I'm getting ready to start this. Hopefully it will run in Vista. I'd be tickled pink if anyone joins me; otherwise, I will blog here, i.e., talk to myself [Image Can Not Be Found] as so often I do [Image Can Not Be Found]

Well, I got it going with some compatibility fiddling. I made my character and killed two giant bugs. Now I've gotta go do something else for a couple of hours.

Well, so far it's not going well. I have that $5 Fallout 1/2 combo pack, which did not come with a manual, not even on the disk, and being a little slow on the uptake sometimes it took me a while to figure out to download one from the 'net.

I just died by giant scorpion. I did kill a few of them before they got me, but I am poisoned and can't do first aid on myself. I have a save right after I found a healing potion, which, unfortunately, does not cure poisoning, just restores a few HP.

Kay, I played Fallout 1 some years ago and really liked it a lot. I remember it was slow going buffing up my character enough to survive, but I also remember being practically invincible by the end. I hope this one goes the same way. Invincibility is a good thing!

Fallout 2 is pretty rough in the beginning, if I recall correctly. Things start to even out a bit once you make it to one of the larger settlements. Good luck!

I got a little sidetracked. I had to go to an all-day event on Friday that was boring, so I brought my DS and started Chrono Trigger. And got instantly addicted. So that's all I did all weekend. Now that it's a new work week, I will be tied to my PC again and will take up Falling Out forthwith.

I took up Fallout 2 again last night. I started over with a new character and put more points into endurance, and then I was able to beat the first dungeon, do the quests in my home village, and head out to Klamath. There I saved the cows from the scorpions and got killed trying to fight a golden gecko.

I am still dinking around in Klamath. I have enough money to pay off Sulik's debt but would rather have armor, which is also out of my reach for the time being. So maybe I'll take Sulik. Everywhere else, I get dead quick. I still need to find the trapper. The lady who wants him back said she'd mark it on my map, and I think she meant the toxic caves. I still have a ways to go before I get another level (piddling level 3, that is), and I need another level before I can defeat all those golden geckos. I can do them one at a time, with much loss of health, but then I go broke buying healing. I need the armor!

I found Sulik to be not terribly useful, at least early on, since he's a close-range fellow. Later when you can get him very powerful sledgehammers he's deadly. However, the other problem with close-range companions is if you inadvertantly shoot them, chances are they'll become an irretrievable hostile... that armor might do better by you.

I'm rusty, though, so I may be wrong about all that.

I suck at gunplay, anyway, so that's not really a factor. I have a rifle that holds all of one bullet, but so far I have been unsuccessful in hitting anything with it. Which is to say, I am a close-range person too, at least for now.

I ended up buying Sulik, and he had a leather jacket in his inventory that I snatched for myself. We are trying to get through the toxic caves. Kill a gecko or two, go tromping around the outer world until our (my) health refills, lather, rinse, repeat. I have gotten to where I can see the feller I am supposed to rescue, and even reached him once before we all got killed. The problem now is that we have to take hits from crossing the radioactive sludge just to get that far, and then kill two more geckos. I sure have to reload a lot, but I am making progress inch by inch. Not quite having fun yet, but the promise is there.

Jen, do you have rubber boots? I think they are somewhere in Klamath, something to do with rats. I found Sulik to be very useful. His sledgehammer works great on the geckos. I found one and used it instead of a gun.

I finally got the rubber boots. Also, there was another pair right in the tunnels, through some of the sludge, which I gave to Sulik, who wouldn't put them on. Or at least I couldn't figure out how to make him wear them.

I couldn't find the Trapper Town for the longest time, because I kept looking east instead of west, "the other east." So by the time I got to the rats, they were pretty easy.

Then I went to the Den and did most of the quests there (I forgot to finish the ghost quest and chose not to break Rebecca's still; I might go back, though, and do it for the $500) and am now in Redding trying to get enough money to buy the car that's in the Den. I had over $1,000 at one time and spent half of it to buy Vic out of slavery. He is the most whiny, useless piece of meat ever! And to think I whored myself to Metzger for a price reduction on Vic's sorry butt! Actually, Vic's not that bad. I am honing my first aid and doctor skills in shutting, er, healing him up, and I took him back to the toxic caves and made him fix the generator for me. Now I just need whatever I need to open the elevator door there, dangit!

I am far enough along to be having fun now, at least.

I looked at a walkthrough to find out where Joey was and found out that the ghost quest was broken because I had sex with Joey 🙁 That'll teach me to be a walking STD :p

But I went to Vault City and Gecko and got a huge amount of experience for fixing the reactor, which was also a very fun quest. I also got the car part and am saving $$$ to get the actual car, which is hard because everything (i.e., ammo) is so expensive and I have not been putting very many points into "barter." I am now hot on the trail of the GECK in the Vault 15 place. I just got there and haven't even looked around yet.

I wield a shotgun pretty well now. I had a hunter rifle, with a scope, that turned out to be kinda useless, so I gave it to Vic when his pistol ran out of ammo.

I got another party member, Cassidy, in the Vault City courtyard. He uses the same kind of bullets as me, which makes life a bit easier.

I spent hours playing this last night, way past my bedtime. I guess I am officially addicted.

Last night I went to the New California Republic. What a bunch of stiffs they all are! And also New Reno, where I sort of accidentally killed the arms dealer and then sort of on purpose took all of his stuff. What a haul! I have me and my three guys all maxed out in carrying capacity, and I had to leave some lesser stuff behind. So I have a laser pistol and plenty of ammo for it, but now I have to level up some more so I can put points into energy weapons. I am going to go back and get the car now that I have the $$$ and the parts. I left off in Golgotha, where I was getting ready to find the $1,000 buried by a guy I hit for a mob boss.

Jen, be very careful about taking your car to New Reno. Unless you have great... what is it? Spot? Tracking? Something like that skills, you don't want to park in the city. Stow your vehicle a little bit out of town and walk back. Trust me.

Sounds like she's trying to park in San Francisco! [Image Can Not Be Found]

On my way back to get the car, I got sidetracked at Burning Hills. I picked up a couple of quests and killed a bunch of ants. My favorite part was the testing against the scorpion. I was giggling like a fool! Plus I got some good experience points for it, for doing practically nothing.

I finally bought the car, and boy is it zippy!

The village elder bugged me long-distance again to hurry up and get the GECK, so I suppose I'll focus on that next, although I already forget all of the steps of the quest for it and the PIP is somewhat less than informative in that regard.

I drove to New California and traded much of my take from killing the Reno guy for an $11,000 rifle and a boffo armor, then I was going to free the slaves as long as I was there anyway. So there I was, laying waste to slavers all over the place (I love my new rifle!) and had them all dead but one latecoming easy one, and then... the game crashed to desktop. Very disheartening!

Last time I leveled, I got a perk and picked Toughness. That seems to go well with my new boffo armor. I also put about 10 of 14 skill points into energy weapons, but I still can't hit much with that laser pistol. When I do, though, it hurts. Enemies, not me. So I will stick with my rifle for another one or two levels.
