I am messing around on the Shivering Isles and liking it.  Contrasting Mania and Dementia is clever especially  since it was translated into how the two different parts looked.   The "difference in look" thing is one of my disappointments in Oblivions.  I had expected more creativity and variation.  Whoever designed the look of SI did a better job.

And I must say the night sky in Shivering Isles is one of the best night skies I have ever seen.    And, Helmut, I haven't yet caught the sun setting over the seas in Anvil but it is on my to do list.   I know some people call this stuff eye candy but it is one of the reasons that I end up really loving a game.

I can't keep Martin alive long enough for the third, Big Oblivion Gate to open outside Bruma. Let alone do what I must once I enter the gate. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I didn't close the gates at Leyawiin & Skingrad so I could do that to get two more soldiers.

I could level myself, think I'm ~ 13.

I could make a better npc healing spell but right now I end up targeting & healing the monsters. Any way to target in the pc version? Right now I do a piss-poor pitiful job.

Must we also directly ask Kvatch for help? Right now the game crashes after I talk to whateverhisnameis in Kvatch. My plan was to 1) wrap up the main quest thus closing all gates, 2) uninstall the mod limiting random gates, then 3) hopefully by doing #2, the installed mod Kvatch Rebuilt can be continued without crashing.

Anyone know @ what player level monsters & tasks jump up into a new level of difficulty? Like @ lvl 11, 21, 31 or lvl 15, 25, 35?

I'm bummed. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I can't give you clear advice, Yap.  I haven't yet started on the part of closing a new gate in Burma with Martin.  But I am level 17 and I closed every Oblivion Gate since I figure I will need a lot of help to protect Martin.  I am not that great a fighter.   I am more a stealth person and do best when I only have myself to worry about.  Kay

I moved.  I decided it was time to get out of the shack in the waterfront district and get a real home  So I added Knights of Nine and all that went with it.  And I have moved into my palacial digs -- Wizards Tower.  And I have spent a shit load of money to furnish it.  But it is a nice place.  I feel like I have moved up in the world.   I have spent a lot of time moving everything I own to my new place.  But it did make me decide to sell of a lot of stuff.  So I have so much money.

My major problem continues to be my strength.   I am now at level 20 and meet advarsaries with great equipment and armour.  But I am not that strong.  So I kill these guys and don't have the strength to carry off everything they have.

Oh, poor poor me.   Well,  I expect I will just have to more on.  And besides I am still enjoyng this.

Kay, you're a mage, right? Make a feather spell. Temporarily allows you to carry more. Or if a ring or amulet with constant effect, forever. I wear a ring with +15 feather constant effect. In dungeons & ruins I open a mod (cheat [Image Can Not Be Found]) called Bag of Holding - a virtual bottomless pit that holds whatever I cram inside.

Limited weight or bag slots are aggravations I refuse to tolerate in my games if I can do something about it.

Yea,  I'm the Arch Mage, sort of.   [Image Can Not Be Found]   See, Yap, this is why I should not be basing my character on magic.  It doesn't automatically occur to me to use magic to solve my problems.  [Image Can Not Be Found]  But off to do the feather skill solution.[Image Can Not Be Found]

Thank you,  as usual, for your guidance.

Yap,  I am having a problem with enchanting items.    I enchanted some mithral boots with feather and it worked great.  But when I saved and exited the game last night and checked back in today,  my enchanted mithral boots were not in my  inventory.  So I did it all again– no feather mithral boots.   So I did again with a ring.  That doesn't work any better.

What is going on here?  Any ideas?   I can't afford to enchant an item for just one playing session.  Help.

I had a feather spell tied to one of my eight quick slots. Getting the gravy train moving quickly is important in a combat situation. No wonder no one thinks to use magic though. The spell effects in Daggerfall are more spectacular than in Oblivion and that's 10 years earlier.

I think I was up on the hillside above Anvil for a mission to thwart some women who were robbing all the guys in town. I remember forget-me-nots on a fence overlooking the sea late in the evening and enjoying I think a Chablis procured from the larder of a disreputable noble. Then, sadly, duty intervened and I was called upon to offer up a tribute at the Alter of Smiteage.

My skills (abilities?) aren't high enough to enchant anything worthwhile nor can I capture souls past “common.” I wrote you a response & luckily went to check if what I'd said was true. It wasn't.  I'm almost an Arch Mage myself…doesn't look like I'm ready to lead either, does it?  [Image Can Not Be Found]

Were the boots in your inventory before you exited your play-session? (from what you wrote: yes) Had you equipped them? Must you take them on & off to work thus using up your charges? I'm at a loss. It's hard for me to advise when my game, leveling, even my menus are modded so that things don't look (or behave) like yours.

Here's a link about feather & according to this wiki, feather doesn't work as well as or even *as* I'd assumed. (caveat: I'm running unofficial patches so maybe my feather bug is fixed).

http://www.uesp.net/wiki/Obliv.....y_Strength (it's about feather vs. fortify strength)

gem sizes needed for enchant powers

Could you go back to a save before making the boots & test? Make 'em & exit. Reload & check. Exit, reload before making them, make 'em, use 'em, wear 'em, exit & reload. Sounds complicated but when I'm troubleshooting a problem I can have a dozen saves back & forth in time. The consecutive numbers assoc. w/ the saves don't reflect the true passing of time.  I use the time stamps…and detailed notes describing what/when/where re: save #s…to keep track of what I'm doing. And yes, I get messed up but it's the only way I know for testing outcomes to a problem.

I've pretty much done that drill a number of ways, Yap,  but haven't found a solution.   But from other stuff you sent links to, it sounds like feather isn't such a great spell anyway (and I do have the actual spell and can use it that way).  It sounds like what I really need is a fairly good fortify strength spell.   Actually what I really should do is get off my horse, stop using fast travel and run everywhere.  That would actually make me strong.  That's about as appealing as getting up every morning at 6 to go running.  That has never happened either.

However, thanks for the ideas and info.  Kay

I think I am getting close to the time to finish off Oblivion.   I have done the main and the other Shivering Isle quests.  Today I finished Ghosts of  Vitharn.   I have one more quests in the Knights of the Nine pack to do --Mehrunes Razor.  I have enjoyed these add on packs. There was some originallity here.

But truth be known,  I have done some of most everything and am getting bored.   It is time to go back to Bruma and gather up the troops (and Martin) and go after this Oblivion gate.  And then finish the whole thing off.   I will check in later if I survive.

Good luck to you, Kay!

Keeping Martin alive long enough for the Big Gate to open was difficult. Actually, impossible. Over & over he died until I created a “Heal Martin” spell & leveled Restoration high enough to cast it (on him). Once inside, I had to exit and create another spell since I had not put a single point in athletics (my  leveling mod does not reward for using abilities like run & jump).

Afterwards I was so traumatized, I took weeks off from Oblivion. Now I'm back but refuse to participate in Martin's next scheme. Like you, I'm going to do Shivering Isle first. Maybe finish the Dark Brotherhood but their tasks have crossed into my discomfort zone. I don't think I want to be one of them no matter how neat their quests may be designed. OK,  yes Yap you are right.  Keeping Martin alive is a bitch.  It only worked when I kept away from him and I also had a shitload of soldiers from all over to fight and protect  him.

I am now inside the great Oblivion gate (with Martin alive outside ).  I keep trying to get to the great tower but constantly get confused inside the lesser towers.  Tomorrow I will try again.

Done, finished.  So much for Martin.  He took himself a little too seriously but I guess because of him I am still alive.  Game over.  Kay
