I took the non-lethal route with Campbell. That was a good mission; I felt that the completionist in me was satisfied (5/5 bone charms, 6/7 runes) but I know I didn't explore some areas on my final save, like the Kennels. I visited it once on a "garbage run" (what I call the crazy playstyle you adopt once you know you'll be re-loading your game because of [x] mistake), but not again. Maybe that's a form of cheating...I call it exploring!

That really was an excellent mission though. Did any of you read that book in the Archvives, "The Movements of Corvo Attano"? I read it and much to my surprise, it mentioned things I had done in *that* mission, leading up to that point. Yes, I remember talking to that woman, yes I guess I talked to those...men (I forget what they were mentioned as here), but the part I was most pleased with was when it said last sighting: entering the sewers outside of Coldridge Prison. Nobody had a confirmed sighting of me since, and the game certainly took note of that. Brilliant!

I haven't begun the next mission yet, and I have a boatload of coin to perhaps upgrade a few things. As far as the supernatural powers go, I've selected the most stealth-y ones: Bend time (this was very useful in subduing Campbell and the other guy without being detected), Agility (the double jump opens up a ton of exploration without completely relying on Blink) and Dark Vision, which is incredibly useful, but unlike Arkham Asylum, you don't feel compelled to leave it on all the time.

I dispatched the Pendleton brothers, non-lethally of course. Another very satisfying mission, but I'm glad this next one has me off to a different part of the city; I want to explore it all, but have a feeling more revisits are in order.

Nonetheless, this game is a pleasant surprise as I was not expecting something so Thief-y to ever happen again. I've been reading/watching a few reviews and while it seems to be well-liked everywhere, everyone fails to mention this Thief influence. They've all said Bioshock (the similarities end at the surface, mostly because they share the same engine) and DX/DXHR. It's really not anything like those; maybe a bit in common with the first DX, but mainly, like a few of you have said around here, this is Thief 21st century edition. And that is a very good thing. The average games writer is probably in their early-to-mid thirties ... are you telling me a good deal of them never knew the glorious joy that was Thief?!

Speaking of glorious, I have a Friday off and the house is mostly tidy so I'll be chugging along through Dunwall some more. Yipee.

electroshock < Oh, that Bunting was a weird guy.

xtal, you are just cooking right along!

I'm in Sokolov's house stealing hiz internetz.

Getting to his house and him via the roof was relatively easy. Now I just need to get him out since I can't seem to Blink while holding something. Plus there appears to be goodies that need investigating on the lower floors... where the guards are roaming.

On my way in, I found a safe in a partially collapsed room, but I've not come across the combination. foo

Note to self: beware secret rooms. You just never know what might be awaiting you inside.

I'm on the way to Sokolov myself! Approaching Kaldwin's Bridge ... there is some nasty Tesla-coil-y thing zapping rats and thugs. Ouch.

It's too bad I somehow killed 2 people in the prison (maybe I left their bodies too near the escape door when it went boom?) because I haven't killed anyone since, and can probably make it the whole way without killing anyone else now that I can stop time altogether. Drat. Those are the only trophies I care to collect, the actually impressive ones. Hopefully the game still rewards one for being mostly merciful.

Edit: I've learned that bone charms are randomized when you enter each level. Unfortunately in my case I haven't really collected any that are terribly useful. Drinking water to recover mana helps, and I guess climbing faster is nice too, but I want something that allows wind-like movement whilst sneaking, because Agility II apparently did not help that at all :(

I've got one that makes choking really fast, which is awesome, but few others are that great so far. I need one that makes rats not eat me.

Chaos is "high" in my Dunwall. I was a little too bloody in the prison and the Campbell mission. No more!

Still trying to juggle this and XCOM.

I have one that says rats won't bother me unless I get too close. No idea where I found it. I should probably equip it since the rats, like mosquitoes in real life, enjoy chomping the crap outta me. icon16

I've also found blueprints for quieter boots, but I have to wait until mission's end to turn that in to what's-his-name.

Took me some hours to turn off that Arc Pylon on the south end of the bridge. That thing killed me a number of times before I found a few places out of its line of sight so it wasn't frying my ass.

Sokolov has left the building.

Note to self: freeing imprisoned survivors before removing the guards doesn't always end well.

Started the next mission and came up against my first "tall boy". While staking one out to find its weakness I'd Blinked across the street, guy working the "tall boy" saw me and called out to the other guard, who was on foot, for help. Silly second guard ran right into a rat swarm... which he'd been studiously avoiding 'til that point. Finally possessed a fish to get inside the Boyle mansion... after I fell into the river while trying to Blink across.

Anyone else find it odd that most of the ammo you find is strictly for killing? Especially considering this is billed as a stealthy game. For every single sleep dart I find, I'll come across a huge stash of bullets or standard bolts. And you can recover standard bolts! I demand more sleep darts!

Lady Boyle has, indeed, hosted her last party.

Managed to ghost this mission... after all, if everyone is wearing a mask who's going to notice one more? There were a couple of seriously creepy masks at that party. Due to a strange, unexplained twist, I ended up killing one person. Well I'm assuming that's the kill that was counted 'cause I certainly don't remember any other. (That guard eaten by rats was not my doing!)

Back to Dunwall tower.

Toger, our progress is mirrored! I really enjoyed the Boyle party mission. I loved the change of pace it provided, being able to walk among your enemies, scope out the estate and choose one of the many ways to tackle it. I went completely non-lethal, as I've been doing, and managed not to spoil the party. Great mission.

The return to Dunwall Tower was as I expected: heavily guarded. This was the first mission where I didn't bother to go out of my way to collect all the runes and bone charms, or look for much of anything else, like paintings. It didn't seem pressing to do those things when once you're inside the tower your goals are so close.

I again went non-lethal and exposed the Lord Regent's crimes.

[skip spoilers]

I am now in the Flooded District hoping the end of this game won't be a letdown. I knew I could trust the boatman to be loyal, but what of the outsider? I wonder if he'll stay on the sidelines completely or reveal some hidden agenda (wouldn't be surprised).

I've just climbed to the top of the tower. Probably won't get a chance to play until tomorrow.

I've not trusted any of them since the beginning. Have you read any of the Admiral's journal entries? Yeah, there's trust there. Not. rolleyes

I've spoiler tagged our thoughts. smile

Argh, XCOM and a full weekend have kept me from Dishonored. I'll play tonight. I'm still on the Sokolov mission... having a lot of trouble with that central area of the bridge. You guys are too good!

I'm the stealth fuckin' master.

Not really, but it's just fun to say.

Even if I am near the end (it feels near) I would hardly say this has been a short game. I could see it if you played guns blazing and very efficiently blew everyone away on your first attempt but... eh who plays that way?

Toger:

The Admiral's journal entries about "power this" and "control that" were a glaring signpost that these loyalists were not as noble as they claimed.

xtal:

Did you deliver Pendleton's note to Lord Snow (I think that was his name or I've been reading too much G.R.R.Martin) and take part in the duel? That was very odd. I had no clue what was happening until they said "choose your weapon"!

I did deliver the note to Lord Shaw, but upon discovering what was happening I re-loaded from my last save and just ignored him altogether. An interesting side mission, one that left me more suspicious of Lord Pendleton than I already was.

Not the first side mission I ignored either: I didn't poison the distillery gang's elixir supply either; just didn't seem right.

Some parts of Dunwall have such a City 17 vibe. I think it was an inspiration, for sure.

Dishonored's art director is Viktor Antonov, the former Valve employee who created City-17.

Makes total sense then. And the tallboys, I mean, they're practically the striders from Half-Life 2, both of course with a strongly borrowed dose of War of the Worlds. Ahhh dystopias.

I finished the game. The following is not a heavy or specific spoiler, just my ruminations, but you may choose to read them after you have finished your own games, for fear of my opinion clouding your expectations. If you care not, read on.

I was really hoping for some kind of epilogue (still in game, still controlling Corvo) ... like a brief ceremony to crown Emily the proper Empress, or some sort of public vindication for Corvo's actions, and reckoning for your enemies. Just something, anything. Instead, the second I saved Emily my first-person view faded and I was treated to two minutes of still images ala Fallout 3's ending, and a bit of "oh, well this happened, and that happens" ... but then the very end ... ugh, it just reeked of Bioshock's terribly cheese ending; it was almost identical, though not as ridiculous. I didn't really care for what the ending (and Havelock's seventh journal entry) strongly hinted at either. Felt tacked on.

Aside from my personal disappointment, Dishonored was a thrilling game, and I think I'll play it again, immediately probably. It's worth it.

After my Guns of Icarus session with Gregg on Sunday morning I hunkered down and had a Dishonored marathon that pretty much ran from the middle of Kaldwin's Bridge right up to confronting the Lord Regent.

Yesterday it was a matter of moving forward from the Flooded District (the only level that got a bit boring, to tell the truth). By then I was tired of searching for coins and trinkets.

Oh, and election related, check this out: apparently Colbert (or Stewart? I forget which said it) was right when saying Canadians are all a bunch of "gay socialists." And yes, we have 5 serious federal parties (3 serious on a national level)!

Xtal, can I come live with you if Romney wins? I'll just sleep on the couch until I can find a job, get used to the metric system, and get a home of my own. That infographic proves what I've long suspected: I need to be surrounded by Canadians.

But what the F is wrong with Alberta? What's their freakin' problem?

Alberta has lots and lots of oil, so there are probably many Romney sympathizers out there. In the crazy wild west! Shit's so crazy in the AB, I remember when my cousins lived there about ten years ago they were getting their beginner drivers licenses at 14! They also have this highway called the Deerfoot, I think, and it's like Canada's version of the autobahn. They also coat the outsides of their houses in stucco. And it snows in July and there are sometimes heat waves in the dead of winter because of chinooks.

As David Byrne put it: "I wouldn't live there if you paid me to!"
