Below is a link to an article in Fast Company about the resurgent demand for ugly Christmas sweaters and a company that enables those wanting such. Do other religions do this sort of thing? Are there ugly Hanukkah hats? Ugly Hindu sashes? Ugly Bahai sandals? I ask this as a person who has never owned one single piece of holiday-themed clothing or jewelry of any kind. Not Christmas. Not the Fourth of July. Not Halloween. Not even for National Maritime Day (May 22).

And THIS guy. How hot is he in his holiday finery? I So hope nobody here knows him.

It's the leather pants that set off that sweater so well. Damn, that's an ugly sweater.
I've been known to wear holiday-themed earrings and maybe a hat (Mardi Gras and Christmas only with regards to hats). If anyone gave me such a nasty sweater I'd know that they hated me. [Image Can Not Be Found]

It's just another trend. They come and they go. A friend was complaining just last night that they are having Ugly Sweater Day where she works and everyone is buying ugly sweaters and giving her shit because she doesn't want to waste her money on something like that.
Next year it will be evil garden gnomes. You heard it here first.
Yeah, it's the leather pants that truly complete the look for that guy.
I've never owned an ugly holiday sweater. I dislike sweaters because I don't like being warm. However, in the spirit of the season, last year I did buy some Old Navy flannel pajama bottoms with reindeer on them.
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
My agent in the gay bars of Milan reports that Lucky Charms cutout non-skip footed leather mock-turtleneck onesies are the hot thing. Skip corrective eye surgery until 2012, 2013 to be safe.
Sorry Steerpike: you'll heal up smack on the holiday when the trend trickles to US local evening news and mall kiosks in "relaxed fit" form factors. You're screwed.

Armand's right, it's a hipster thing. I can pick every single person on the streetcar who will get off at Queen St West (hipsterville of Toronto) ... anyone wearing ridiculous pants, wigs, coloured hair, terrible jacket, ugly sweater... they all come from the same place. It's some thing about early '90s fashion irony.
The irony in that is that far from now there won't be an identifying fashion feature of the '00s other than the hyper self-awareness/self-consciousness that comes with mocking other decades of fashion. The 2000s: Art Decade. Or decayed? Hmm.
If being wrong's a crime I'm serving forever
This is for you xtal. I sent it to Armand the other day when we got talking about hipsters.
You guys could try having Christmas in summer... then there'd be less sweaters (jumpers) if nothing else. Trade them in for short shorts and singlets, thongs (the feet kind), and a stubbie.

A stubbie is just another word for a beer… usually in the shorter-necked glass bottles, but probably interchangable with all beer types now (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Beer_bottle).
A group of men standing around a BBQ, all with what you two fear I meant, would not be a very merry Christmas at all.

What a relief! Thanks, Jarrod. I thought I'd be starting the new year off with the image of that guy at the top of this topic, sans-pants, burned into my eyeballs. It would have taken the whole year for them to heal. So a stubbie is actually a good thing. (not that size matters, of course) [Image Can Not Be Found]
Sorry if I got you worried for nothing, Toger.
