Hi folks,

I thought I would pass along this link:

http://store.steampowered.com/.....ly-holiday

Steam seems to be having a sale for the American long weekend; a different set of games each day at greatly discounted prices. Personal grudges toward Steam aside, it looks like they have some good deals.

A few from today:

Osmos - $2.00 (80% off)

Dragon Age - $37.49 (25% off)

Batman: Arkham Asylum - $24.99 (50% off)

GRiD - $7.49 (75% off)

The price for DA:O seems to be awfully low so early in the shelf life cycle? If you don't like Steam, D2D has a 20% (vs 25%) sale on the very same title. One uppance?

Hmm,

That price for Dragon Age just might push me off the fence.

Also remember, purchasing through steam there is no tax or any other type of service fee, so Dragon Age, for example, really is (well, was now) $37.49.

Today's deals include Knights of the Old Republic for an insane $2.49. If you never played it when it came out, this is a fine opportunity to do so for about the price of a Starbucks tall latte.

I had opposition to Steam for a while but it's dissipated now. Steam means well and won't hurt you. I depend on it for many games, so if you're on the fence, please feel safe ordering from the service.

I have a petty opposition to Knights of the Old Republic. It bothers me substantially that technology and architectural aesthetics  seems to have basically plateaued in the Star Wars Universe for over 4000 years. Nevertheless, I'll look past that for 2.49. Sheesh.

This sale could really poop out my wallet, though I can't think of anything off the top of my head on Steam that I really want.

I grabbed a copy at $2.49 myself, even though I own it. Just seems fair at that price. I greatly loved KOTOR; look forward to checking it out again. 🙂

Some last day excerpts:

Evil Genius – $2.49

The Secret of Monkey Island: Special Edition – $2.49

Section 8 – $24.99

Mirror's Edge – $5.00

I see Mirror's Edge got a 3/5 middlin' score from Steerpike. Do you think the game is at least worth experiencing at such a bargain? On one hand, it's very cheap, but on the other that $5 could go toward a likely better game that I've never played, such as Stalker.

I bought Chronicles of Riddick today for ten bucks. I had wanted to play that when it came out (the original not the poorly received add on that they're selling now) but my computer wasn't competent at the time. For some reason it's been taking forever to download.

I bought Batman on Friday and finished it today (with all of the Riddler's thingies solved). I loved it to death, except I started to get really bothered by what I thought was a persistent and completely unnecessary misogyny in the antagonists. Not even in Grand Theft Auto has the epithet "bitch" been so universally applied to the females in a game.

I hate to keep bumping my own thread... I feel like a pimp, but I thought this was worth it for anyone who crosses by here in the next hour.

direct2drive has Mass Effect on sale right now for $4.95. The sale is over in about an hour and a half. This is an insanely good steal for such a quality product...the only thing being that you need a pretty beefy computer to handle the game well.

If you do (we're talking a computer that can run Crysis smoothly) it is well worth it.

(Okay, I'm done posting this stuff!! I promise!)

Big sale on at Steam till January 3. http://store.steampowered.com/

Stalker for $2 !

lokimotive, how's Chronicles of Riddick ? I've been interested in that for a long time too. I never played the first one and this seems like a good time to get them both.

Helmut,  where on their site did you see Stalker for $2?  I see the original for $9.99 (pretty cheap) and Clear Sky for $4.99, but no $2 deal.

Might there be a US/Canada difference?

Yes, there might. Steam says price can vary by region.

I picked up some adventures that I'm willing to let be horrible at the much-reduced pricing: Ankh 2 & 3 and Runaway: Something about Turtles (or words to that effect) for the paltry sum of $12!!. Of course, it took forever to buy them because I couldn't remember the password to my Steam account. Trying to reset the password caused much cussing/swearing on my part. Now, I'm not entirely sure which password is the correct one.  [Image Can Not Be Found] [Image Can Not Be Found]

You're right Spike, my error. I must have been feeling the after effects of the night's nog. I feel for the Europeans... The price of those games is the same in Euro's as US$. I got dinged $57Cad for Far Cry 2 because I didn't pay attention to conversion rates. Possibly the worst fun-value rating in history.

I worry about transferring my Steam games from one system to another. Has anyone done this type of thing and lived to tell of it?

It's not a problem, Helmut – just install the Steam client and download the game. The only restriction, I believe, is that you can't be playing the same game on two machines simultaneously, though I'm not even sure about that. Steam is very easy to deal with.

This holiday sale is physically hurting me. Physically. I've already bought Gratuitous Space Battles, Torchlight, The Void, AI War, and The Witcher. And it's only, like, day four.

Damnit… I already spent too much money on games this year. But… since this is my only chance to actually own a  legit (albeit intangible) copy of The Void, I believe some abuse of my wife's credit card is in order. Steam, goddamn you, here I come!!!

Edit: Bought it!!! Measly ten euro at that!!!! I mean, it's a CRIME not to have this game, a CRIME I say!!!

You broke Steerpike, you bought them. YOU BOUGHT THEM ALL!!!

I keep threatening to drop my Steam shortcut in the recycle bin but those offers are so barmy that they're worth looking at just for the entertainment value never mind actually parting with money for them! I've only bought AI War for myself and Braid for a friend from Steam but ended up getting The Longest Journey and Sanitarium off Gog.com and bought the Penumbra collection for my brother off Frictional Games' online store (cheaper than Steam!!).

Any thoughts on The Void while it's ripe? Torchlight was tempting but I'm not sure I could stomach that much dungeon crawling.

I almost jumped on Torchlight while it was $5, but couldn't bring myself to pull the trigger even though it's a beloved Diablo-esque. Sanitarium is one of my all-time favorite adventures. I've got the original big-box, subject to exploding in fast spinning drives CDs. Mayhaps I should invest in a digital version...

Shit, I heard about the exploding discs thing over on the Adventure Gamers forum. Is that really true?

That's great to hear re: Sanitarium; it looks deliciously dark. I've been pining for something like that since Planescape: Torment's bleak story haunted me.
