I just watched Stake Land on Netflix. If you are looking for a well made B Horror movie like they used to make before horror porn movies came in on the scene, you could do a lot worse.  One of the best horror film I've see this year, with The Cabin in the Woods sweeping the horror awards.

Stake Land is a terrible name for a really solid, watchable movie. Top notch quality throughout. Acting, Writing, Motion Photography. Has a bit of the Walking Dead vibe but the zombies in Stake Land are a zombie/vampire hybrid. Which means they have vampire power to go with the whole zombie eating brains thing. They are much scarier than just a plain old zombies. It moves along at a perfect clip, not too slow, and doesn't get bogged down in meandering dialogue or self-indulgent plot crap. Like The Game of Thrones, no character is exempt from a terrible, bloody, tragic death. Like The Road, the setting is apocalyptic US, in this case after the vampire infection spreads.  Powerful movie, I thought.

I might even watch it again.  It's sleeper-good B horror movie, the kind you look for on Netflix and never find. Well, this is it.

Thanks for the recommendation, Scout. I'm always looking fora good horror or sci film and there are so many bad ones out there. My library system has it, so I'll put in a hold. I liked the Norwegian one you recommended earlier.

Sounds delightful, Scout. You are my go-to guy for films I'd never otherwise know about. Thanks!

I caught Stakeland on cable several months back and really liked it too.  In fact, I recommended it to a few people at work who watch those types of movies.  It gave me a 'The Road' vibe also with the look and atmosphere, and the vampire/zombies were indeed scary.  My most recent Netflix movie that I liked was Promethius.  So many people said 'meh' to that movie, I guess my anticipation was low, but I definitely enjoyed all 2 hours of it.   My next movie to come is 'Bait', a novel take on the shark attack movie motif.  At least, that's what feedback I've read on it says.  Maybe it was even mentioned at this site?

Thanks for the recommendation Scout. I watched Cabin for the second time only the other night. An awesome film.

lakerz, you probably rented it by now but here's a link. I thought I recognised Bait from somewhere... ;-)

Edit: Pokey, a few sci-fi and horror recommendations from me and my better half:

  • Moon
  • District 9 is worth a look, though I didn't like it quite as much as most
  • Another Earth
  • Moon
  • Melancholia (odd but compelling)
  • Source Code
  • Moon (I love Moon)
  • Shutter (the Japanese version)
  • Troll Hunter
  • Moon
  • Julia's Eyes

That should do it for now.

Gregg, that's an interesting list. I guess you liked Moon. I did too. I loved Troll Hunter too. I've seen several of those, but Melancholia, Julia's Eyes, Source Code and possibly Shutter are ones I need to look up.

I saw District 9 in the theatre - went without knowing anything about it all - and loved it! Troll Hunter is a riot. I'll have to check out the others on Gregg's list... Like Moon!

Also check out The Host, a South Korean monster movie made in 2006. There is a US movie of the same name coming out sometime next year so use your google fu wisely.

I remember watching The Host many years ago but don't actually remember an awful lot about it.

And it turns out Shutter was a Thai film, not Japanese. An excellent film though alongside the likes of Ring, Ju-On: The Grudge, Dark Water and A Tale of Two Sisters.

I don't get the fascination with The Ring, Ju-on or Dark Water. I've seen all three and none of them rocked my world... although Dark Water was more interesting than the other two. (And yes, I saw the original versions not the US releases, which are usually horrible)

Haha, I was enjoying Ring until my friend destroyed the atmosphere by shouting 'KILLINGS' in a silly voice just as the lady makes her appearance. The Grudge had some really hairy moments but didn't quite hold together as well as Dark Water for me (the bed scene really gave me the willies though). Tale of Two Sisters and Shutter are 'similar' films but I remember them both giving me some brilliant scares, which is quite rare these days. Julia's Eyes is a... Spanish film, I think, and it plays around with all sorts of neat horror devices. It's got its flaws but I found it really entertaining and creepy.

Don't forget "Monsters," which I saw on Gregg's recommendation. Not a horror film really, but very very good.

I just saw Iron Sky - the one that had the trailer last year? Moon Nazis? It's now available at all your usual places.

See it. See it now. It's freaking hilarious.

Since we're talking horror are there any fans of The Devil's Backbone? It's not exactly a b-movie but it's low budget and one of the creepiest things I've ever watched. I know it's not Guillermo Del Toro's first film, but it's probably the first that brought him much attention. Good stuff.

Oh, I loved moon too. Kevin Spacey should only play robots from now on.

Count me as a fan of Devil's Backbone!  I also really like it's companion film, Pan's Labyrinth.

I think he is referring to the English version of Guillermo's name.

Yes, Bill is English for Guillermo. Actually it would be William.  That quote was from the opening of The Devil's Backbone.

And Pan's Labyrinth, I utterly adored.

Yeah, The Devil's Backbone and Pan's Labyrinth are excellent films. The Orphanage is worth checking out too. I think Billermo was the executive producer for that. Either way, it's very reminiscent of his work.
