Hey guys, local idiot here.
So I've got my PC running on a lovely monitor displaying at 1920x1080 (FULL HI DEFONISHIONZ), but I have some problems with window sizing. I have a preference as to how large and how small I want certain windows to be. For example I like to have Chrome centralised but with a nice gap on either side so I can still see my desktop, and I like my Steam chat windows to be a little larger than they are by default. Whenever I boot up my system I resize my windows to my hearts desires, but whenever I switch off my system or even just my monitor, as soon as I come back to use the PC the windows have often shrunk back to their original or sometimes even more baffling sizes.
Is there something I'm doing wrong, or something I can set at OS level to keep my windows the size I want them? This has never been a problem for me on OS X (COUGH FUCKING COUGH, Ahem bleeurgh.. just clearing my throat) but is a MASSIVE issue on Windows 7 that is RUINING MY LIFE.
Thanks friends, writing buddies and Gregg in advance.

My windows always come back to the same size I left them at, but they are not always in the same position on the screen. Also, frequently when I run a low-res software on my high-res monitor(s), my other windows will resize themselves to fit the low res, which is really annoying. I don't think there's any way around it. Apple really has the whole windows concept aced, whereas Microsquishy does not. On the whole, though, I absolutely love Windows 7. It has very little that annoys.

Absolutely. I've been pleasantly surprised since returning to Windows how little the OS has bugged me. It looks nice and so far, touch wood, works alright for me.
Just.. this window size thing. That's the only thing that's grinding my gears.
This must be a setting, somewhere... there are settings to retain folder view modes, there has to be one to retain application window sizes. In general - aside from Adobe products, because Adobe is evil and I hope they die - my Windows 7 windows open at whatever size they were closed at.
Even turning your monitor off and on does this? That sounds like a display setting of some sort, like it's swapping resolutions as you turn it on (which resizes windows, as Jen said), and then fixing on the right one or something.
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
Here's a Windows 7 forum thread specifically devoted to this issue! 😉
Hey Mat, I've been looking into this and it seems you've got a few options.
Firstly there's Windows Manager, which will cost ya'!
Secondly there's ZMover, which will cost ya'! (although this would be my preference from what I've read)
And thirdly there's ShellFolderFix, which is free but won't control the size and position of application windows like Chrome and Steam etc. (check out the above)
