I just finished the Valley of Defilement. I had Garl Vinland down to a sliver of health and suddenly he had full health again. I said the heck with that and pulled out my bow and killed the Maiden Astrea instead. Anyone visiting that place needs to bring Widows Lotus because you get the plague very easily. Glad that part is done. Back to the Boletarian Palace now.
I just started 1-4 and dispatched the three BPs. Glad to hear they don't respawn as it took a while to kill them. One was really good at dodging soul arrows. I think the crystal lizard got away. I know I forgot to bring a spell I planned to use, so it is back to the Nexus for me.
King Allant is supposed to be hard. I hope to keep my distance as much as I can and not lose a soul level.
SB, I didn't realize that you saved Ostrava. I wish was able to get the key, but he disappeared for me. [Image Can Not Be Found]
When I killed Garl Vinland in the Valley, he dropped the Dark Silver Shield and the matching armor. May come in handy.
I've literally just this minute took on those three BPs at 1-4. The one with the sword was easy enough to lure out, the archer was a pain to hit more than once at a time and she eventually dashed out and hit me with a firestorm thing. That really surprised me. The guy with the tower shield and scraping spear... well, I went back to the Nexus dumped all my gear and picked up a load of stuff I wasn't likely to use. My asian blades break so easily and a few hits from that spear would have broken them! When I got back to him I realised I could use soul remains to distract him and hit him from behind. Worked a treat!
I found a way to get the crystal lizard without having to chase him. Position yourself to the right of the dead dragon as close as you can without walking over its tail and just to the left of the pillar so the crystal lizard is in full sight. From there you'll be able to pummel it with arrows and it'll not be able to run off because of the barricades in the way.
Apparently the Dark Silver Shield is the best in the game all round. I've stuck with the Kite Shield because it's lighter, has a better guard break reduction and is easier to upgrade. The Knight Shield was tempting but again, it was a bit heavy for my character.
I actually rescued Ostrava and saw him at the Nexus, then shortly afterwards I found his dead body close to where I rescued him and the Mausoleum key. I've no idea what happened but I'm guessing he died somehow. One of Demon's Souls many mysteries.
King Allant sounds scary.
I'm going back to the nexus and doing a lot of preparing before I attack 1-4 again. I've only killed the three BPs so far. They weren't hard, just took time luring them out and attacking with magic. They were a bit trickier than other BPs I've met.
Is that the first crystal lizard? I thought I saw him in the first room and now he is gone but he is supposed to be down the hall. I'll try your method if I find him. The one in 5-3 was impossible to kill. When I targeted him and ran after him, the target shifted to the depraved ones. So kill them with arrows first.
I wonder if Ostrava's key might still be in 1-2. I assumed once I left the world it would no longer be available. I'll check it out. Still hoping he might show up in 1-4. He is so unpredictable.
The blue dragon may be a problem too. I'm not sure how to get by him by just running.
Yes I saved Ostrava, not that I got anything great out of the mausoleum, except for use in new game+ I guess. I'd like that dark silver shield for magic defense.
I had a hard time with those 3 BPs as well, except for the sword guy. After realizing I could get behind tower shield guy when he attacked it was much simpler. The archer was probably the toughest. I don't remember her using a spell on me though.
I killed the blue dragon with a boat-load of arrows. If you hit him enough at the first point he flies away. I was too scared to try sprinting past. If you can run up the stairs right under him (assuming Biorr is there) you can just whale on him with a bow again.
I've been having rotten luck with crystal lizards of late.
I just killed Old Hero. Pretty easy if you stay out of his way and use hit-and-run. I had a much more difficult time with just level 4-2 itself, especially those hidden reapers. I died a number of times. I also killed Storm King, who I was wholly unprepared for but who turned out to be almost disappointingly easy. I was too chicken to run far from the entrance, so I didn't find the special item until after. I was able to hunker down behind a rock and survive its javelin attacks and shoot soul rays. I had forgotten to buy arrows beforehand.
Wow, that Nexus music is pretty creepy now. I've got 1-4 and everything after 5-1 left.
Rule #2: Double-tap
Well, I just ran past the first Blue Dragon (not hard, just chase the flame) and am getting up the courage to run past the second one on the stairs. If Ostrava isn't there, then I won't have to fight a black phantom. Fighting Storm King, it is best to stay by the door. I did run down and get the Stormruler sword and it worked great.
I haven't had much luck with crystal lizards lately either. In the room with the 3 BPs, I got stuck behind a wagon and couldn't chase the first one, The second one I ran down, but a redeye jumped out at me.
I got past the dragons and Ostrava wasn't there.....but his black phantom was. He killed me when I tried using soul ray on him. He has a shield that blocks most magic. I'll be heading back with better equipment and hope for a better result. I did try to get pure moonlight to get my winged moon spear to +5 but couldn't get the drop.
Yes, I got to Ostrava after braving the second dragon-dash up the stairs. Biorr got fried. I got Ostrava down to half health then he knocked me off the edge 🙁
The blue dragon needs to go though. Apparently he's only susceptible to projectiles and my arrows don't do an awful lot of damage to him meaning I'd need hundreds to take him out. That doesn't sound too appealing to me but if it makes the trip to King Allant easier...
I do believe you can run by the dragons almost 100% of the time. Just follow the flame on the first one after taking out the Fat Ministers. I didn't kill the second minister but managed to run by him. Make sure you are less than 50% equipped weight to run fast. Water veil and Purple Flame Shield help too, though I don't think they are necessary. On the second dragon, start running when he flames from R to L (with 1 second delay). I had no damage on either run.
I'm moving faster on the second run. I run by the crossbow men in the beginning. The redeyes and the black phantom seem much stronger than before.
Old King Allant is dead. I guess that pretty much beats the game since there are no more battles. The Maiden in Black is standing beside a big hole in the center of the Nexus but I want to try a few more things and maybe a few upgrades. I got by the BP the second time I met him by using my Winged Moon Spear and a couple grasses. I may start a new game with all my equipment and see if I can get Ostrava's key. I'll kill him as soon as I see him.
It was a lot of fun but very nerve wracking. I'll probably pick up Dark Souls. Call me crazy. [Image Can Not Be Found] When I started this game, my goal was to just get by Phalanx. Then it was to beat a few more demons. I believe I ended with soul level 70 and put in 160 hours.
Warning….don't talk to the Maiden in Black until you are ready to go to the end game.
160 hours, wowzers! You got your miles with Demon's Souls. Demon's Miles.
I was saying to my friend (who's completed both Demon's Souls and Dark Souls) how pretty much every confrontation and moment in Demon's Souls is utterly nerve wracking. Each success is a milestone; a hard won victory; one small step forwards. We spoke about how it's you versus the game, which in turn hates you. If the game gives you an inch, you'll sure as hell try and take a mile (I'm thinking of the Flamelurker glitching out on me here). It's not a game that gets bogged down with explaining stuff either, it just says "This is how easy it is to die" and then expects you to learn as you go, oftentimes the hard way. There are certain things about it that really do drive me mad, the targeting mainly but there's no mistaking its allure. Hell, I was adamant I wouldn't return to Demon's Souls but here I am.
It's true, there's no shame in taking all you can wherever you can get it. I've made heavy use of both wikis despite their occasional spoilers; I use poison like it's going out of style; I let bad guys fall off cliffs, I'm shameless. I figure if the game's going to be so mean to me, I've earned it.
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
A large number of hours were spent trying to get past Phalanx. He wasn't that hard, it was just getting to him. I was beginning to think this game wasn't for me. After that, though, it got easier. I was willing to use anything at my disposal to move on. No way I was going toe to toe with King Allant and die over and over, He got poisoned.
I defeated Ostrava (tough fight, heavy blows even when blocked) but didn't fancy like proceeding until I'd spent as many souls as I possibly could so made an ill fated trip back to the archstone where I got fried by the blue dragon. I've popped a few ephemeral stones and the world tendency is shifting towards black which isn't good given that King Allant is apparently one of the hardest bosses in the game, at least according to my friend. I managed to kill a lot of the crystal lizards dotted around in 1-4 which has given me some much needed ore for upgrades.
Anyway, I've spent most of my souls, upgraded my Kite Shield to +9 and ready for either the Valley or King Allant. Any advice? I'm considering the Baby's Nail for King Allant as it inflicts Plague and following it up with the Makoto (a heavy bleeding asian blade). Ring-wise, I'll be equipping the Regenerator Ring to offset the HP drain of the Makoto and the Masters Ring to increase my direct damage.
If you want to do it the easy way, use poison cloud. Walk behind the wall on the left and wait till he turns and then walk behind him and cast every 3 min. Takes a while. Good luck if you use melee.
The valley is easier. Once I got through 5-2, it was easy to do it again.
The sounds in the Nexus are very creepy now. I'm heading to the lava and see if I can get those dragonstone chunks for my dragon long sword.
I killed Old King Allant and finished the game. He fell to my hit-and-run melee tactics. It was a pretty satisfying victory. I did die once out of carelessness, but had Second Chance active (whew!). geggis, the key is to hit him and roll away and not give him a chance to use that level-stealing move. You can heal while he winds up for his big area effect spell (run away first). Roll when he does his rush attack. You should be able to block it no problem with that leveled-up shield. As in all tough battles, be patient.
I finished at Soul Level 84 and 58 hours logged, although I should add the 50 hours I put into my other character (Royalty) before switching to melee.
I've been reflecting on all I've read from others on how Demon's Souls is this or that. It is a difficult game, but as Pokey mentioned, once you get that first boss under your belt, it gets easier, or at least more understandable. The "language" of the game is just so different from today's norm. I don't think I ever would have beaten it without a ridiculous amount of help from FAQs and wikis.
The closest game to this, in my mind, is Diablo. It almost feels like From's riff on that Blizzard classic. I can honestly say I really, really like this game. The next games in my queue seem shallow in comparison. An odd thought I know. I am definitely getting Dark Souls. Right now I'm ready to try another character build.
And way to go Pokey for beating us all to the end!
