I should have been posting this bite-sized news yesterday, but I’ve been feeling under the weather lately (I blame Steerpike and his relentless beatings). So I’m posting it now, instead. Forbes Magazine in February’s issue have revealed that Steam controls up to 70% of the $4 billion market for downloaded PC games, with a staggering 200% year-over-year growth. Although Valve have never revealed their turnover or profit margins, its fair to say that their profit will undoubtedly …
A question I’ve been mulling over for years now, is why is there not a Pokémon MMOG? It’s startlingly obvious and has genuinely remained on my mind for far too many hours lately. Considering Pokémon has sold in excess of 100 million units world wide, since the launch of Pokémon Red and Blue, I am stunned it isn’t already in production (although it should be noted Nintendo have squashed some fan attempts). What is even …
It wouldn’t be sensationalist to state that RIFT is the most polished and accomplished MMOG BETA I have ever taken part in. And while not fault free, the single problem I did encounter (being unable to login due to queueing issues), was when servers first opened; a problem undoubtedly linked to the sheer quantity of people flooding on-line. The rest of my evening however, was flawless.
I’ve started to utilise the Auction House for the first time in my MMOG history. I’ve always adopted trade skills in any MMOG, to their maximum ability, yet have never actually used it to weigh down my pockets with gold, only to ever benefit myself in the form of potions (for personal use)…
Shame on me. I finally succumbed to purchasing my first Team Fortress 2 item several weeks ago. I justified the transaction by wanting to pad out my Steam wallet with £10 so I could buy A.I. War, while still having enough change left to get my grubby mitts on a vanity item of my choosing. Having sunk hundreds of hours into TF2, absorbing its free content like a sponge in water, I told myself it’s …
It’s difficult to know where to even begin when covering World of Warcraft’s latest expansion set. The game is already so vast as a result of its unprecedented success that to add further content becomes a daunting prospect for anyone wanting to jump in… (warning – may contain spoilers)
There really isn’t much to say on this news piece, besides Eurogamer scoring Just Dance 2 8/10 in their recent review. I’ve spent months trolling the original game, only to find the sequel isn’t half bad. I’m actually in shock. You can find the review here. Read it and weep (I know I am) Email the author of this post at lewisb@tap-repeatedly.com
If you haven’t been following the latest news from the Team Fortress 2 (TF2) blog, you might not be aware of Valve’s latest venture into micro-transactions. Coinciding with the release of the Steam Wallet, Valve have finally released the Poly Count community winners into the game (also known as ‘The Man-conomy update’). These item sets (alongside every other weapon and hat in the game) can now be purchased, while wearing full item sets grants the …
Irrational Games has kindly sent TAP the first in-game footage of Bioshock: Infinite previously shown at Gamescom. Instead of compressing a 10gb video however, I thought it might be easier to send you in the direction of GameTrailers.com who have the footage all ready and waiting (it’s what they do best after all). I managed to watch 30 seconds before shouting to myself “DON’T SPOIL IT!!“. Enjoy! Email the author of this post at lewisb@tap-repeatedly.com
Hype is a dangerous commodity within online communities. It is sought, and disliked in equal measure. Like an addict, there are the highs before the lows. The slow, steady realisation that the rolling stone of excitement may, more often than not, find itself brought to a halt by an immovable object, known as reality. To ride the wave of hype is a publisher and developer dream. A free underbelly of excitement that ripples through forums …
The weekly sales chart is in, and it’s no surprise to find Halo: Reach dominating. Storming straight into poll position after selling twenty five billion copies in one evening, and generating enough profit to setup Master Chief for life (he’ll be grateful for the retirement and so will we). What did surprise me however (and you’ll all love this) is that Just Dance is still in the top 20 after 947 weeks*. Hang on while I smash something. …
To follow on from where Gregg left off with with his fantastic review, Team 17 have finally announced a launch date for Alien Breed 2: Assault, which is set to launch on Steam and XBLA on Wednesday 22nd September. The second chapter in the Alien Breed series finds the player taking control of Conrad, Chief Engineer aboard the dying ship Leopold, and continuing his fight for survival across the fatally damaged space vessel. In addition …
In a shameless attempt to drum up extra business at the expense of APB, now that the plug has been officially pulled, Hi-Rez Studios, the creators of Global Agenda, have sent out an open letter to all Shooter/MMO fans.
Review by Lewis B Warhammer Online Developer Mythic Entertainment Publisher EA Released July 2009 Available for PC Time Played: over 150 hours. Verdict: 3/5 Middlin’ “Warhammer Online still has promise, but the licence is tragically underused. Mythic has tried to emulate World of Warcraft in so many ways they have lost their identity and reputation in the process. Despite innovation, Warhammer Online falls far short of what could have been something truly special.”
Rock, Paper, Shotgun beat me to this story, but our friend Bobby Kotick (the man we all love here at Tap), has been delivering speeches at the (Bank of America) Merrill Lynch Media, Communications & Entertainment Conference in California. Evidently not happy enough with the gazllions of pounds Activision already makes, he’s now touting the idea to sell pre-rendered cut-scenes to fans as feature length videogame cinematics…
