Yes, it's me.
And I've tracked you all down.
But guess what... you won't have to listen to my mindless jabbering this time because I have an actual question for y'all.
I have not even seen or toyed with a Vista computer at Costco.
SO... I ask you this.
Is it true that Windows 7 (forget about the Vista thing... I figure why not skip it) has stolen a whole lot from Mac and is actually rather nice?
My daughter just shelled out the amazingly low price for Windows 7 at a good bit over $200.
I want to build my better half a computer that will just suit her particular needs (for example, she doesn't exactly need a state of the art graphics card to run her screen saver), so I was hoping to get her just an XP Pro. (For less than $200.)
Anyhow... nice to see you all! (Can't wait until I can get my old avatar on here!)[Image Can Not Be Found]

Wow! Good to see you Raj. Been a long time. Hope you are well and that you come back often. Your quirky fits TR quirky quite well.
I have XP Pro running on the PC side of my Intel iMac. I wouldn't touch Vista with a 10ft. pole, but people I know who have gone to Windows 7 say it's much, much better than Vista. Will Windows 7 ever be able to steal anything from Apple? I don't think so. I only have XP installed on a partition to play games. Everything else gets done on the Mac side. Macs just work. That said, much money can be saved by going the PC route. Microsoft will be supporting XP for a few more years, so if you make that choice you won't go wrong - especially if state-of-the-art isn't necessary.
"…you just keep on trying 'til you run out of cake."
Oh my God, Raj, welcome back! It's been ages!
To answer your question: I am really enjoying Windows 7, and it is very Mac-ish and nice, but I wouldn't call it a necessary upgrade for a user who just wants to visit the web, write emails, and do basic office activities. Under those circumstances it seems to me that Windows XP would be fine, provided you use a program like Norton (much improved these days) to patch up its security holes.

HEY SPIKE!!
Wow it's goiing to be fun to hook up with old buddies like you![Image Can Not Be Found]
Thanks for the advice on the operating systems. I once had a Mac at the office and a laptop pc I took back and forth (with a program to make them compatible). I think PC people have some kind of brain defect that makes it really hard to switch to Mac. On the other hand, Mac people seem to do fine dealing with PCs when they have to.
Just an observation from one who doesn't observe much.
But your advice is sound and very appreciated. And... I LOVE YOUR SIGNATURE!!
(Incidently... hey, I was thirsty.)

Hey Steerpike... I found you! I found you!
With help from Scout and Jen.
Thanks for the advice. Seems like it points the way to go.
And thanks for taking up the banner.
Y'all have created a GREAT site here.[Image Can Not Be Found]
Wonderful stuff.
Cutting edge.
I just gotta watch it because I'm so far behind I usually get cut.[Image Can Not Be Found]
Hey though, man, I hope you're around forever more!

Jen's more than earned her retirement... I only hope MrLipid and I are able to do half the justice to the place that she did. We'd still be under the old banner, actually, but we had a bit of a run-in with some hackers and a domain/name change seemed like a chance to get away from them while expanding all the good stuff we cover. It's great to have you back!
