The PS4 as announced recently is looking good compared to the new XBox. The only thing that has me concerned is the online multiplayer. It seems you will now have to have a subscription to PS+ in order to play. I would never have made it through Dark Souls without a bit of help and I enjoyed helping others. I assume I could no longer do that with the PS4, but is that also going to apply to the PS3? I assume it is and wonder when it will happen. I don't play enough games to make a sub to PS+ worth the cost.

I'm guessing that'll just be a PS4 thing, it'd be really weird to roll that out across their current gen console at this point in time. I'm also guessing that it would have got a lot more coverage if it had been announced or even suggested anywhere. I think you'll be fine Pokey!

They slipped it into the conference quite cleverly last night. From my memory, it went about like this:

"USED GAMES, NO MANDATORY ONLINE, NO MANDATORY CAMERA STARING INTO YOUR EYES/SOUL, 100 BUCKS CHEAPER THAN EXBONE, Lulz, PEACE OUT"

*uproarious applause*

"btw our ps plus is rly good it's so good that you can play single player games without it oh no one can hear me? cool lates" * mic drop *

But no, Pokey, I seriously doubt that will be rolled out to PS3. When he said it on stage he strictly referred to PS4 by name. The decision is a sad point, but it's not unexpected when they've undercut Microsoft by $100, which no one thought they could do. I think Dark Souls 2 is still current-gen exclusive, but hopefully any future Souls games don't suffer because the more casual fan base can't afford the sub to get online. That would be terrible, frankly.

Thanks. I'm feeling better about the PS3 situation, though it is too bad about the PS4 and multiplayer. I hope Dark Souls 2 is current-gen exclusive.

Me too, Pokey. With the majority of Dark Souls 1 players being on PS3, and a large portion particularly from Europe where the PS4 is a lot more expensive when you convert the currency there, I think it would split the player base to the point of ruining the online experience; unless it worked cross platform, but we've seen no evidence to believe it would.

I'd be shocked if it were rolled out to PS3. For all the reasons the guys have already said, plus when Sony launched the PS3 it justified the high price (in part) by saying that the base level of its online service would always be free for the console. Unfortunately the decision to make any kind of multiplayer a costy add-in sort of hurts that (plus I bet we'll see a lot less free goodies on PS+ in the next generation), but they'd be crucified if they applied it to the current console.

Ah, clarification.

From GamesIndustry.biz:

Meanwhile, Sony has also confirmed via several executives that PSN will be a paid-for service on PS4. Speaking to AllThingsD, Jack Tretton explained that a subscription would be necessary for PS4 users, but not those on PS3 or Vita.

"You need to be a PlayStation Plus member on PS4 to play online multiplayer, yes," Tretton explained. "If you play offline, if you have a Netflix or a Hulu Plus subscription, you don't need to be a PlayStation Plus subscriber, but if you want to be an online multiplayer, you do need to be a member. That is different from PlayStation 3. On the PlayStation 3 presently and going forward, you don't need to be a Plus member to play online multiplayer."

Well, nothing beats 100% clarification. If only industry folk spoke like they do at E3 all year round!

Despite my general churlishness about this upcoming console generation, I can see myself getting a PS4 eventually.  The paid online doesn't bother me as much as I would have thought.  Maybe that's because PS+ already seems like such a great deal anyway.  That and the very important fact that there's no Netflix surcharge.

I don't know the details of how things work with PS3 and 360 now concerning server resources and who runs what, but if Sony charging for online means better and more reliable connections, that will really help their position.
