Jarrod, Assassin's Creed 2 is a far better game than its predecessor (there's actually a game in it!) It may take you some time to figure out what went on in the original, but there's nothing that will overwhelm you. I think you'll enjoy it a lot, and it will be a nice variant to Borderlands.

So Mat, what's the verdict on the 3DS? Talk to us.

I liked the first AC! It was a game! Never got around to playing the second because of Ubisoft's DRM.

Without knowing the story of the first AC, I'm kinda piecing together the second.  I had heard that it was based on a simulation, which I think is a great idea for the game - guilt free slaying and dying and stealing [Image Can Not Be Found]  So far it seems very polished indeed, and the aspect I thought I would hate the most about the game (the movement and platforming) turns out to be pretty simplicity itself (even if I occasionally leap backwards off the building and kill myself).  I thought it would be extremely tedious timing jumps to land on posts etc, but the game does all of the hard work for you, which is a real treat.

Actually, the game really reminds me of the old Hitman games and the joy I had with those.

Does the PS3 have DRM on it?  I'm not sure if I've played it not being connected.

I think Armand is talking about the PC version, Jarrod.

Armand, good sir: do yourself a favour and forget everything you know about AC1; just play AC2 (that is, if you are not vehemently opposed to the DRM situation and will absolutely not buy Ubisoft titles). It's better in every way conceivable. That includes the story, which was nonsensical at worst, foggy at best in Assassin's Creed.

I'm very excited to find out when and where the third protagonist's adventures will take place. Virtual Italy was gorgeous, much improved over virtual Jerusalem and Acre.

Sorry Jarrod, I was indeed talking about the PC version. Didn't mean to cause confusion.

I'll pick up the second AC on a good Steam sale sooner or later. The DRM was scaled back on it, but the whole thing left a very bad impression of Ubisoft for me. I even get upset when I buy a game not knowing it was by Ubisoft nowadays, and then find out on the load screen when their logo flashes.

I'll second xtal in saying it look gorgeous - the city and people look great.  The main character's movements are nice and fluid as well, so the whole game so far presents well.

Steerpike, or any other L4D players for that matter, drop me a line if you play the game on X360! (tag: xtal84)

I'm always looking to play some co-op with people who aren't 12-year-olds on Xbox Live for 15+ hrs a day.

Also on the Xbox 360 I am casually replaying Mass Effect a fourth time, switching back and forth between NHL '09 (it's playoff season!) and Viva Pinata too. On PS2 I am slowly but surely (and painfully!) taking down colossi one by one in Shadow of the Colossus. True story: I had next to no knowledge of SotC (I'd played it at a friend's house for ten minutes one time) and I had no interest in owning a PlayStation 2. I later read Steerpike's review and immediately went out to purchase a PS2 and SotC.

On the computin' box I've been very casually taking turns at the addictive Audiosurf and the adorable World of Goo. I also try to sneak in an hour of Call of Duty 4 every week with friends. Last but not least, my main quest on the PC as of late--probably much to the shock and horror of longtime FFC residents-- is The Longest Journey. Yes, I have never played it until this year. I'm finally starting to devote 30-90 minutes an evening to the grand adventure and I've just shifted into Arcadia for the first time. Excitement!!

I decided to look back at the early pages of this topic ... see what everyone was playing 2 years ago when the site re-opened. Turns out I'm still playing the same games. [Image Can Not Be Found]
I did not finish Left 4 Dead (sold it) or World of Goo (I'm not very good at it), I still haven't progressed too far in The Longest Journey, and Shadow of the Colossus ... well, I'm still savouring that game because when it ends I've got no more Team Ico goodness to enjoy for the first time; and I don't expect to see The Last Guardian for a looooooooong time. I actually played SotC yesterday for the first time in a few months; I took down the seventh and eighth colossi.
I'm still impressed with your review, Steerpike, because I cannot find any words at all to describe such an experience.

I started Haf-Life 1 last weekend.  I almost started HL2, but decided I should maybe begin at the beginning.   Played about 90 minutes or so - long enough to get past the explosion.  I didn't play again until last night.  Tonight I go swimming.  So far this game is kinda easy.  Early enemies have been easy to dispatch with the crowbar or pistol.  Upside:  I CAN RUN!   Downside:  I know that this is a very well-regarded game, but I don't usually like going back in time with games - I've only ever replayed 1 game to see if it held up (not too badly).  I so love modern graphics.

Dragon Age 2.

All I'll say at this point: Qunari self-immolation. [Image Can Not Be Found] and foreshadowing of allowing only one mage to tap heavily into elemental magic leading to serious regret (and possible death) on my part.

I just finished Splinter Cell Conviction. I thought it was a bit hard in places, but I was somehow able to find a way to advance. My current game is Amnesia, which is scary, but so far not the quivering in a corner type of terror, as in System Shock 2.  Much better than I expected and better than Penumbra. It shouldn't take long to complete and then I am looking at Batman Arkham Asylum.

Just picked up Armored Core 4, thanks to Jakkar's discussion and the price being right.  I've adjusted my Mech, I just have to figure out what all of the stats mean for each part I've attached!

Now playing "Don't Take It Personally, Babe - It's Just Not Your Story".  I'd guess I might be around half-way through now...  but I'm wondering what would have changed if I'd branched off with different decisions to the ones I'd made...

My husband and I are playing Uncharted 2 and just got past the area with all the cogwheels. Good golly, was that tense! [Image Can Not Be Found]

We are really enjoying the game and expect to play Uncharted 3 when it comes out.

It has many great setpiece moments like that, Pokey. I loved Uncharted 2 and I'm planning to grab part three the instant it's out.

The writing and acting are perfection, and the game itself is really white-knuckled without turning into something overbearing. Glad you're enjoying it!

This has nothing to do with what I'm playing, I just want to say that I'm joining the current trend of quoting GLaDOS in forum signatures.

Well, that and I'm going to start Portal 2 again after leaving it alone for a week. Because I felt like it?

How many times have the lot of you finished it already? I finished Portal about 3 or 4 times... it is perfect, but Steerpike, 10 times really? Whatever floats your boat, sir. I suspect Portal 2 will get 1-2 playthroughs from me in the first year.

You were first, Spike. Steerpike copied you. I copied you both.

And I haven't finished the main component of Portal 2 yet. Armand said co-op is maybe even better played before the single player; another person said to me it would absolutely ruin the single player with spoilers spoilers.
