. I'll try to document my experiences with the complete mod and we can share notes as you suggest. I'm a bit irregular in my gaming time so be warned.
I don't own the other games in the series. When I finish Stalker I'll think about trying them out.

Hi SB, welcome to the site! Or, rather, welcome to talking on the site!
I always look forward to hearing people's reactions to STALKER. For me the game can't be beat, and I understand the Complete mod really helps polish the rough edges. Do report back!

Hey Botch. Welcome. I'm interested in your impressions of this mod too. There is something about Stalker that I've never quite seen in any other game. I've never been able to finish it though (first game, halfway point) but I intend to sooner or later. Maybe this mod will be what finally pushes me over the top.
Welcome, Botch. I can't decide whether your name puts me more in mind of a Star Wars character or a talented 17th century Dutch artist.
I wish you luck in the Zone and look forward to your reports - I modded the hell out of that little bastard a long time ago, with the aid of a close friend - I think we may have achieved the ultimate combination, though it took weeks of assembly and testing to get it to that stage. I wish I still had the files. When you're done, I can certainly recommend both 'sequels' - Clearsky is a more linear game but has atmosphere in big lumpy splodges, and Call of Pripyat is like a big, modded sandbox of improvements over the first two games. Both can be heavily benefited through further, frantic modding however - just wait til you get the blowout/atmospheric/weather mods for Call of Pripyat. With the dynamic zombie-creation =D
Thanks for the warm welcomes, all.
I installed the Complete 2009 mod and took it for a test drive. Unfortunately, my news isn't all good. I like the new interface. The changes are subtle and logical as near as I can tell. I made the mistake of not loading up an un-modded save first to get a baseline for comparison, so I'm probably oblivious to some of the differences. The graphics look nice, but not hugely different to my untrained eye. Not yet anyway.
I experienced many graphical glitches. I was having similar problems before but now it's even worse. I suspect it may be my setup that is the real problem though. I was never able to get rid of some artifacts with my Radeon X1900 XT even with updated drivers. Lines coming out of characters heads and what-not, like whacked out shadows. I've had those problems in other games as well.
Also, it crashed several times, but that may be related to my video woes.
I went against the recommendation of starting a new game, but didn't notice any problems there. I was even able to re-aquire at least one quest that had expired on me before. I suspect this is a feature, unless it's something about the original I wasn't aware of.
That's all for now.

I know this is an awful crime of stating the obvious, but your graphics card isn't simply overheating, is it? Stretching textures shooting out of people's heads and shadows bending time and space is the point at which I know any given graphics card has burnt out a component and will bite the dust within three days.
I had some strange things happening in Call of Pripyat. At times it appeared that semi-transparent leaves were blowing across the screen. At first, I thought it was supposed to be real, but later it didn't make sense. It didn't happen that often and I don't recall seeing anything like that in the original Stallker.
Artifacting such as that is often the result of overheating, SB, so you might want to peek into your system and make sure all fans are working correctly and nothing's choked on a dust bunny. Latest drivers, too, are important. The Complete mod will push your card harder than the original STALKER would, so heat is a consideration. It doesn't necessarily mean your card is about to die, just that it's having trouble expelling heat.
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
