Because sometimes you have to start a new topic.

I won't necessarily be posting progress in here, Infinite being a narrative driven game, but there may be ramblings or other things.

So far: the introduction is awfully pretty. The parallels to Bioshock the First are quite affecting.

Columbia: there is a certain reverence to the place. The city is awesome, of course, and frightening too. Agoraphobia not a problem. Xenophobia, definitely one.

DeWitt has no problem taking a life. Hopefully: will this be explained? Or will it stand as a hefty narrative disconnect (a la Uncharted)? We will soon know.

I saw you playing last night Xtal. I would have said hello, but honestly, neither of us wanted to talk. We wanted to play Bioshock. Both of us are tired today.

The presentation of Columbia is staggering. Even more than Rapture. It is such a... a place. The combination of religious awe and easy rocking (the buildings bob gently up and down), the colors and use of light, turn Columbia into an environment the likes of which I've never experienced before. I like the way the game started, too, since it allows you to wander the city slackjawed, but also nervous, a stranger in a strange land, just as you said. Because of the way they designed it, you can't help but imagine that Columbia is always like this, even though a number of passersby point out that it's just a really nice day.

I'll be curious to hear reactions from console players. The 360 and PS3 are not capable - literally, they don't have the capability - of the DirectX 11 effects that (to me) were such a huge part of the Columbia experience. For those of you debating platform, know that I've got everything cranked to ultra quality at 1680x1050 and I'm averaging around 60fps on a powerful-but-not-beastly rig: i7-2600K, 16GB RAM, GeForce 560 Ti.

Dewitt is likable, but you're right, the "turn" is sudden and brutal. I look forward to learning more about him. Of course, I'm like an hour in and I've already set the city on fire, so who knows where it's all going.

I don't know if I want to play Infinite. Bioshock the First flew under my radar until just before it released and then I loved every minute of it. Infinite, not so much. Living vicariously through the Bollocks play may change my mind.

It would be really handy if games put out, like, a performance test for your PC.  Or, like, a demo.  I'm paranoid because I've had some chugging on games in the past (okay, mainly The Witcher 2 and...and...something else I played around then...what was it?) and I'm not quiiiiiite up to spec with Steerpike.  Then again...DirectX.  I would generally default to this being a PS3 purchase but there's something to be said for where the PC's outpaced the old beast.

Some. Those damned monkeys scared the bejeebers outta me. I remember I played up until I kept getting killed in a room with operating tables(?). I'm pretty sure I'd spec'd myself into a no win situation from the get-go.

Interestingly, Dix, Infinite does come with a performance test that rolls its results out to a nice Excel spreadsheet. Of course you, ah, have to buy the game to get it

@Toger: I hear you about those monkeys. They were scary. Here, have a clown:

Everyone knows clowns are evil. And the fact that this particular clown is juggling baseballs (or, judging by the size, softballs - which are not soft!) does not bode well.

I had an idea (anyone who knows me in RL always runs in the other direction when I say this):

One of you playing Infinite needs to do a video "walkthrough" of the first... oh, hour or so. That would be immensely helpful in deciding whether I want to spend my hard-earned pennies for the game!

Isn't that a great idea? laugh

I'd be happy to, Toger - once I figure out how to have multiple save profiles at least - but I would feel guilty. The first hour of Infinite is not to be treated roughly. Experiencing it is not like anything else I can remember encountering in my years of gaming. Are you sure you want to see it that way?

When you put it that way, no, I'm not sure... to be honest. confused

Watching someone else play is a double-edged sword: it gives me an idea of a game's mechanics, theme, etc.; particularly if there are features I universally despise (re-spawning enemies). On the hand, I don't play the way other people do (I'm one of those people that invariably breaks a game because I don't play in the order the devs expect) and I'm constantly saying "What's that over there?" or "Go over there!" while watching videos... which is annoying for me.

I wasn't going to play the new Tomb Raider at all, but after watching about 10 videos of the gameplay I grabbed a copy when Amazon had it as a Gold Box offer.

You still need to do a video, though. I really liked the Alan Wake video.

Oh, thank you very much. I'm glad you liked it, I really do enjoy making them. And did start capturing gameplay video of Infinite last night, so maybe I will do just that...

...but I really have to advise against your idea to watch the first hour of play. It would dilute something that shouldn't be diluted. The reveal of Columbia and the first 40 minutes (where you basically just wander and get your head around it) is sort of unprecedented, though I don't want to say too much for fear of overhyping.

Toger, I'm somewhere in the middle of the game, and it will probably, mostly, seem out of context to a bystander, so if I have enough time tonight I'll record my play through of this section of the game, and if nothing too revelatory occurs I'll upload it so you can have a look-see.

It would be a good way for you to see how the game runs on a lower end machine, which I consider mine to be. I don't know my specs, other than I have an old video card (Geforce GTS 250), "only" 6GB of RAM and like... an i7 core something or other with 4 or 8 CPUs whatever the hell that means (okay, I'm playing dumb a bit, but not a lot...I'm out of touch with this crap).

Oh, and Steerpike, by all means make yours. You're very good and professional with all the video tools and such. Your videos are good entertainment.

Video is up:

Shouldn't look too bad, and it runs at a solid 30fps throughout. There is absolutely nothing in this video I would call a spoiler. There's a few voxophone recordings heard and some banter with Elizabeth, nothing I'd consider even minor.

Enjoy! (No commentary, thought I'd save time instead.)

Thanks! That was quite helpful.

I think I need to play it just to hear the period music. And the announcements.

An interesting thing is that Bioshock Infinite is two games in a couple of ways.

  • It's the first 2 hours
  • And the rest of the game

And...

  • It's the writing, setting, theme, characters, acting, and world
  • And the action-shooter

I'm at what's got to be the final confrontation and my feelings are (very positively) mixed. It's a great game and well worth your time and investment. But it has too many ideas for one game, and it's not a consistent as I'd have liked it to be. I am planning on reviewing it, though whether I'll be first to the punch or Revisiting I don't know. It's a really fantastic piece of work, from very small technical details (it's alt-tab friendly and even dynamically notices when you switch control hardware), to the over-arching concept and message. It also stumbles in a lot of ways, but those stumbles don't have long-term impact. As I was discussing with Armand, the more bothered you are by SMALL things, the better the game is. Because in less fabulous games you're more likely to just ignore small things altogether.

I'm watching your video right now, xtal, it's getting me through a very boring conference call. Great work!

Yeah, I just posted a rant that is using BioShock Infinite as a springboard but that doesn't necesarilly condemn the game. But I know it will feel pretty negative. So, to preempt the backlash or at least to voice my opinion about the game itself:

Steerpike is right in saying that BioShock Infinite makes you criticise small things with great intensity because a lot of what the game does is incredible. Unsurpassed even.

I love the setting. I love the mixture of styles, period(s) symbols and even the hands-off take on politics that some reviewers criticised. I felt it was a well handled backdrop with convincing displays of both right and left extreme, for a story that is actually personal and not all that political anyway.

I love the characters, I am especially happy how Elizabeth was handled, with respect and intelligence. A female character that is NOT designed to make you fall in love with her or desire her sexually or even get your white knight armour out? That IS awesome. Sure, her gameplay role is a bit... restricted, but so is everything else about the gameplay.

In short: for my taste the game gives up on exploration too heavily, it has barely recognisable customisation/ RPG lite mechanics, it ditches inventory management almost entirely so as a result everything outside of shooting feels like a chore. Sure, the tourist sections are lovely but there's very little to do there and what you have to do outside of the shooting boils down to a menial task of scavenging everything without thinking or planning.

And the shooting... The Kotaku article from a few days back breaks it down pretty well, but here's my 2 cents:

I love that you fight in arenas, not corridors and I love that you have so many options: guns, vigors, melee, skyhook rails, summoning stuff from tears and getting Elizabeth's assists. That in theory feels empowering. But playing on hard made for many unsatisfying combat encounters for me. The tactics go to hell as soon as the fighting starts: everything moves so quickly that you can't really plan and execute so it boils down to using area of effect vigors and shooting everything you can. I hate it how every single adversary knows where you are all of the time, so breaking line of sight and going into cover means nothing, they still pound on you all the time. This grates because you feel like you are not given a fair chance to use your skills and especially after playing Far Cry 3 it feels quaint. I hate how their AI seems to be stuck in pre-Halo, pre-MOHAA era: they stand and shoot at you or race at you regardless of whether you're shooting at them or not. This is Serious Sam-level AI and it simply does not work here. There is no effective crowd control tactic here besides murder of crows/ bronco vigors and, at least on hard, the game is so tightfisted with resources that I kept dying and respawning and chipping at the enemies one at the time. Battles become about attrition, not tactics about half way in and I didn't like that. The final battle is grandiose and really satisfying to win but it took me at least fifteen tries...

And those fucking Motorised Patriots? Jeeeez... can you say bullet sponge fast enough, before they cut you down and send you to a respawn point? They felt extremely cheap to me.
