I forgot to mention in this thread that I killed Patches (partly because my brother and a friend egged me on after he tricked me -- he did deserve it), as a result I am unable to purchase heavy arrows henceforth. Bummer.
Edit: Hmm... *dry yelp* It seems that you indeed don't want Yurt hanging around. Apparently he kills NPCs in the Nexus!! This is why I love Demon's Souls: don't close doors of opportunity but keep an eye out, you never know what might come out of them. I closed the door on Patches but in Yurt's case an NPC killer has come waltzing in.
I killed Yurt before he could cause any mischief. I'm such a cheater. I've been reading the wiki profusely. I'd have never known he was on a quest for murder in the Nexus otherwise. I also would not have known how to defeat the Adjudicator. The first time I tried to keep a distance as well and he killed me in about 10 seconds.
I used the shortcut to get to him (rolling off the tower where you find the copper key) so repeated tries weren't that bad and I ended up with a big haul of souls since I'd stun him, touch my bloodstain, and then continue fighting.
After I killed him I was invaded in 4-2. This wasn't the first time it's happened, but the first time I actually ran into the Black Phantom. He broke my armor, my weapons, gave me the plague and poisoned me. But that wasn't the worst part. It was right near the entrance, where Blige sits. I didn't know this and he tricked me into accidentally attacking Blige. I was not amused. He was obviously a dedicated PvP'er and I was completely unprepared for such an encounter.
Rule #2: Double-tap
Botch, there's no shame in depending on a wiki for a Souls game. I've depended heavily on the Dark Souls wiki and probably wouldn't have gotten through Sen's Fortress (which I did last night! woot!) without it.
That PvPer sounds like a delightful little runt. I hope someone stabs him in the face sometime soon.
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
geggis I'm focused on fighting from a distance. So arrows are pretty important. Objectively speaking, it's fascinating that this game allows you to kill any NPC and live with the consequences. I haven't gone back to check, but I'm assuming Blige will be hostile to me now (I didn't actually kill him). I've had some scares where I accidentally hit a button and almost attacked someone. The PS3 controller is such that when you set it down, it rests on L2&R2, and near as I can tell there's no pause.
On a related note, it's also fascinating how unashamedly obtuse this game is. There's no clear indication of how your actions affect World Tendency. You just have to really pay attention (or read a FAQ). I don't see a strategy guide anywhere so how do people figure all these things out (this action changes world tendency by -2)? Frankly, I'm not sure I would stay interested without a lot of help. Call me lazy or pampered, but it's true.
Oh, and by broken I meant durability=0. I didn't lose anything, just had to pay some high prices to fix everything.
Rule #2: Double-tap
SB, Blige may forgive you if you are lucky. I've heard of some players repeatedly attacking NPCs with no consequences. Hope you are lucky. I've only accidently bumped the blue guy in the Nexus. He didn't like it , but didn't attack me. I usually unequip my weapon in the Nexus unless I am just going from one zone to another.
That PVP player deserves a good beat down. I'm playing offline so don't have to put up with it.
I love this game because we have situations like Yurt committing mayhem in the Nexus. If you weren't aware of it by reading the Wiki, you would figure it out when you returned to the Nexus and saw the bodies.
At least he (supposedly) kill's Freke's apprentice first, who is pretty much rendered redundant by Freke himself. Did he kill anyone in your game Pokey?
I can't really complain about the Black Phantom. I was playing online after all and knew such things could happen. I suppose what bothered me the most is how much of a beat-down I received. Injured pride and whatnot. It was a good lesson. And thinking back I'm not certain he was deliberately trying to sabotage one of my NPCs. I think Blige just got in the way as I wildly flailed about trying to land a blow.
Pokey, when playing offline, is it difficult to sway World Tendency to either extreme? Actually, I guess it's no different than playing online, except for what tendency at which you start after logging in.
Rule #2: Double-tap
SB, I had read enough to know I had to kill him. It was easy to do it in 3-2 since you can knock him off the platform. I didn't want him to get to the Nexus. He does kill a lot of people if you let him live, many of them important.
I think world tendency works the same way offline as online. Killing certain people makes it go toward black. Killing a demon pushes it toward white. My worlds except for the Valley of Defilement are very white. Online is influenced a bit by other happenings. I've pretty much decided to not worry about it as I haven't seen any serious repercussions. There is one demon that is supposed to be easier to kill if offline.
If you want a guide, this is a pretty good one. I think the wiki with its maps are very helpful. I've checked out a few threads on the game as well.
I just killed Maneater. He was very annoying, always taking off and flying away. I got the first one through the fog door with my bow. Firestorm was a big fizzle. I used it twice and it did no damage at all. Maybe it will work on the crystal lizard den. I mainly used my Moonspear+4 and flame toss, while dancing around the brazier. I did it while in body form.
Finally! I killed Old Monk. I don't know why he was so hard for me. I tried all kinds of combinations. He was pretty good at dodging magic. My weapons didn't seem to be doing much damage--about 1/3 of normal. I got backstabbed a few times toward the end. I won with my Moon Winged Spear+4 and Purple Flame Shield and wearing part of the Gloom armor that protects against bleeding. The final battle seemed almost easy.
Only Valley of Defilement and 1-4 left. I'm off to 5-1.
xtal: wicked.
I finally opened the gate in 1-3. Good feeling taking out all those red-eyes. OK 2 of them, but they're tough enough by themselves.
I got invaded the other night again. I was playing around with a different character build so I was pretty low level still and it was a much fairer fight. It happened around the second tower in 1-2. It was a long, drawn out battle with much grass consumed. I had him in big trouble but I pressed the attack when I shouldn't have and he took me out with a Soul Arrow. It was close.
I got invaded again tonight in 4-1 and the guy killed Vanguard! Everything he killed gave me more souls but still. And I never found Vanguard's dropped soul. I didn't realize black phantoms could do that. I know they can't kill level bosses or NPCs but there are other things that don't persist if killed. I love the cooperative online aspect, but from now on when I get invaded, I'm just going to log out of PSN.
Nice going Pokey. I don't know who Old Monk is yet (don't tell me). You're on the home stretch!
Rule #2: Double-tap
Finished the Shrine of Storms last night and did a run through the level trying to find any chunks of bladestone. No luck, but I didn't die once and managed to defeat the Vanguard on my own. Admittedly I did keep my distance for 98% of the time, lunging in when he did overhead swipes, but it worked. Those crystal lizards near the Storm King's domain were an absolute nightmare to deal with and so far I've only got one out of the three. Every time I revisit the place they're nowhere to be seen though :'-(
So with the Shrine of Storms completed that leaves me with the Valley of Defilement (the whole shebang *gulp*) and Boletarian Palace 4. The music has changed in the Nexus to a foreboding organ track as well and it feels a damn sight less welcoming now.
I've just barely started the Valley and wish I was back in the Bolitarian Palace. I'm familiar with part of it from my dash to get the Blessed Mace. Sounds like later parts are even worse.
SB, did you ever try going into the lava lake? I decided I need those stones for my Dragon Sword and wonder what my chances are using my best fire resistant armor, ring and water veil spell. It's going to be a slog to even get down there. Anybody try it? [Image Can Not Be Found]
