I've spent about 4-5 hours with this so far, that doesn't include the couple of reloads I've suffered due to either flat out dying (I really need to stop blundering into combat) or the game did something weird (one battle would never end as everyone but one companion and a tag-a-long had died… and yet, neither of them were doing any damage and the damned Shadow Priest rezzed himself. The companion just stopped fighting completely! [Image Can Not Be Found])

My girl, half-elf Ranger named Karma Sabich, has left home after the Harvest Festival. As with NWN the first, my girl is a dual-wielder. Currently with a long sword and something with a "k" (not a katana as that requires two hands) She's battled her way through a swamp, graveyard, should-have-been-a-drunken-brawl at an Inn, made deals with Lizardfolk, rescued all manner of idiotic children and possibly saved a marriage. In the process, she's befriended a crazed wanna-be Dwarven monk, tiefling thief (aren't they all?) and a druid.

I'm still battling the camera and interface; the graphics are butt-ugly and I hate the long load times.

Oh well, we've finally arrived in Neverwinter. Here's hoping the city is just as fun and entertaining as the backwaters of Faerun.

I'm starting over. [Image Can Not Be Found]  No, no, not to respec (although I might, for that, soon enough).

If I must play a buttugly fighter without WIS or CHA, I thought of the perfect name (heretofore randomly generated): Liv Foreva.

Although now that I think about it, I kinda like: Random Generated.

I am also using gamepressure.com's guide which in order to read required the last 30 min. to install Adobe Reader on this slow-as-hell but so great to have on trips to nowhere (N. Vietnam-China border) netbook*. Thirty finger-tapping moments in which to think up the perfect name.

*I love run on sentences when there is no requirement to be concise.

Yeah, I didn't think of the perfect name until after I'd started playing, but henceforth she will be known as Karma Sabich. I'm incredibly tempted to start over so that she'll say that name when introduced but, I've already invested enough time and fallen too many times to damned Shadow Priests that I'd cry if I started over.

I'll have to give the guide at gamepressure.com a look-see. I glanced at gamefaq's guides but didn't see anything note-worthy.

Liv lives. Boyhowdy (said in texas-talking accent of first npc at the bridge), camera & controls suck disenchanted pigballs. I figured casting would be a major pain (being D&D), don't see how I'd stay alive as a cloth-wearing neophyte caster, what with the fumbling. Reason why I'm a brute wearing heavy armor. Usually I hate radial menus. Especially radials that expand to radials
within radials (within radials....). In NW2's case, I'd take radials over what it takes to cast a spell.

I am loathe to add mods as the process (hack packs?) is a total mystery, but the default UI may force me to learn.

Toger, you are 4-5 playing hrs ahead of me? At the rate I'm going that translates to about 12 of my playing hours. [Image Can Not Be Found]

NWN is one of those series I always wanted to get into, but never got around to it.  I loved table-top D&D (and miss it greatly esp Dragonlance and Ravenloft), so maybe you guys can help illuminate the mysteries of NWN as you play through it!

The only reason I'm so far ahead of you is because I'm off this week (gotta burn some furlough days) and can spend several hours during the night playing. I'll slow down once I'm back at work next week.

I was waiting for someone to make the connection with the name. Once you say it out loud, it makes perfect sense. And Spike, I've paid in countless ways. [Image Can Not Be Found]

As a Ranger, I have access to some spells, but it's so tedious to use them, not to mention just getting to them, that I've opted to melee my way through and try to always have a caster with me and let them do their own thing. Elaneeeeee, the Druid, casts a mean Entanglement. She also casts some other stuff that I've yet to figure out. Unfortunately, she's almost useless when she shape-shifts into some other form but I don't want to mess with her behaviour too much so I just let her do whatever the hell she wants. Needless, the tiefling, is pretty good at disarming traps and we've only come up against one chest that she couldn't open. I've yet to figure out how to bash them open. The manual says there's a way, but I must have misunderstood because I can't even get the menu for it. [Image Can Not Be Found] Ironfist the Monk wanna-be will sometimes just stand there while the battle rages. I'm not sure what all he wants/needs to be inspired to join the fray.

But we're in the City now, so we'll sally forth!

I'm on my way to the inn. Through the swamp. Solo.

Rt. click on a locked door or chest & if it's doable, you'll get a choice to bash.

I'm having trouble activating combat – it's like my mouse is asleep. Although I am mindful of the stupid (hi, Jarrod [Image Can Not Be Found]) D&D dice-roll turn-taking that is happening behind the scenes. Also having trouble with conversations: run over, double click, and stand like a stupid head not talking.

Don't get me started on those teeny tiny bags of corpse loot. [Image Can Not Be Found] I'd forgotten about those – in fact, I played NW for hours before I even noticed them. [Image Can Not Be Found][Image Can Not Be Found]  This time around, when the first village was attacked? Most everyone was killed as I went around clicking on tiny baglings. I gots my priorities, youse gots yours. [Image Can Not Be Found][Image Can Not Be Found][Image Can Not Be Found]

What is great: wearing armor. And I was using a 2h greatsword (doing next to no damage) till I learned the merchant would give me 300+g for the club+1. Hell, that must be way better than the crummy sword I'm using & damn, whataya know, it is.

Do battle buddies have independent AIs? Like healers & casters do their own things without my micro-management? it's all I can do to get my own mouse clicking, club hitting to function. Thank jesus I don't cast although if I could comprehend prestige classes (I have NWN2 Gold, includes Mask of the Betrayer), I'd love to be an Eldritch Knight (wizard/fighter).

You are playing on easy, right?

I forgot, one more thing. This is the first ever game I have used recommended specs/etc at level up. Click, click, click–> Done! I usually spend forever deliberating. Now it's accomplished in 3 seconds. I'm pretending I'm really playing a game that makes me play as a warrior and gives me no choices at level ups.

I'm sure I've right-clicked and not gotten the option to bash; however, I shall try again… tomorrow.

Be sure that whatever you're wielding you have points in that particular skill otherwise, you will do no damage. I originally carried two long swords and found I did much better with one long sword and a kukuri (I think) in my off hand. That's when I actually started to do some decent damage.

Conversations: you should get the talk bubble when your mouse hovers over them, left click once should bring up the dialogue box… unless they're unimportant at which point they're utter something inconsequential and continue on their way.

Yes, battle buddies have independent AI (some of it may be stupid, but they have it). Open the character sheet (C) and click the Behaviour tab. There's a whole boat load of stuff that you can turn off and on. I've left most of it as is. Also, when you have companions make sure they're actually equipped with a weapon. I did most of the tutorial with one of them beating people up with their bare hands because I assumed they were already equipped. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I found Uncle Duncan. He's Irish. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Deekin! Remember Deekin the little bard kobold? He's a merchant in Neverwinter and the conversation with him is hilarious. I'm glad it's funny 'cause I'll have to repeat it next time as the game locked up while leaving the Temple of Tyr. Freakin' bug-riddled piece of crap. It's a good thing it's decent to play. Of course, I hadn't saved since entering the Merchant Quarter so I'll have to repeat all that I've done.

Save early, save often.

Ironfist is a little on the slow side. Understanding the trials for him to become a monk just went right over his statue-challenged head. It was highly amusing.

Learned three things while unsystematically skimming the (190 pg) manual:

1. What you said about behavior tab of party members.

2. Action queue top middle screen (!). All mine had is a single sword icon - hit once & poof, nothing more. Even when I seem to be left clicking enemies. Successful heals also seem irregular meaning I cannot pull one off every time although I do have heal kits.

*3. Resting lasts 24 hrs (!!!). Meaning, anything that can be done only once/day can be done again after rest. Like I have a cup? I think? Heals 1-2 times daily or something? Never used but now I'm going to try.

Thanks for advice about weapon skills. It had briefly occurred to me but I went on anyway. Coupled with insta-recommend clicking is total ignorance of my skills, abilities, & feats. I never look at the list, simply click on through. Don't even know my level!  Will say, this has allowed me to advance with less pain, further than usual, without drowning in deliberation. My inner mind says I'm playin' like Jen. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I've been 50/50 with recommended skills/feats: I manually assign points for Karma; everyone else gets the recommended 'cause there's just too many to choose.

The Harvest Cup is for healing? Who knew?! I guess I should actually look at what I'm carrying around.

I miss the radial menus.

I read somewhere that because of our spatial awareness and wonderful adapted brain-ness, we're more likely to remember the position of things in a radial menu system (even a nested radial system) than a typical drop down menu system?

If only it were a drop-down menu! It's simply a lot of clicking to bring up dialogue boxes with either check boxes or radio buttons. It's kludgey at best. At worst, it's downright stupid. What the hell was Obsidian thinking? Oh wait, they're the devs that routinely take a franchise and f*ck it up. I forgot. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I can talk to my companions! As long as we're in Duncan's tavern, the Splendiferous Flagon. Once there, you can ask all manner of questions.

Apparently, Needless the tiefling isn't loved by her former partner thief, so we've have a number of encounters in Neverwinter. I find it hilarious that as we're all standing around after killing bandits and people just wander by completely ignoring us.

We're currently locked in the Tomb of the Betrayers looking for a lost priest. Have found an interesting puzzle: locked chest on the other side of the room. In order to get to the other side, have to run a gauntlet of two fireball hurling statues. There's a lever that moves a stone plinth to block the fireballs. Now I just have to figure out how to peel off the thief to walk with the moving plinth while the others stay with me and work the lever.

Note to self: shadows are damned tough to kill

@ Jarrod. Right arm, man. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Cannot believe how much fun I'm having, way above expectations. I think all due to playing fighter & ignoring custom builds. Slam, bang, enemies are dust! 'Course it's folly to display hubris on Easy at lvl 3 or 4 (? can't even find my bloody level!).

Toger, did you equip Shorty D's 2h axe? After you reported his ineptitude & I saw his health fall so dramatically in those puny inn fights, I decided to check his inventory. With his axe & my longsword+1, we rock! Time enough later for him to go all pure & holy* with bare hands as weapon of choice.

It hurt my frugality to bash locked chests thus breaking whatever was inside. And now....finally... a rogue! Is it a D&D rule that all rogues must be annoying prats? Toger, do you remember Tomi in NWN? As I recall, he stayed in my party until almost the end despite his constant yammering. Never personally played a rogue or thief or anyone with similar skills, so always ecstatic when one joins my party.

Sure I remember Deekin, can't wait to see him again.

*for the benefit of any reading, he aims to be a monk

I didn't equip Shorty D's axe until just before we got to Highcliff, that's when I discovered none of your companions will self-equip when they join… which is beyond stupid.

I loved Tomi! Except for the fact that he'd run off and engage critters far above his station in life and end up as smear on the floor. I like Needless, especially her interatctions with Shorty D and the you've-not-yet-met tree-hugging Druid, Elaneeeeeeeee.

Figured out how to peel off one party member: Right-click and hold brings up yet another sub-menu (it's like a f*cking cliched Chinese restaurant menu there's so many sub-menus) where you can broadcast commands, including things like "stand your ground."

I've switched some of the spells that the Druid has access to and with her default behaviours she'll cast them as needed, including heal. Now I just gotta tweak her behaviour to keep her from transmogrifying into animals as once she does that she's pretty much useless as a combatant.

Found the wandering priest holed up in the back of the tombs. Guess who's controlling all the undead? Our former friend and famed traitor of Neverwinter: Fenthick (I'm sure we had a better name for him, but I can't remember what it was. Alas, that entire thread is lost to the ether) I kept getting my ass handed to me by those accursed shadows. I've not yet gone up against Fenthick as I need to clean out the rest of the tomb area. I hates ghouls and shadows.

Despite fighting the non-intuitive interface (and the fact that I hate having to read this ginormous manual in detail to figure some things out) this is a fun game!

Hmmmm.

Maybe if I wait for you guys to thrash out the interface a little more I might actually look into this game.  I'm stuck for what to play right now.

I was thinking about KOTOR 2 but then remembered Obsidian made it.... (jk xtal...jk...)
