I'm not a big fan of auctions.  I don't have the patience for it, and I don't need the adrenalin rush.  It's like gambling, and I just have no interest in gambling - with the occassional exception of lottery tickets.

Some people are getting great bargains on Swoopo.  It'll cost ya up front for bid credits.  But once you get the hang of the process, and if you are willing to lose what you paid for the bids, there might be a good deal to be had.

Anyone tried it?  Know anyone who has?

Based on your post I got an account and gave it a try. It's clearly all about understanding the system (don't bother to try and get an iPad for $0.19), but I think a good player might make a killing there.

Wow, Steerpike, you handsome (and oh-so intelligent) guinea pig!  I hope you didn't waste $24.00 for nothing.  $24 being the minimum bid package - a block of 40 bids at $.60 each.

I think I'll try it.  If I lose my $24, well, no biggie.  I haven't bought anything from eBay, by auction, for several years.  I'm partial to Buy It Now.  But I know how to wait until the final few seconds to make a bid using auto bid.  But with Swoopo, I can't figure out what the right strategy might be.  Each bid adds 20 seconds to the auction period, so bidding at the very last second ain't the way to go.  I'll think about that for a while before plunking down real cash.

I lost my $24, but it was a learning experience. Basically I think you can do very well there, especially on games (Crackdown 2 sold for $0.48 as I watched), but you have to use the "Bid Butlers" to manage multiple auctions.

Mainly I think you're not going to get outrageous deals - my dreams of a $40 iPad were shattered quickly. But if you're willing to learn the game, I think a person could do pretty well.

Having done eBay years ago the idea of losing an auction and still having to pay the amount of the last bid seems counterintuitive to me. Gambling, for sure. Not really an auction is it? Auctions everybody but the winner keep their money. Gambling what goes in to the pot stays in the pot. The house must be raking it in.
