I thought someone here might find this interesting. The game is something like RTS meets Minecraft meets EVE Online...if that made any sense. Anyway, before massive servers with thousand(s?) of players, building structures and economy make it into the game, it currently looks rather like MOBA than anything else.
Another strange thing is, frequent changes of sex/class/race are likely - account is tied to crow-spirit, not the body/avatar. Also, you can play Tetris in there and, oh by the way, Raph Koster designs crafting 🙂 Open beta (free tests) is scheduled for this winter but players are already testing, say: siege with voxel destruction, noob girl playing with Centaurs and Ranger PvP.
PS If my incomprehensible intro didn't make any sense, IGN Wiki maybe will!?
He's no bot, I've seen him over at Qt3, specifically just now on the No Man's Sky thread 😉 How on earth did you end up in here?
No need for apologies, I perfectly understand the situation. And that "drag pencil into the circle" minigame is kinda cute 😉
Meantime, my beloved one was slaughtered on PC Gamer (in comments...and these on YouTube are even worse). It totally backfired, we even had the CEO admitting it publicly on forums. Le sigh...
I'm with you, Amanda. The initial trailer (back at VGX...2014?) had me as excited as anyone but I don't understand what you'll do in that game except explore infinite quasi procedurally-generated worlds, which doesn't sound that appealing to 2016 me. It would have to 1998 me.
What seems likely right now to me is that people who are skeptical may enjoy it the most, and the people who have put their hopes for the future of humanity on No Man's Sky may be a tad disappointed. I don't want it to be shit, make no mistake, but its hinted-at promises are lofty.
If being wrong's a crime I'm serving forever
It will almost certainly happen @xtal - due to it's backing, NMS is overhyped and will disappoint much more than it should. I mean, I see it as a fun game (even if not for me...) worth it's price, and that's it. And as you said, many already expect much, much more.
Edit: I'm running low on green tea, thus blindness. Thanks for the welcome(s)! =)
You guys are probably right about NMS, but I so want it to be the... the... you know, the... space game we dream of. Elite Dangerous had a lot going for it and may still win out; Star Citizen... we'll see. NMS, oh, I want to explore a varied universe and have varied adventures there.
But your worries are well-placed.
Meanwhile, back to this Crowfall of which JamesGoblinBot speaks of, that sounds frankly quite intriguing. RTS + Minecraft + Eve? Seems like a steep learning curve but I like the components!
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
Speaking of NMS, I have same kind of (too)high hopes for Crowfall, you are not alone.
Here's another silly one, Chronicles of Elyria - (very quick intro - medieval fantasy MMORPG with hierarchy, justice system, marriages/kids/aging/death/reincarnation through family and bloodlines plus paying some kind of "sub per life", plus couple more not-so-standard features) already has more than 70% of what they asked for on Kickstarter, with 25 days to go. In other words, they made it.
"Marriage...kids...death...and I have to pay for THAT??" Anyway, here is some very early footage.
I'm sort of fascinated by the phenomenon of hype surrounding games such as NMS. Seems often to be a combination of wishful thinking and willful ignorance. To be fair, I think many people would be happy just to have the ability to fly around a universe. And can I admit to being ever so slightly eager to see Star Citizen go spectacularly off the rails? C'mon, Derek Smart's reaction alone would be worth the price of admission.
Rule #2: Double-tap
I'm not much of an expert on MMOs, having only spent a very little time with them. Some friends and I did play a fair amount of The Secret World and enjoyed it quite a bit, but that game was easy to treat as if it weren't an MMO at all -- just a co-op game like Borderlands or whatever. Beyond that, short of a few hours in the Guild Wars II beta courtesy of Tap alumnus Lewis B, I don't know what's what.
What I've found is that I'm partial to massively multiplayer worlds that don't necessarily put any emphasis on the multiplayer part. Elite Dangerous, for example; Dark Souls to a certain extent; (hopefully) Star Citizen. Populating such games with people but still designing them as handcrafted experiences make them more appealing -- to me, at least -- than MMOs that emphasize the MO part.
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
I'm not a fan of SC (being 100% medieval fantasy freak), but it's failure would hurt indies/crowdfunding QUITE a bit. I wouldn't trade that for another Smart-comedy...thou I secretly like watching these =)
Speaking of MMOs, that's exactly where the market is moving - the reason why many see the genre as dying. For what it's worth, none of these you mentioned ( @Steerpike ) is an MMO in my book. The change is natural and very successful - some of new "MMOs" are 100% casual friendly and can be played as quite relaxed single player, mixed with occasional co-op at will.
