And here I thought Helmut's effervescent work on XtraNormal was The Best Thing Ever. I was wrong! This, people, THIS is the best thing ever!

Raptors. Why'd it have to be raptors?

I just found out that From had previously made a series of games on the PS1 and PS2 called King's Field.  The Souls games are sort of spiritual successors of these.  Has anyone ever played any of them?  Supposedly there are four but only three ever made it to the US and only one of those is a PS2 title.  My consoling days don't reach back further than the PS2/Xbox/Gamecube generation and I'd never heard of the fourth game, the lone PS2 title, sub-titled The Ancient City, until recently.  It sounds like something I'd like though.

I didn't have consoles at the time, so though I knew about King's Field I've never played any of them. As I understand it, they were pretty similar to the Souls games, though first-person and a little more dungeon-crawly. They had quite a little cult following. I may have to dust off my PS2 and see if I can get a copy of one of these games, just to see what started it all.

Actually, xtal, to tell the complete truth I stole that from Spielberg/Lucas in Raiders of the Lost Ark. Transmuting Steerpike's face onto some playmobile characters is, however, my own original work. Licensing terms available on demand.

Looks as though the Demon's Souls servers are finally going to be retired, at least in North America, at the end of May.

What's the word on Dark Souls Botch? 😉

No pressure or anything, it's just that I've got an open game slot at the moment and it's oddly Dark Souls shaped! I'm just a bit reluctant to start anything else if you've just bought it and are contemplating starting it soon. I'm not a fan of juggling too many games at once, that's how I end up abandoning them and/or forgetting them.

Oh shit, Demon's Souls servers offline at the end of May you say? I need to pick it back up and beat the damn thing before I'm forever alone in that world. I couldn't bear that!

For the first god knows how many hours of Demon's Souls I was internet-less or at least my connection was so funky it wasn't worth using (for fear of the game randomly disconnecting me). It's very palatable all alone but when I finally did get connected it was scary when I got invaded by a Black Phantom, and, admittedly, a little disappointing too because said connection wasn't quite good enough for any sort of consistent fluid combat -- it was laggy and unpredictable. How far are you along with Demon's Souls now Maxtal?

I'm ambivalent about the online component as well.  As much as I like seeing ghosts running around plus hints and bloodstains, getting invaded is a huge drag.  Mostly because the guys doing the invading are focused PvP'ers.  The good tends to outweigh the bad though.

Haven't touched it in a month, Gregg. Took a break to thoroughly revisit Mass Effect. Got that out of my system. Back to Demon's Souls.

I'm really going to miss the online component. I just feel connected with it (this is coming from someone who doesn't go out of his way to "be connected to people" or have any use for facebook). *teardrop*

So yes, I'm back to it. It's hard to pull myself away from farming souls in 4-2. I'm level 60 now, but I kind of fear moving on. I've gone about halfway through 4-2 and those cyclops ghost things are freaking creepy. But it's either deal with them or go back to Latria. Fuck.

Xtal, sounds as though you're well equipped to deal with those Reapers (and most other things).  And besides, you have to finish and come join us in Dark Souls.  So what parts have you yet to complete?

Well, since I last posted, I decided to press on in 4-2, and after a very tricky level of sniping Reapers with my newly acquired Lava Bow (so good!) I had no problem at all with Old Hero. It was just a matter of patience, since he could never once find me and didn't land a single hit on me.

I went back to the Nexus, collected myself, then headed off to fight Storm King and his minions. I liked the arena for that battle: large outdoor area with much cover, some of it efficient and some of it completely false. I died a few times whilst rushing down to the house that seemed to provide shelter from his dozens of insanity spear-things he throws at you. On the third or fourth attempt, though, I figured out the best way to get to safety, and from there it was a matter of picking him off with Soul Arrow as he flew overhead. I thought I would run out of mana and have to resort to arrows, but the Storm King was actually quite weak to my weakest magic spell.

Last night I ventured through a bit of 1-3, and it seems like there will be much to do there. If I can wrap that one up I think I'll save the last level of Boletaria, 1-4, for later, and head back to Latria.

As it stands, I have the remaining levels to tackle: 1-3, 1-4, 3-2, 3-3, and all of the Valley of Defilement. I haven't even peeked into it, mostly because of everyone's advice here that it is truly a place of defilement.

Oh, and I'm now soul level 70. I'm pleased with my high magic level (34), vitality and intelligence (both 25). Depending on how defiled I get in world 5, I could be finished this grand adventure very soon.

I just today received an email from Atlus asking me to vote on world tendency for May 1-15; I don't know when voting closes and that takes effect, but I wonder which will win: white or black. I assumed they would do their standard 15 days of White then finish with 15 days of Black, but it seems that both could go one way or the other if it's open to voting. I voted for White, and plan to vote for Black for the final online tendency shift. (That vote is May 16).

I still have never summoned or been summoned. I would like to experience that at least once. Any of you who still have your copy should come online May 31 if you can. I have a feeling that last day might be special.

You should mop up at that level. The Valley of Defilement is pretty vile, but the bosses aren't actually that hard.  I've never participated in summoning either.  Whenever I had the opportunity, I was always occupied with my own thing.
You've got a fair bit left but nothing that cant be tackled in a month. 🙂
I voted for Black since I've never played under those conditions.

I finished 1-3, took out Penetrator. It was a good level, plenty to do. I've got Yuria back in the Nexus now, as well as Biorr. His assistance made the fight with Penetrator almost a joke. He focused his attacks entirely on Biorr except for a brief moment when my attacks got overzealous. He was dispatched quite easily.

3-2 awaits; though I'm trying to farm some crystal lizards to get invaluable upgrade stones for my shield and crescent sword. The nest in 2-2 is such a shit show. I just trained for the Firestorm spell which has huge AoE; my first attempt with it was poorly timed and I only got one lizard. Better luck with the next, hopefully.

Nice work on Penetrator, xtal. I was never able to kill that guy, even on Valentine's day when they turned all world tendencies pure white.
