It is referring to the modifiers. When upgrading, you would go with one that uses your best attributes. I would never go with a dex-based weapon since I have a low dex. Anything using strength or magic would be better.

Still working my way through 1-3. A red eye knight is in my way. I've never really fought one honestly. Hope I can handle him. I'd like to get that shortcut gate open before I lose my body.

Later….darn it, I'm dead. Silly mistake again. An Imperial Spy got me from behind in a surprise attack while I was picking up an item dropped by a corpse, a stupid slave shield. [Image Can Not Be Found]

The return trip went fast and I got by a couple red eyes. Gate is right ahead.

I tried 1-3 tonight, but only for a bit.  Those soldiers right at the beginning, on the stairs, kept stunning me and one-hit killing me.  I was going toe-to-toe with them for some blasted reason.  Must be tired.  I quit in frustration.

I've only faced the red eye in 1-1.  I killed him before he could get to me.  Getting up close with one of those is a frightening prospect.

Those soldiers go down quickly using soul arrow. I prefer to pull one away and use my moon winged spear. I get stunned occasionally too. I've been using soul arrow against the red eyes with success, finding an open area that I can move backward while casting. I stabbed one through the fog door with my spear. I've never gone up against one with melee.

I plan to attack the gate tomorrow, being very careful so I don't die by some silly mistake and miss opening the shortcut.

Edit....Well, I got the gate open, but no Ostrava. I know I saved him in 1-2. He even showed up in the nexus afterward. How do I get the mausoleum key?

After opening the gate in 1-3, I rescued Bioor. I was scared I might lose all my souls to the fat minister guarding Yuria, so I went back to the nexus and then to 4-3, the Storm King. After many deaths, I found a good method to kill him fairly easily. I'm heading back to see if I can rescue Yuria, though I have my body and that makes me nervous. I'd rather play in soul form.

So Pokey, you're through both Dragon God and Storm King now? Nicely done! It's off to Latria for you. That place is a little less horrible than the Valley of Defilement, but be sure you bring a spare weapon and suit of armor. There are these slime things that degrade your equipment to broken-ness in seconds.

I'm working through 3-1 now.  I hear this woman's voice singing and it's creeping me out.  Like a siren call.  I get creeped out easily.  1-3 was just kicking my tail too much.

I also spent some time farming to upgrade my shield and spear.

I found the source of the singing and it was a relief.  Nice to hear a sane voice in this forsaken prison.  I like the black leather gear.  Better than my wizard stuff.

I just defeated Penetrator. He is scary looking, but the easiest demon yet. With Biorr's help I didn't have to do much. I tossed in a half dozen soul rays when he asked for help, but he probably could have done it on his own. I was still in body form after Storm King and freed Yuria, which gives Firestorm, fought through a horde of soldiers and red eyes and finished still in body form.

I may try Maneater next. SB, how are you doing? Reached the demon yet? The dreglings will make it hard to target her if you don't kill them first.

I defeated the Maneater(s) at Latria(?) last year some time and they were tough as hell. I fell off while trying to avoid them so many times...

Finally picked up Demon's Souls again last night for the first time in... it must be over six months.

The Shrine of Storms was my first stop. THOSE GODDAMN MANTA RAYS. Were they always that annoying? After firing many, many, many arrows at them I decided it was a waste of time trying to kill them because if they didn't kill me then the skeletons would. I got past the skeletons, got past all those reapers, 'light beam' spectres and female stealth spectres (listen out for them and watch your back) then I ended up in a room full of slugs and glowing things that exploded if they spotted you. That was a bit of an annoying room actually. Then I fought the Old Hero who I did pretty well against for a first attempt. Unfortunately I lost a lot of souls trying to reach him for the third time so decided to call it a night. But I will be back you blind bastard, wielding my enchanted knife in both hands.

I'm not nearly as far along as you Pokey.  Last night I defeated the Fool's Idol.  Not hard at all, but I had help from the FAQ (kill the Dregling liar).  Now that I've freed Sage Freke, it opens up some nice magic.  I purchased some good ones with souls and now I'm exploring 3-2 in body form.

I was debating which area to tackle: 1-3, 3-2 or 4-1, and went with 3-2 for now on a whim.  Gargoyles look frightening, but Soul Ray makes quick work of them.

Oh lord, I'd forgotten them, the ones that laugh and melt into the walls? Between them, the reapers, and the light-beam specters my time in that portion of the Shrine was unpleasant indeed.

I played a Temple Knight but never got heavily into magic, something I think hurt me in the long run. I couldn't defeat the Penetrator, and even the gargoyles in Latria gave me a hard time. I'm trying to learn from my mistakes in Dark Souls and investing a little more in magic this time around, though Dark Souls magic doesn't work the same way. Keep it up guys!

The Shrine of Storms with the reapers and shadowlurkers was the worst for me. I ran past the reapers but had to fight most of the shadowlurkers because they blocked the way. I once tried running past all of them and was 1 second from escaping all of them in both parts in the stairs when I got hit in the back.

SB, if you get tired of that first bunch of gargoyles, you can run past them to the doorway.

The Manta Rays in 4-1 didn't bother me much. I killed a couple I could reach with soul arrow, but if I kept moving, they would miss and when they hit, it didn't do much damage. The mantas in 4-3 are a different story. They have a devastating attack and are hard to kill.

They're the ones I'm talking about, in 4-3! Nasty things. I realised the reason why I was getting so much grief from them this time was because I'd unequipped the thief ring in favour of a ring that increased my equip burden so I could use fluted armour. Once I re-equipped it they couldn't see me and I was free to stand still as much as I liked.

Just defeated the Old Hero and I got that soothing calm feeling that I'd forgotten about. You know the one you get when you return to the Nexus with a bag of souls and a lots of stuff to get rid of after defeating a demon? That one. "Soul of the lost withdrawn from its vessel..."

There seems to be another portal after the Old Hero so I'll take a look there next...

That's Storm King and all the troublesome mantas I was referring to.

Ah. Hm... oh dear. Here's hoping my thief ring keeps me out of sight.

I want more bladestone for my sharp weapons (secret dagger and possibly my uchigatana) but I'm also thinking that mercurystone would be good for my uchi (poison and bleeding). I'm tempted by the winged spear behind my adjudicator shield as well. Or a war scythe. A spear that does poison damage might be really handy though. Choices choices!

I have a serious weakness for Eastern European accents, and so maintained a healthy crush on The Maiden in Black despite the fact that her feet are dirty and her face has been burned off by hot wax. A Russian accent can forgive so many things. It's the same reason I love Tali from the Mass Effect games.

Pokey, as hateful as those manta rays are, if you have a Thief ring and good archery skills, they're worth their weight in souls. I farmed them extensively.

I went all the through 3-2 unscathed, although I had a close encounter with a gargoyle on a lift.  Then Maneater killed me.  I was actually doing pretty well, dodging his rushes and shooting, but then a second one showed up and that did me in.  I gave up on that one for now.

I just killed the Adjudicator after I don't know how many tries.   Pretty much one hit to my low-vitality character was all it took.  Didn't lose my souls though so I had a pretty nice take.

Did you kill Yurt? You don't want him hanging around. I spent a lot of time preparing for my assault on Maneater. I have Firestorm but not sure I want to use it since it is unreliable. I'll probably rely on my winged spear and flame toss and running around the brazier. I thought the Adjudicator was pretty hard. After the first try with soul arrow, he kept knocking the floor out from under me, so I had to use melee. Got him the first time with that, though it was really close.

I rescued Yurt and he's back at the Nexus looking all badass and evil. Not sure what he's up to though and can't remember what I got back in return.

I don't remember having too much trouble with the Adjudicator. It was more the journey there and those dual wielding katana skeletons. Those things are vicious. My encounter with the Maneater(s) made me realise how Demon's Souls stacks evasive rolls because I threw myself off that walkway so, so many times. I'd hammer the roll button and once I started rolling I'd stop but it would remember the other presses and do another which would seal my fate. It was really, really irritating.
