That btb2 site is great. Terrific writeups.

gul'darnit, I can't play Morrowind with tons of mods with you. I have New Vegas to finish, a stack of PS3 and 360 games, plus Armand keeps pressuring me to play Minecraft.

Don't do it, Steerpike, don't join us. Truly, doing so will take years off your life. I know for certain it's shortenend mine. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Three (or four, my brain is decaying) complete, fresh installs + last night I wrote over the entire mess with my backup .rar of Brorrowind only. Then I again installed mods of my choosing (mostly of the cheat variety, like magicka regen & longer day/nights & exterminate cliff racers). I'm adding them with Wrye Mash but can't start the game with Wrye icon lower left corner of menu. Get error message I don't understand.

I am totally confused as to how load order is certain or even achieved when I'm not launching via Wrye.

I may go back to Dragon Age.

Last night at 11:30 pm so desperate I activated Two Worlds II but hate with a passion the main character we must play – what a mamby-pamby creep! [Image Can Not Be Found]

Need to play something….anything!…as I continue to tinker. Preferably with no learning curve. Install 'n' Play. (no, I'm not desperate enough to activate WoW although husband has suggested it as a solution).

i have loved reading your discussions here about playing a thoroughly modded Morrowind.   You guys are funny.   And you have convinced me that I have no interest in doing mods.   If I were to do them,  I should have worked with Spike on Fallout 3.    Even that was too much effort.   I guess I will forever be a person who plays the straight vanilla game, right out of the box.   No mods.    And I also suspect that if I went back to Morrowind I would now find it lacking.   It sits in my memory as one of the highlights of my gaming career and I want to keep that memory as I search for more hightlights.

I'm having lots of light emitting chickens (see above). Tulips can't hold a candle to a light emitting chicken.

Speaking of light emitting.

Since night descended on one of my troubleshooting sessions a week or so ago I've noticed that candles, lanterns and torches emit bugger all light. I'm pretty pissy about poor lighting and by extension poorly implemented stealth. I attribute this to being spoilt rotten by Thief I and II. Anyway, I thought I was on to a winner when I found The Lighting Mod (TLM), a plugin which tweaks every light in the game, reduces ambient light, integrates light based sneaking and penalities during certain weather and times of day, and also gives ownership to every street lantern and torch so you can't just run around pinching them. The problem was that after installing the mod the Census and Excise Office in Seyda Neen (and any other interior for that matter) looked like some sort of flashing boogie wonderland. The only thing missing was some funkin' beats, a disco ball and Socucius Ergalla shaking it down with Sellus Gravius. "Ah YES!"

I mean, seriously, had the person responsible for this mod ever sat by candle light? I'm not sure whether it was the lower ambient light indoors that was exasperating the already dubious vanilla flicker or it was simply their tweaks that had caused it, but the mod was immediately uninstalled despite the rest of it looking really good. TLM comes in complete and modular flavours and even with parts of the modular version installed the problem was still there unfortunately 🙁

Might Armand be Satan in disguise? Passing as a trustworthy gamer sent to lure the unwary? What could be more innocent than, "Let's jump on the wayback bus & play Morrowind with mods"?

Kay, I've been reading, and enjoying, this thread too..  Sometimes it's good for a chuckle, but mostly I think I'd be pulling my hair out if I had to work as hard as Yap et. al. has been to get a modded Morrowind.  Modding F3 was like playing patty-cake compared to what these guys are doing.

But should you ever change your mind....

"…you just keep on trying 'til you run out of cake."

Might Armand be Satan in disguise?

I've always felt that the devil was more interested in quality of souls than he was in quantity, and we do have the best-quality souls here at Tap. Me, I have long been of the opinion that Armand is the devil. He seems so nice, you know, when playing Left 4 Dead or recommending you try Minecraft. He's like Max von Sydow in Needful Things.

This thread is going to become truly epic once you guys all get it going. Then it'll be like, setup, play, discussion, souls carried off by Satan.

Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.

Damn! You guys have figured me out! And I would've gotten away with it if it wasn't for those meddlesome kids!

I'm just keeping busy with Minecraft and Recettear right now while I
wait for you two. Just let me know when you guys are starting up. And
not too late or else I'll wanna start modding it all over again!

Also, gregg, that pic you posted is amazing. Where is it from?

It's the new Morrowind Graphics Extender. It's still in development but they've manged to suss out how to do real shadows. Yeah I know, that's exaclty what I thought. It makes me want to hold back but there's nothing saying that it'll ever be finished. To me, that's the only major thing missing from Morrowind -- real shadows. Everything looks quite flat without them but hey, I've not taken on Morrowind because I wanted pretty graphics!

I'm reading this book called Air Guitar which is a bunch of little chapters on capital "A" Art and commerce in the US. The author goes on and on about the hotrodders of the 50s and 60s and how they took a car and carved it up and remade it to their liking. He really, really goes on and on but he called this a form of "embodied dissent", against, I guess, the dominate paradigm, or in our case, Bethesdsa. And the car manufacturers were right on their tail, incorporating the best mods into standardized design, which were again cut up and etc., etc.

Which reminded me of this thread.

So shine on you crazy modders. A day will come when every game will have glowing chickens. At which point you will have to mod them out, of course.

EDIT: That new graphic extender does look sweet.

I knew it! Anyone who is consistently nice must be suspect.

Armand, my game looks like that! I wondered how in hell Gregg B took a skyview shot at lvl 1 till I stumbled upon where he grabbed it. Scroll down to the post on MGE XE - my Seyda Neen & Balmora look identical.

Some problems w/ constant fog, took the strider to Balmora & walked back to Pelagiad while tinkering. Fog removed yet retaining my view distance dropped framerates to jerk...step...jerk. Understandably since my view distance allows vistas that never existed in vanilla MW & only created now thanks to MGE. Saw such astounding sights on my walk...going to be difficult to decide a compromise between jaw-drop beauty & being crippled. (via framerates [Image Can Not Be Found])

To be honest, aside from the obvious performance hit on my rig, I wouldn't want a fogless Morrowind; I like the atmosphere and mystery it creates but I will say that the vistas look stunning.

I'd dearly love to have real time shadows on the environments though. Bwah! Might have to check out the 'unstable' build... is it very unstable Yap?

Spent the other evening deliberating over the environment textures. I've been using the Visual Pack with some of Connary's textures for the last couple of weeks and I've noticed a few of them don't play nicely with each other -- very jarring in some cases. So I thought I'd stick to the standard Visual Pack which is, by and large, terrific. The only problem is that after looking at this texture pack comparison page I've got a few reservations about some of the changes it makes to the vanilla palette (see here and here) -- I'm not convinced they're enough to make me want to go back to vanilla though, we'll see. I also noticed that the Anisotropic Filtering in MGE hasn't been working so I've had to set up a game profile which forces it through my video card. Tch! (Forget what I said about Mipmap LOD Bias Armand -- AF is a better solution if it works :-P!)

I also tried out that Atmospheric Sound Effects mod and removed it almost instantly after being hit sideways by just how goddamn loud everything was. There was nothing wrong with the sound effects themselves but Seyda Neen sounded like a bustling town square in the dead of night which, quite frankly, is just ridiculous. Less is definitely more.

After all this time spend f*cking about (sorry, the sensitive among us may read that as "fiddling"), are we then supposed to play this game?

Gregg B, I left MW at Pelagiad without fog but with infinite sight and crippling framerates. Haven't returned since restarting DA:O. Such a nice break to play a game without error messages. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I will add some fog, eventually. What I'd missed in Brorrowind's readme & realized reading Knot's threads, was: in MGE, in order to use sunshaft shader 3.0 (or knx SSAO? something like that), exponential fog must be checked. Mine wasn't. By then I'd disabled fog-type-fog. Plan is to enable fog, see what happens. What concerns me is it may be time to re-genenerate draw distances after continued fiddling. All reasons to put off returning to MW's Morass of Muddling. (MMMM)

I like Atmospheric Sounds Effects, if only for bug noises. Agreed, crowd sounds at 2 am in Seyda Neen square is a bit overmuch but I have many wandering npcs at that hour. The element of surprise is what I love about mods - for example this lone orc. As many times as I've reloaded Seyda Neen at all hours, surely I would have noticed him. Last reload middle of the night, he suddenly appeared most appropriately holding a lit torch!

I would just like to apologize for wasting you guys' time. I realize this has taken up WAY too much of it, and I will never suggest such a thing again.

On a totally different note, have you guys seen Planescape:Torment modded for a modern PC! It looks great!   [Image Can Not Be Found]

See, Gregg B? What did I say? (points to post above). Armand is Satan! Nice to the Core!

Armand, Armand, in my world to bitch is to breathe. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Besides, do not think for a moment that I would be (going down this hellacious path of) modding MW unless I wanted to. I love doing this. Honestly & truly. Mucking about with mods is so much more fun to me than replaying a game, any game. The challenge is the game for me.

Oh, and before I forget, how do you think I played Planescape:Torment? Modded, of course! Was I playing at the same time as Scout? Or was that Baldur's Gate (#1, I played the Tutu version). What I remember is what he saw & experienced & reported was not the same as my game. Takes getting used to, simultaneously playing the same game, but not really.

Oh.. God..

Oh God.

This is reminding me terribly of me. I attempted to play Stalker: Call of Pripyat some months ago - four days of 5-10 hour a day modding text files to alter the behaviours of every food item, drug, monster and weather effect in the game and testing them with very slow load times, and I simply stopped trying.

I blame the invulnerable bloodsuckers. It was all their fault.

I'm not sure I wholly understand, though. My Morrowind modding extends as far as the swamp sounds mod, better bodies, and.. Well, I think that was everything noteworthy. What is this madness of mad?! Don't you experience a terrible immersion-break every time you see a modded feature in the game and think "hahar, I did that."?

It's as bad as DLC for atmosphere. It was at that point when the DLC salesman in the party camp started asking me for real money that I decided I really -hated- Dragon Age.

I loves me a bit of vital modding, but when it's assembling packs of new features I find it more of a headache and a fun-killer, in most circumstances. Exceptions include 'making a game what it should have been', such as reenabling sleep and dreams in STALKER, or making Hardcore more Hardcore in New Vegas.

Nonetheless.. I will admit, I will be watching with curiosity - this might be the thing to inspire me to return to my ancient and well-protected Morrowind savegames - some of my best gaming experiences have been side-by-side with my ladyfriend the Pixie, laptop beside desktop, both playing independent Morrowind campaigns in rough synchronisation and discussing our adventures as we explore Vvardenfel.

Now, confessions; am I the only one here who draws his own paper maps for open-world RPGs and keeps notebooks packed with journal entries, plans and reminders? That's REAL modding 😉
