I finally decided to try out one of those skeleton summon scrolls the teach had for sale. What fun. Instead of disappearing after 60 seconds the skeleton, named Fred in combat so you don't attack him, will follow you around and is a great diversion, allowing you to take on mobs while they pile on Fred you can chip away from then at the back. I took him back to a couple of places that had ghouls and together we quickly dispatched them.

Am heading for the east coast, the last area I haven't thoroughly explored and the locations of some heavy action no doubt. My new buddy Fred will hopefully be right by my side. Also it works to fast save and fast load next to hiim if his health bar is low and that will heal him compleletly. I'm not too worriede as I just got my summon skeleton Rune and am off tom make more scrolls as back up. With fireball getting stronger and Fred taking the aggro from the mobs combat is flowling a lot smoother now and I'm leveling up much faster.

Make good use of Fred early in the game because he goes down very fast against stronger opponents later on. I wish I had used him more when he was effective. I found the ashbeast scroll to be very effective later on but didn't use it near the end of the game. I was hoarding them for the perfect time and of course still had several at the end.

I found my first ashbeast up on the east coast but so far haven't confronted it. Fred is working out pretty well and I think I have him early enough that he'll be of some help, but  not so early I can't live without him. I liked how once I accidently triggered a half dozen wolves and was in their midst before I knew what was happening. Having Fred there to divert part of them was a life saver.

I just finished the quest Cyrus and maybe the Vassal rings. Need to check my inventory and see if I have them all or not. Amazing how much faster I'm leveling up now with some assisstence. We'll see what happenes once I go inside the Volcano. Right now I have to find a crystal to sacrifice and damn if I'm giving up my fire crystal. So it's back to the Monestary.  I also need some open lock scrolls as I am leaving a lot of locked chests in these towers after wiping everything out. Still in Chapter 2 at around level 17. The combat is about right right now, on easy. I got tired of playing on normal and clicked it down a notch. Much more entertaining now.

One thing this game is showing is how outdated my gaming PC is. Not sure I could even play dragon age on it as it bogs down with just Fred, my skeleton brother in arms when we are in battle. A full party in the middle of a big mob might just killl it.

Still in Chapter 2. I've hit dead ends in all the temple, hit those blue barriers and used up the two barrier busters [Image Can Not Be Found] I had in inventory. Have 3 of the golden discs out of the 5 and can't seem to progress any further. I think I need to study my quest logs and see where I'm stuck. I have about 9 teleport stones.

I've wandered around the island for a few hours now just trying to find some combat, picking the occasional plant. I'm trying not to go looking for hints yet though I read this thread and saw a quest with Patty and gravestones. The Patty quest is still open but there is no mention of gravestones and just the red dot where her tavern is on the quest map.

In the meantime, I'm looting all the chests I hadn't gotten around to. I have cleaned out the Monastery and most of the bandit camp. Next up is Harbor Town and the few houses scattered around the island. I'm starting to bog down, getting tired of grinding through the same old, same old and still in Chapter 2. Hopefully things will pickup soon. Meanwhile, I'm piling up the loot in preparation.

Scout, you can't do anything with the blue barriers till chap 4. There shouldn't be any where you find the disks. Do you have all the locations of the discs? I think they are listed in the journal. Which barrier scrolls did you use? The red ones? I assume you have the disc from Cyrus. Have you been in the Eastern temple looking for a disc? That one is a bit hard to find. Have you talked to Patty?

I can't get Patty to say anything. I can trade with her but that is it. I've been in all the temples marked on the world map and cleaned them out. I guess I need to start looking closer as I was sort of distracted fighting Elite Warriors and kiting for hours. I'll read the disc quest logs more closely and try and see what I am missing.

I just can't believe that I have killed every last thing non-human thing on the island but it feels like it. Well, the chickens are still around....and that cow in Harbor Town...

The temples are empty now until I can open the blue barriers. I'm guessing Chapter 3 starts when I give all 5 discs to the Inquisitor? And the volcano area opens up?

Scout, Patty is a long story/quest arc involving her less-than-nurturing Dad. Did you discover his house in Harbour City? Inside a map that you take to Patty? (I think that's how it progresses). She wants to blow this town but has no money. Seeing as Dad was a major pirate boss, he must of stashed some loot....somewhere. Thus the search for gravestones. Which leads to other stuff. Or so I can vaguely remember, I count on Pokey's memory to correct any errors. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Yes, five discs to the Inquisitor will open the volcano door.

I read that gamepressure.com now has a pdf guide (free to download after free registration). Even skimming the chapter index might provide non-spoilerish clues.

Yap, that's the Patty quest that is still open. Me and Patty talked about it for a while, then I did a quest with the Patty-dad-nemesis pirate out on the pier, turned his stuff over to the Order and Patty has no more to say. I think I obviously haven't scoured Harbor Town as thoroughly as I need to. I plan on looting it down to the last crumb of bread today so hopefully I'll find that elusive Patty's Dad pad then and get things rolling again. I do have the shack key for the quest in my inventory. I was thinking the shack might have been elsewhere on the island but I never did find anything.

You are talking about Romanov's casket, which you turned over to the Order? I did that early on. I think before I talked to Patty. I think I first talked to her when I got the quest for the disks. Balturo is listed in the log as a contact for Patty. Did you talk to him? When I first talked to Patty, I said that Balturo knew her. I believe the key to the shack is a reward for helping her out.

The shack is near the tavern. It is the door that didn't open earlier. Maybe near the fishmonger. I thought it was marked on the map. If you visit the shack, the quest should progress.

I found the shack whilst looting Harborville. I guess I had the key this time cause the door opened. I found the clue and I've got the Patty/disc/main quest progressing now. I sort of remember talking to Balturo once but I got so caught up clearing out temples I forgot to go back and look around town.

Quick update in case anyone is still reading...losing Pokey and Yap has taken the wind out of this thread...

I am at level 21, with 8 fireball and 6 sword (using both sword fighting rings I found in my inventory). I can use a bastard sword one-handed and a shield now which helps as the fireball is much slower than in gothic 3. Too late to switch to bullet and I sacrificed that crystal earlier anyway.

Just opened the gates using the 5 crystal discs (too many crystals  in this game). Chapter 3 just started and I'm apparently off to look for mechanisms to open the Big Gate. I think I need to start upping my Strength now which is only at 70. The fireball at 80% is probably good enough seeing as I can't really use it in up close combat anyway due to its long recharge time and the last 20% won't be that big of an advantage.

My inventory is bulging with plants so I think I need to go out and scout around for some more alchemy recipies. I have over 7 grand in gold and am also thinking I will need  a good stock of levitation scrolls as well. Oh and my torch supply is running low. I expect to find supplies inside the volcano but am not sure if I will get locked in at some point with no access to the island.

kay, are you still playing this game?

I'm still reading!

It was 'round about where you are (but much lower lvl than you as you de-mammalized the island [Image Can Not Be Found]) that I decided that frost was too crappy to keep. So I used Minsky to take back my points. Tried both fireball & bullets, bullets are fantastic: rat-a-tat-tat fast. But I still had my bullet crystal which you do not, maybe that can be re-created?

You will be able to exit the volcano, both Pokey & I did. But, be careful. There's stuff going on & ..(not sayin')... based on Pokey's experience, I grabbed the Scroll Guy (re-start a conversation) as soon as he stopped talking so I could buy what I needed. Always carry levitation & snail (what's the name?) scrolls, more levitation than snail.

I'm reading too. Keep posting. I enjoy hearing how another player did. Good advice from Yapette about having a supply of scrolls handy. You can teleport from any place, I believe, but you may have a long walk back. I doubt that the effect of fireball or the bullets is much different. Bullets are faster but do less damage. I often run backward or around objects when using the fireball. Occasionly, I'd find a spot where the enemy didn't seem to see me and blast till he was dead. The big axe at 84 or 96 D was pretty effective near the end. Your strength does seem a bit low for this part of the game. I was about 80 there and 132 at the end, level 25. I assume you have plants to use for that. I guess I didn't use the torch much since I had about 40 left at the end.

I used a lot of the permanent stat potions for Mana before I realized how limited the Hero's Crown plant was so I may be out of luck unless I wanna use the console. I have no problem with that but like to try out other stuff first. My actual strength is at 76 which feels low for this stage of the game. But my mana is pretty high and I can fling lots of fireballs if I see things soon enough.

I've had some edgy encounters with Lizard Warriors when in tight quarters or surprised and having to melee and I'm playing on Easy. I have discovered a sword combo that seems to be their weakness, attacking while side stepping using A or D. I just have to wait till after their second strike, then swing and sidestep then quickly throw up the shield. Much more effective than an overhead swat. That rarely does much damage. And the sidestep swing seems a little faster too and seems to place my shield in a good spot during follow through.

The fireball/Fred combo is pretty lethal though. I lose Fred a lot but hey, taking aggro is his job, not mine. I swear he grumbles, "asshole" everytime I resummon him in front of a couple of lizard men. I think I need to start running away a bit more instead of standing my ground. Those guys can HIT! Though turning and running if they are too close is usually not a good idea.

I still had 9 Hero's Crowns in reserve when I was at 80. I saw a map somewhere that showed all the Hero's Crowns, if you are interested. Your fighting technique sounds a lot fancier than mine.

I am still playing but I am way behind you Scout.

I got to the monestary  (a lovely place to be -- I even had my own room and I loved the little murder mystery and all the work to explore).

I have been sent out into the world (I am a mage) to find these magic discs for the boss guy.  I am making some progress.  So I am working at it.  But with me it is always slow since I didn't come to this kind of game until recently.

Now I will say what I think.    This would have been a great start of RPG for me.   The canvass of the game world is reasonable.  The number of things you can choose to be or to learn are reasonable.   After Morrowind and Oblivion this seems like a tiny world to learn and deal with.  But a managable world.  I can do this.

I am having fun with this game.   I have ordered the Gothic games to play.  They were cheap.   Maybe I will or maybe I won't.  But I am beginning to feel like I might become a real RPG game player.

To refer back to a previous post by Pokey,  I only recently began to see Hero Plants.  I didn't know they were special but I grab every plant I can.   I find it amazing to have this unlimited space in my inventory.   So much of my time in other games has been managing my inventory.   But it you can have everything,  there is a downside.   You can't remember what you have.

Kay -- still having fun with Risen.

Imagine life with no hypothetical situations.

Pokey, my fighting technique consists of mashing the A key while clicking the mouse madly.

I used the “goto”  command to find the rest of the Hero Crown plants. There were two, one above Rohbart's farm in an area I didn't even know existed and the other along a path I had been down two dozen times. Like kay, says, the inventory is so immense you don't even know what you have. I had both STR rings and didn't know it and had a bunch of Ogre Root for STR and didn't know iit either. I have my STR at 90. One more training session, then I'm gonna brew up what I have into potions and gobble the rest.

I stopped for the night after opening the Great Gate. I went back to the Monastery first and finished that quest.

I'm working on lowering the first big drawbridge just past the Great Gate. I've used a Nautilus scroll and gone through the hole in the wall Ethan/Vince chopped out. I went into a large chamber with a lot of Lizard Warriors everywhere and immediately went back through the hole while still a Nautius. I assume the mechanism is to the right in that large chamber. And from the previous posts, that I don't have to clear the entire chamber, esp. the area to the left before lowering the drawbridge? I'd rather not have to use up so many potions fighting all those Lizards in a large open area on my own. If I could even do it. I'd rather get the boys over that bridge to lend a hand here.

Scout, you are on the right track. That is a really tough area. It took me a while to get out of that first room with the nautilus hole. You don't have to clear the entire area like I did. When I finally found the winch in the last area I looked at, I was wishing I had looked there first. I could have lowered the bridge and had a lot of help. The only area I had left to clear was at Mendoza's gate. The winch is not that hard to get to. It is not in the big room to the right. That is where the drawbridge enters. Think central area.

Ah. So the winch is remotely located from the drawbridge?
