This game reminds me of Morrowind. How exciting it is and yet how easy it is to break it. xtal, you must be playing on the hardest setting. I'm playing on normal and I just walked up the road at Black Mountain and shot anything that got in the way. Black Mountain was a let down for me.

Later -

xtal, yes I'm using Wacky Wasteland. I picked it right at the beginning of the game so I don't have any way to compare to Fallout NV without it. Not sure what it adds but I couldn't resist. I do get this odd graphic of the pipboy with a ... over his head and a shocked look on his face. Once was when Rex the Super Dog was doing a Lassie and wanted to take me to a boy who fell in the well but when I asked him to he just stood there. Not that much of an experience that I know of.

I agree with the different sidekick stories. I sort of cycle through the companions. Cass is my current fave but I want to try out the nerdy science guy at the Fort too.

Been hunting Deathclaws in the quarry near Sloan with Boone tonight. I got the Gobi Campaign Scout Sniper Rifle which is pretty handy for picking them off from a ways away. Need to come back tomorrow and finish them off and open up the quarry.

I have taken the game up to the end game and then, like Fallout 3, walked away. I'll wander for a long time now, checking out all the different places before triggering the end.

I'm learning to love stealthboys, I'll tell ya.

Besides ED-E's advanced sensors perk I like Cass' the best: whiskey rose, which strips away the negative effects of alcohol, adds positive ones, and prevents you from becoming addicted. A steady stream of booze, particularly whiskey, when travelling with Cass can really enhance your power; though I do kind of miss the struggle of simultaneous alcohol addiction, chem addiction and radiation poisoning; it really made things challenging as hell.

About Black Mountain, I don't know where my difficulty slider is ... I probably didn't change it? You might just have a way better build than I do when it comes to fighting. But I went through a plasma rifle, a minigun, and half an incinerator to get to the summit. One of the many variances of Fallout then, perhaps? What's effortless for one is arduous for another!

Have you visited the asshole known as Jean-Baptiste at the Silver Rush? Let's just say it's not Cass' favourite place to shop. From a twisted perspective, however, I could see the Van Graffs as powerful allies...if it were one's inclination (and such as possible-- which I do not know).

I tried to take Jean Baptisite out with Cass in one of my games. That is one of the toughest fights in the game. I couldn't do it. A room full of armored guys with plasma weapons, no cover, and battles that lasted less than 30 seconds.

I did a couple of screw over the Van Graffs quests and haven't really been back since since the quest to take Cass there is now irrelevant though it still shows as a quest. I've considered just starting at the front of the building and shooting my way in but I also am thinking the Van Graffs, assholes that they may be, are also the only energy merchants around right now. Since I've sort of shouldered the burden of taking care of New Vegas I'm in a wait see mode with them. And, yeah, it doesn't look like good odds, getting into it with Jean-Baptiste whilst his minions stand around, itchy fingers on triggers.

I finished off the Deathclaws at Quarry Junction last night by long range sniping. I finally got tired of fighting the invisible walls on the ridgetops and modded them out so I could find a decent sniper perch. I hate it when you climb nearly to the top of a ridge and the game stops you from taking the last two steps to the top cause it wants to make you solve the quest the way it wants you to. Lazy, lazy, lazy. I have more mods on this game (4) than any other game ever. Invisible walls. Pipboy 2x light intensity and a couple I forgot about.

I'm in Vault 19 now, the one with the convicts and am in the sulfur cave. I had to send ED-E back to base because it kept trying to pick a fight with one of the convicts. ED-E also kept trying to fight with Doc Morgan though I think that might be story related. I think this one is a bug. Though it let me loot a dead body for a key. And none of the other convicts seemed to care that one of their buddies just got gunned down by a beeping sputnik with a ray gun.

I went back to the Great Kahns as all the NPCs where chattering about how they had been wiped out. But they were right where they left them. I THOUGHT I had finished that quest but apparently I got side tracked by something else because Papa Kahn (Shaka's daddy I guess) is still talking about siding with the Legion. So I haven't finished it after all.

Also, xtal, I went back to Black Mountain to make sure I had finished that one and ran into a whole bunch more mutants and Nightkins though the friendly mutant was still there saying my job was done. So I guess they are wandering in from the wasteland and just hanging out on the road to the top. It was a fun fight this time too.

I just finished the Bleed For Me Quest with Red Rose or whatever her name was from the Thorn. Several of the locations she sent me to I had been to earlier but now they were respawned and I had to clean out several caves all over again. So I would suggest to anyone who wants to go exploring,  find The Thorn (hint…edge of New Vegas down in the sewers) and do that quest first.

Most of my companions are getting knocked out early now in the tougher fights. (I'm at level 30.) Since I'm not playing on Hardcore they eventually get up but otherwise they would have all been long gone.

I've pretty much settled on using my Sniper Rifle for everything short of opening cans of beans. It works for long range, of course, but is also deadly for close up work and will take down most anything with a shot or two. I don't remember Sniper Rifles being so deadly in Fallout 3. Maybe my skills are more closely aligned to this particular gun this time. I'm having to use the reload bench to keep myself in .308 ammo and of course one of the four items needed to make them is almost impossible to find in the field. So I'm having to be more aware of ammo, not a bad thing.

You know, I found the Thorn and thought this is probably an interesting place, but I left it almost as quickly as I found it-- and I don't recall why. Thanks for reminding me about it, I think I'll head back there.

Level 25, by the way. Scout, you're obviously a much more efficient time manager than I.   [Image Can Not Be Found]

Am right now waiting for Steam to finish downloading the major patch/upgrade I've been reading about for weeks. Looks like about a 5 minute download.

xtal, I'm unemployed at the moment and spend most afternoons playing New Vegas. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Definitly go back to the Thorn. Most of the place is just meh but that one quest is pretty fun. Plus you get a friend with benefits. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Also: I am so loving this game. It's like a second home right now. I frankly didn't think I was going to get so engaged with it but it sort of grew on me and now I'm delaying the endgame as long as possible, running every little ol' quest I kin fiiind.

"Papa Kahn (Shaka's daddy I guess)" = Too funny!

Unless they fixed the Thorn in the latest update, the arena bit was totally bugged for me. Everything I tried there failed on epic proportions due to mind bending bugginess. I really hope they did fix it cause I always enjoy "arena" sections in games. For those times you just want straight up combat.

As for the sniper rifle, if I remember correctly, it was the best gun in Fallout 2. You could take down entire groups of enemies before they even got a shot off. I'm guessing they were looking to bring that feeling back.

I love it too. Even though I had to restart after a crash. This game is just all kinds of fun.

Same as you, Scout, I'm totally delaying the endgame. I've even cheated a few times and progressed a bit through some of the quest lines and then reloaded an earlier save because I didn't like how that was going.

Early on I didn't care too much to help the NCR, but now I'm fairly certain I want to stick by their side, even if it's not the best thing for New Vegas, and the strip in particular, they seem to be the folk best suited to… gaining any amount of power, let's say. I still sympathize most with the efforts of the Followers, and I'm convinced they have no underhanded intentions of wrong-doing, but they're not the sort of group that are interested by large scale power any way, so it makes sense that their role in the stake of Vegas seems minimal. They'll always just be those guys on the side.

I finally made a trip to Hoover Dam, and while I'm still dawdling around looking for quests here and there, it may be time to throw my hat in, officially, with the New California Republic.

Stay tuned, Mojave!

I got tired of Jean Baptiste bad-mouthing Cass so once I got my Remnants Power Armor and my Sniper Rifle fully repaired I took Cass and Rex in and killed everyone in the place then looted it down to the last fission battery. Took me a few stimpaks and I had to retreat to the top of the stairs to a choke point but actually Rex the robo-dog got the last hit in on Jean baby as we took him down first. What can I say? Some people only understand the pointy end of a .308. I was at level 30 and pretty beefed up but it was the hardest fight so far...except for Vault 34 and the crashed verti-bird site. Luckily I had the right weapon for the crash site.  Vault 34 was a grind though. For sustained difficulty it was the hardest so far.

I've been talking to the man on the street in West and East Vegas and they have little love for the NCR. I know I am against the Legion but I'm not sure I want to hand Vegas over to the NCR, seeing how they seem content to let the place pretty much run down. Of course the late, great Mr. House wasn't exactly open to large-scale gentrification, bless his withered old heart. The NCR don't seem very interested in improving the neighbor that I can see. Since it's all mine now [Image Can Not Be Found] anyway, I might just keep it free and then turn it over. Let the locals paddle their own canoes. We'll see how smart they are when they actually have to govern themselves.

kay, I'm thinking you'll like this game. Get the Explorer perk as soon as you can and just tour all the locations. They are pretty varied though the mines and sewers and vaults get sort of tedious after a while. The exterior landscape is much more interesting than the DC area of Fallout 3.

Have you met Yes Man? He offers a different rout than Legion or NCR or Mr. House. My personal favorite so far.

Armand, I have met Yes Man.

I killed Mr. House and put Yes Man in his place. When he finally gave me a quest to go to Hoover Dam, I figured I better explore elsewhere or I'd trigger the endgame. So he is still up in the Lucky 38 waiting for me to accept that quest.

He's such a fun character. All the other faction leaders come off as humorless dicks, which suites them well. But Yes Man had me grinning like a fool every time I talked to him. I love the voice acting.

I hope none of this is considered spoilers. I wouldn't think so but I never know...

You didn't post a spoiler, Armand.

I never know if I'm posting a spoiler either so I thought I would hide the text just in case.

I figure it doesn't happen here too often, but sometimes you have people freaking out over you mentioning details from the opening video of a game. If everyone could just chill...

Ah Yes Man... I mean, if you asked me to cast the role of a wise-cracking, straight-talking, no-nonsense, truth-telling robot with a smile...I just could not have picked a better guy than Dave Foley.

As much as I want to follow the Yes Man path, I have a feeling that something awful would happen. I really don't want to piss off the NCR because they just control a lot of the Mojave, and to cut off all the perks they give, well it just feels unwise.

I got to a point finally where following one series of quests alienates the others, which was a bit disappointing since I wanted to play each side as long as possible, but I understand the complications that brings up, so I guess I'm fine with the "so and so have many spies" excuses.

I tried killing Mr. House but after reading his obituary (as self-serving as it was) I almost believed some of it and thought is it really worth it to destroy this 200 year old man who possesses so much human knowledge? I couldn't bring myself to do it, so I loaded an early save. The fact that he actually turned out to be a man still in possession of a body, albeit on extreme life support, was a nice touch; I was hoping it wasn't going to be some personality-driven AI left behind by a long-dead twenty-first century business man.

I have not met Yes Man yet, having had to start over. I took advantage of Armand's excellent reportage over at BnB Gaming and installed (nearly) all his recommended add-ons, trying to approach things from a different perspective this time around. Unfortunately Armand ruined his good deed (reporting on great mods) with a crime (mentioning Minecraft) so I'm a little behind. New Vegas is today's game then! I have a lunch meeting and then nothing but whiskey and freedom until... tomorrow.

Finally finished all the quests and visited all the locations I cared to. I took Mr. Yes's Dam quest but didn't get far as I'm looking for a switch or something. My companions, in this case Rex and Veronica, seem to get lost a lot. I had a big battle with 4 tough Legion guys on top of the dam and had to whittle them down on my own. Then later when there is only one lowly grunt everyone shows up ready to rumble. Sheesh.
