I... I did not like Pan's Labyrinth. I know this puts me in the minority. I loved the Guillermo del Toro-ism in it, but most of the movie seemed like torture porn to me. It made me uncomfortable.

I saw House of 1,000 Corpses on AMC last night. Rob Zombie's directorial debut. Dude should've stuck with music.

I liked Pan's Labyrinth for the dichotomy between the fantastical elements and the "real world" ones.  That banquet table monster was absolutely inspired in its mixture of frailty and menace.  I can accept that the antagonist was a bit overdone though.  The world is a much more interesting place with William of the Bull in it.

Rob Zombie's other movie, The Devil's Rejects, is full blown torture porn. I was sickened by it, which is not a reaction evoked easily in my case. Never saw House.

That face/eyeball guy in Pan's was frightening. Amnesia frightening.

Pan's Labyrinth seems to be a love it or hate it movie. We had a discussion about this movie a couple of years ago on this board. A member absolutely loathed it, thought it was mean-spirited and a horrible thing. I argued for its genius. No one was swayed. Like Botch sez, it walks that line between fantasy and realism in a way few films ever pull off. I also get the oddest feeling of deja vu when watching this movie. It definitely goes deep into the psyche of the viewer. I think it addresses the archetype of the child first confronting the adult world and the incredible loss that happens when innocence is finally shaken. Most kids eventually have that "Oh shit...monsters are real and they are called grownups" moment.

Watched Stake Land. Not bad.  Holy smokes was that Kelly McGillis as the nun?

I liked it. The religious cult was nearly as scary as the zombies. I recognized the young main character from the TV show Revenge.

Did anybody watch Darabont's The Mist? That was pretty damn good.

Steerpike, you ought to watch Another Earth, I think you'd like it.

I loved the ending of The Mist. Treacherous. I love Thomas Jane, and it's also neat going back after watching TWD and seeing some actors Darabont has re-used in said show (Carol! Andrea! Maybe others I've forgotten). I watched it on Netflix maybe two years ago and couldn't even remember hearing about it in theaters or...anywhere really, and it was quite enjoyable.

Also, since it's popped into my mind, did anyone watch The Cabin in the Woods last year? It's more a black comedy of course, but as everyone says, it's the movie you can't really talk about, you just need to see it. I think it's probably the flick I enjoyed most at the theaters last year, more than even TDKR (can't let certain friends read that, though).

Geggis, correct, I had already rented it by the time I saw your post on Bait, ha ha.  Oh well, waste of 90 minutes, but not the worst movie I've ever seen.

Oh yes, everyone should watch The Cabin in the Woods if they appreciate a good black comedy. Watched it again a month or so ago and it was every bit as good as I remember.

For those who have seen it:

If you watch the section again where they go underground and the camera pans out to show you all the beasties, if you're watching in HD and have keen eyes you'll spot some of L4D's special infected... apparently Valve were going to make The Cabin in the Woods a level for L4D but something went breasts skyward.

This could go in the Kenneth sub-forum but I'll pop it here:

Watched Cabin in the Woods.  What a wild ride.  The odd thing that worked so well is that, on the one hand it lets you in on so much of what's going on, yet on the other you still don't really understand it all until late.

Yes! I watched it a second time recently and enjoyed it as much as the first viewing. Glad you liked it, Botch.

Merman FTW. (<-Wow that doesn't get red underlining. Merman is a word!)

No, I didn't! Are they in that...pull back shot? You know the one. Or are they written on the white board?

I have a strict policy that I don't buy movies anymore (on dvd) if they're more than $5, so I probably won't re-watch Cabin any time soon, but when I do I'll have to watch for the reference.

Ideally you should watch it on Blu-Ray on a massive screen so when you pause it you can see everything clearly -- it's incredible seeing the boomer, the tank, the smoker, witch and perhaps another special infected somewhere, just there, in an awesome movie. Here's something else you may not have known:
