Got the bandit boss. I resorted to running around the fields while Handor fought him. I got a couple swipes in. Later, when I returned, I couldn't find his body and when I finally did, no sword. It was lying a bit away from him. I kept selling goods at the castle and the seller's amount never budged, I sold more than twice what she had in gold.

I think there is fog in the game. There seems to be no rhyme or reason for the crashes. I've entered the game and crashed imediately. Lately it has been the Microsoft error message which is easy to get out of. Last time I watched as the memory usage for oblivion.exe climbed from 1.3 Gig to 1.6 Gig before I shut it down.

Where can I buy a level 2 fireball spell? I just noticed I am level 2 in magic.

Later—I bought a level 2 fireball in the old harbor but it doesn't show in my inventory and no gold deducted. Why am I having trouble buying spells?

OK, I went back later and tried again. Did not haggle and was able to buy at full price. I don't think haggling had anything to do with it because his disposition didn't change.

I got my level 2 fireball at the Sanctum from the destruction merchant. The guy at the waterfront has level 3 fireballs too.

Now in Chapter 2. Can't really say much at this point without massive plot spoilers so I won't. Other than I got there via the last Main Quest quest and at a pretty rapid clip. I'm at level 10. Hopefully that will suffice. On the way out of Chapter 1 I ran into some clannfears though they are calling them Gorgers in this game. One of them was healing itself. Scary…self-healing monsters. They were coming in mobs too.

I believe I ran into the same ambush you mentioned--the tempting chest/crate. They were much too tough for me , so I ran to a nearby bridge and the guards took care of them. Did you get a quest entry from it? I am at level 8. I better search out some dungeons and level up some more, since I will be heading back to the main quest after looting the town. Anxious to try out my upgraded fireball.

I did get a quest entry from the bandit ambush. It's a tiny little side quest that got me a fireball mine recipe, I think. It's instructions on how to make that mine that I haven't looked at yet. I think I benefited by the bandits all grouping up so when my fireball hit it got them all. Or it might have been a lucky critical hit. I have unloaded on guards before point blank with the fireball and not done a lot of damage so it's hard to say.

I'm off to see if Chapter 2 is going to be too tough for me or not.

Did you ever get through the front gate of Erothin?

Edit---I finally did get it open. I was tired of going the long way around. Why do they make it difficult?

I think it was a bug. They mentioned it was fixed in the new patch that just came out so I don't think it was on purpose. I lucked out and just hit T and waited and it opened the first time. Once it opens it works normally from there on out.

I got a screen in Chapter 2 saying I should be at Magic level 2 at least so I think I'm okay. I extricated myself just fine from my predicament at the beginning of the chapter and am leveling up before going further in the main quest.

Has anyone found the key to the gate in the Isrean (sic) ruins back in the starter area? I was going cross country from Giliad to the Sanctum and came upon it. It was mentioned early in the game but there is yet another locked gate. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Raiding farms outside of Erothin right now for crops to make potions to sell to Alma the Alchemist to buy training.

I'm raiding the crops too. Made it to Alchemy 23 with just a mortar and pestle. You don't need to buy training. Just making the potions will raise your alchemy level. Then sell the potions. I don't remember the gate in the starting area. I'll check it out. I did come across the fact that the key to the exterior door of the torture chamber and prison was supposed to be on top of the chest with your stuff. I never saw it, but I was tossing crates around.

I specifically looked on top of the chest, on the plate on the chest and under the plate on the chest and there was no key. Could have accidentally bumped it to the floor but I searched that room pretty thourougly looking for the key to no avail. Luckily the fast travel was working.

I think farming those crops is close to breaking this game. In one real life hour of collecting crops just outside Erothin I made over 4,000 gold and upped my Alchemy from 5 to 47 without buying any training whatsoever. Now I have both Blade and Light Armor up over 50.

I have a low Destruction though and wished I had put a little more into it when I had the chance.

Just keep on discussing. I'm reading every word. All music to the faq-starved ears of the one who hasn't yet reached Erothin but is mighty impressed with the countryside surrounding it.

You know the exploding chest placed by bandits in the middle of the road? I've been wandering forever trying to complete the quest that asks why? and how? Got note from trailer/wagon that mentions a mine, can't get into the twin towers. What do I do? Quest won't update so I keep circling around the green arrow on my map. [Image Can Not Be Found] Instead of prgressing to Erothin.

You guys will be exploring Vegas (in Fallout) & I'll still be less than lvl 10 in Nehrim. Admittedly, Nehrim isn't the only game I'm playing at the moment....can't seem to limit myself to less than simultaneous six. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Yappette, I am in the same place as you on that quest. I read the note and guessed that maybe I would come across something later. I could check out the Steel Rail Mine, I suppose. I left it for now.

Scout, I agree on farming the crops. I stopped at 25. It is an easy way to get cash and the crops regrow in four days. I did that dungeon between Giliad and the sanctum last night. More interesting than most of them and I got a chance to try out my level 2 fireball. I'd hit them twice with the fireball and finish with my sword. Very effective, and I picked up a lot of XP.

Hey, Pokey, thanks for the reassurance that I'm not losing my questing-mojo. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Isn't this game just the best thing ever? For me, so much better than Oblivion that I finished playing only months ago. And is still on my XP drive so I can continue with quest mods. I am enjoying Nehrim gobs & gobs more.

I've been hankering ([Image Can Not Be Found]) to revisit Morrowind having never played either expansion. This time I know enough to equip (modded) fast-travel boots from Day One. Now I'm thinking SureAI's total conversion instead. The group did two, Arktwend is the only one translated into English.

Pokey and Yapette, the fire mine inside the chest quest is a funny one. It's just basically finding another chest (a square generic one at that) down on the side of a cliff right out in the open. I just opened my local map and found it that way. It's not in any dungeon, just halfway down a cliff in some rocks.

I am liking this game a lot. While it's not as elegant as Morrowind, it's got the same kind of vibe, quirky quests and really different parts of the map. Obvlion was so homogenous that it sort of subconciously wears you down. Whatever spark they had with Morrowind they lost on Oblivion. The Nehriim guys seemed to have found the right formula though. Beth needs to hire them like Valve hired the Portal guys though I have a feeling that will never happen.

I checked around Erothin to see if anyone would give me a better price on my farm potions but they all offer the same deal so I'm just taking everything to the mage in the Mage Cave. Also I figured out that the gold amount for the merchant is the maximum amount for any single transaction. If you try to sell more than that amount the game will tell you the merchant doesn't have enough gold. Just reduce the amount, do the deal, exit and come right back in and do it again.

I'll have to check out the total conversion on Morrowind.

I guess I can afford to buy that horse now. And that house. And some new armor, and some....

Finally made it to Erothin. Now I keep crashing, like 5 times in less than an hour. Frames per sec *suck* in the city. And near around & about it. [Image Can Not Be Found] I may have to reinstall (for 3rd time) – something ain't right. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Oh, last night post patch I wasn't getting messages in upper left corner (what I pick, leveling something, quicksaving, etc). A reload fixed it, for a while. Noticed on forum (reading now) that others experienced same thing. Seems to come & go (messages disappearing) for unknown reasons.

I'm crashing a lot too. I'm doing the Moon Sheep quest. Have been through the cave and got a key off Amanda. I can't find anyplace to use it.

I went over the mountains to the west and north and past a couple of cities under siege. Burned out countryside. I got my wish. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Northern wolves are tough as nails and fast, fast, fast. They remind me of the boars in Gothic 3. I'm glad now I made all those restore health potions. Crossing Death Pass was one of the spookier gaming moments I've had in a while.

Finally made it to a monastery deep in the mountains where Kim was waiting and found my Destruction trainer.

I need to peel back and level up much more before I advance any further. Erothin, here I come.

Back.

That sounds scary. think I'll level up some more. I'm at 9 now.I figured out what I did wrong. I had been sneaking a lot to improve the skill and pickpocketed Amanda instead of talking to her. On my way back to the Sanctum.

Edit—I don't think I got the best ending, just a reward from Vanmiria and the farmer is mad at me. I remember some strange dialogue on entering the cave, which makes me suspicious.

The scary part is how well spaced the critters are. So many games just throw them at you at such a pace that you get numb. Here you travel a ways along the path before your next encounter so the suspense and anticipation builds. I'm at level 12 now and crabs up by the mountain monastery are kicking my butt. Mostly they have huge damage so if you can stay out of reach you are better off. The Northern wolves will take half your health with a single hit so the two-handed sword is really good for keeping them at bay. I finally stopped trying to time my blows and just kept up a steady swinging arc so the wolf couldn't get close. Sort of like being a boxer with an extra long reach. They don't seem very impressed with my fireball. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I was getting so many crashes after the patch that last night I uninstalled and reinstalled Oblivion and Nehrim both and didn't patch Nehrim. I'll see if it make any difference.

Good idea, Scout, about the reinstall without the patch. I didn't go that way….yet….as in addition, I must manually (meaning folder/file by bloody folder/file) install OBSE & my minimap mod & all the textures & meshes I replaced (manually, folder, by folder).

What I did was reinstall (manually [Image Can Not Be Found] by plopping them in again) the textures/meshes, a patch I hadn't used, then a fix patch to all that. Played  almost 2 hrs. before crashing! What isn't helping my game is moving saves from one computer to another, XP to Win7, different hardware & screen resolutions.

Two things to keep in mind.

1) This one I discovered by myself. Can't seem to disable autoload (now I know to hold shift key) so when I put in Oblivion disk it will load, I'll cancel BUT it will automatically create a new Oblivion.ini just in that short time. *Overwriting* [Image Can Not Be Found] the .ini that has Nehrim settings. Then load a save & the .ini with default Oblivion settings loads resulting in Nehrim complaining bitterly. Took me weeks to realize this one.

2) Read today if having framerate problems (check!), turn off depth of field in diary's settings. I had completely forgotten about those settings although I used them to turn off all autosaves.

I rescued Kim – love, love his goofy grin. His face reminds me so much of our latest adopted dog (chi-Italian greyhound mix) who we sometimes call Goofus due to her grin & stick-out-sideways flopping ears (like a Jester's hat or Toger's).

Now not sure where to go – sheep? steal letter in Erothin? bounty? or wander.

Did you read in patch notes the donkey & horse speeds were nerfed? Do you both have 'em? Can you tell? I may buy a house instead.

Last question: are npcs really, really ugly & curt with you? They pinch up their faces, spit out an insult & close conversation. First time ever I begin to get an inkling of how it feels to be part of a despised race – in real life or in a game. Job well done, SureAI! Although if I'd known this, I'da chosen to be a human. I'm still getting quite a few crashes and some screen freeze, which I hadn't had for a while. Last night I had a strange one, At the sheep farm, there were a bunch of purple boxes hanging over the sheep pen. Kind of like a chandelier. I quick save a lot more often than usual.

Yappette, I vote for the sheep quest, if only to find out how your quest goes. I think I missed something even though the quest ended. It's not very long. The people do not treat me badly. I am human (Alemanne). I didn't patch the game.

I have a very simple install so it wasn't so bad. I looked at that texture mod you mentioned Yapette but it had like forty millions files in it and I smell the burning odor of confilicts and I don't want to mess with the mod manager so I'm learning to love mushy soft Nehrim. You MANUALLY moved ALL those files out and back in??? Hardcore.

I've only had a couple of freezes today so I'm crossing my fingers that this worked. Reading the patch documentation carefully there is nothing I really care about that much so I'll go without it for a while.

That sheep quest: Did you find an new cave for Amanada? I got her set up in her new home but the sheep herder hates my guts for questioning his word even though I saved his sheep. No loss. It's a funny quest.

What an odd place to put game setting, huh? In the inventory, in a diary…wtf?

I'm also a Nord or an Alemanne. Mostly NPCs complain about the Aeterna constantly. As you branch out in the game you'll see lots of rivalries between all kinds of different factions and the modders have woven this subtext in nicely. I was pleasantly surprised. More shades of Morrowind.

I ran back to Erothin from Mountain Monastery. This game isn't respawning at all, at least not in the same chapter. I'm going to graze a while on the lower level areas and clean out some dungeons.
