When you put it like that, I don't think I want your boots either 😛  Of course, you know that not all dragons breathe fire, right? [Image Can Not Be Found]

The best ways to harvest souls in this game I've found are to get a weapon that has a soul capturing spell on it. The kind that says "If you kill the bad guy X seconds after hitting them, you get their soul!" I then break that down at the enchanting table, and use it on EVERY WEAPON I EVER OWN after that. That way, everything I kill gets soul captured! If you want to have different buffs on your weapons, you can add the effect to your NPC companion's weapons, and give them a bunch of empty soul gems. Check in after a dungeon, and they should have a full set of souls for you to abuse.

Interesting how much like the massive Morrowind Bollocks thread (long lost in the blood fog of the great FFC hacker wars of yore) this one is becoming. Jarrod, I have read that there are frost dragons though the two I've encountered so far only breathe fire. If I can run and hide from them, I'm good with that though. Though I suppose there is a quest involving dragon bones to make armor on the horizon and I'll be chasing them willy-nilly soon enough.

Armand, I used to have a soul capturing weapon in MW. I remember summoning Golden Saints by the dozens and killing them for their souls with my soul capturing sword.

I really like that there are foes out there way over my level and ability to fight. It makes for a much more compelling experience to realize that that bear giving you the stink eye from the top of the hill could have you for lunch. Gothic 2 had that too and it made exploring quite thrilling. I see a lot of wandering around in my future in the game.

Is anyone crafting their own weapons and armor from scratch?

Also I chopped my first wood last night, after finding an axe and some wood in a bandit camp me and Lydia cleared out. I remember someone asking for firewood back in Whiterun.

Scout, I came across a frost breathing dragon last night... which seemed a little bigger than the others, but I've just hit lvl 30, so maybe they're tied to your level.  I don't know why bears are so tough - I'd prefer to take on the smaller dragons than polar bears.  The frost dragon was tough, I'd previously been killing 'blood' dragons.

Armand, I have a glass dagger that I've enchanted, for killing wolves and skeet-things, and filling up petty soul gems to get my Enchanting up.  It's at about 75 now.  I've taken a few Sneak Perks - if I backstab with a dagger now, it does 15X the damage.  Great for sucking up souls.

Finally got my Smithing up to 100, and made myself a lovely set of Dragonscale Armour (or Armor, if that makes you feel more at home).  I only wear the gauntlets and boots, though... my robes and mask are pretty awesome.  Making Dragonscale or Dragonplate is a 100 Smithing Perk.

I've just learnt how to summon a Frost Atronarch - far better than the Fire Atronarch, albeit with no ranged abilities.

I still suck immensely at melee combat - one guy I was fighting this morning would kill me with one swipe of his sword.  Very embarrasing.  I'm going to stop putting points into Magicka soon, and start putting some into Health.  I'm trying to find some armour that increases Health regeneration, so I can learn that ability and put it on my stuff.  I'm also searching for weapons that paralyse - if I can make two glass daggers with paralyse on them, I won't be so scared of engaging in melee combat.  I'll be able to stitch up my opponents nicely, and will pity the fools.  The highest level Enchating Perk allows you to place two enchanments on each of your stuff.  Double the stabby.  Double the fun.

I met a Draugr Deathlord in a dungeon this afternoon and I would like to lodge an official statement of I Do Not Like Those.

I'm jumping into the fray here... about 19 hours in, according to my save file. No crab paralysis yet so I've already put more time into Skyrim than I did Oblivion.

The setting is awesome. Snow, mountains, very pretty to gaze at.

Can any Elder Scrolls veterans give me tips on alchemy? I have so many ingredients but don't really know how to find proper concoctions. Someone in game told me to experiment, but doing that I'll probably just turn all my reagents into dust. I've discovered creating health potions (that was a gimme) and cure disease. Should I expect to find books of alchemists scattered around the lands, or is it time to rely on experimentation?

(I'm also playing on PS3, Jarrod. Hooray for us.)

I think it's mostly experimentation, xtal. Eat everything you find, and practice making easy potions. Both will improve your alchemy score and reveal new effects for ingredients.

"Eat everything you find" becomes less alluring when that list includes things like "troll fat" and "human heart," but hey.

Also, I think there's someone in Windhelm who can train you in alchemy. There are definitely teachers out there.

I think there is an Alchemy trainer in Whiterun as well.

As Steerpike says xtal, if you eat ingredients, you will learn one of four elements of the item. So eat one of each thing you pick up, and that will give you a nice intro to alchemy.

Hot damn, I didn't know that! What if I eat something four times, I don't suppose it reveals all its uses to me? 😛

In other news, I've turned into a werewolf. Pro: fully immune to disease. Con: I no longer gain rest bonuses from sleeping. I was already 50% immune to disease, being a wood elf. I am sad.

I'm trouncing around the mountains and I see my third dragon circling above ... gotta go!

Very minor spoiler xtal

You can undo the Werewolf effect later on if you want, just continue down the Companions quest line.

There are also recipes lying around, telling you what you need to make certain potions too.  I get a bit confused with them.

Killed the single-hardest mob I've come across, just this morning - I think it was a Dragon Priest.  Undead thing near a dragon, that summons other things.  If you're too close, you wake him and the dragon up at the same time, which is very difficult.  Fortunately, I have my Conjuration up to 100 now, and can summon a Dremora Lord... and my Alteration is high enough to Paralyze!  The Dremora Lord is worth his weight in gold, and is such a lovely fellow.  The Paralyze didn't work on the Dragon Priest, but my Destruction spells and Dremora worked him over, and I got my third mask off of him... and learnt some more Dragon Shouts.

The Dremora Lord is also excellent against Druagr Deathlords, and doesn't really care if the Shout at him.  Y'all should look at getting one.

The Paralyze certainly helps with Soul Trapping, too.  Oh, and I can permanently summon a Storm Atronarch!  Yay, no time liimit on him!  He is a bit big to keep out all of the time, and blunders into fights alot, especially when I'm Sneaking, but I do feel mighty if nothing else.

Just a tip to anyone tired of constantly having to manually save while out in the wilderness: quite often when you go to the pause menu to check your map or items the game will autosave. Just open it up every so often, might do the trick.

My companion has fallen 🙁

Uthgerd, no longer the Unbroken. And to a damned crazy elf living in a cave.

She was a great meat shield for a bow & arrow type that I am.

I visited the Graybeards at High Hrothgar. Interesting folk ... I think I'll take my time on the quest they've sent me. Scaling up that mountain was breathtaking I have to say.

I haven't visited the Greybeards yet, I've been off the beaten track for a while.  I wonder if there'll be less dragons after you see them?

Fought my first Elder Dragon this morning before work... blargh.... died about two thousand times before finally killing him.  Didn't really reward any great loot either [Image Can Not Be Found]  The Dremora Lord was rubbish against it.

Just started doing the quests to hopefully join the Thieves Guild, to get me some sneaky stabby action going.

Is there honour among this guild of thieves, Jarrod? I'm a sneaky type myself, but I'd rather not steal from folk. Unless it's dastardly uncaring rich folk and I'm an anti-thief ala Garrett.

Side note: I love the music in this game, but it seems like I hear the same stuff a lot. Not complaining, it's beautiful, it just doesn't seem that there is much variety. But gee golly what's there is pretty. I always take a reviewer's praise of a soundtrack with a grain of salt, because in probably 80% of reviews for any game I read said game has an apparently stupendous score. Most of the time the big in your face ones are just average, and barely at that. Usually it's the minimalist types that I enjoy; Skyrim finds a fair balance of majesty, thunder and serenity.

Also: dungeons. I'm only 30 hours into what will probably be a 200+ hour game for me, but each of the dungeons I've visited have been at least somewhat unique, in their placement and cleverness with traps, their puzzles and otherwise. It washes away the foul taste that Mass Effect's side missions left.

I  am in also. As usual quite a bit behind others.   But that is always an advantage since I learn so much from what others post.

Downloaded from Steam after it came out and did nothing but take a short look at the very beginning.  Then after reading responses to Amada's Initial Reactions and then this thread today, finally got a real start an hour ago.

I think I am going to like this game and I am hoping it is a very big game.  And it sounds like it is.

I am not a marathon sessions game player.  I am happiest playing open universe games (?term?) games that I can play off and on a few hours a day for months.   I like to sink into a game where I can really explore. Go new places, meet new people and slowly figure out what is going on and how I can develop my character.

I think this is going to be one of these game.  Hope so.

Kay, if you pace yourself, which it seems you do, Skyrim could probably last you a year. And I mean one play-through.

xtal: The dungeons are all unique to some degree. They may recycle graphical resources (and no one expects 200+ entirely different dungeons), but each one is hand crafted by a team of 12 full time dungeon makers, with their own mini plots and events. It never gets old!

Also, as to the music. I always listen to in-game music for the first few hours of gaming, then switch to my own music. Somehow, with this game, I've kept listening to the soundtrack. It's a bit repetitive, but they way they bring in each track at just the right moment makes it all feel really epic!

I wrote an article at BnB yesterday that's been really popular you guys might enjoy. It's a ton of the little details one can easily miss in Skyrim. Check out the comments as well as people have added more to it! Plus, you can see some of my screenshots!
