Only watched 5 min. so far (don't want to use up my gaming time passively watching [Image Can Not Be Found]).

His point about companies measuring xxbillion data points on players....I have been thinking about just this the last few nights as I play a closed beta of Forsaken World.

I'm part of a phase 1 group invited to play for a month (many more clamoring to get in but can't) yet I don't post on the official forum & haven't (yet) received requests for feedback. Nevertheless I feel like I am fulfilling my obligation as a beta participant. More so than alpha "bug testing," it's who I create & delete, how I explore or don't, what classes I play or avoid, how I fulfill quests or can I even find them? All the while I'm logged in I invision a virtual Eye-in-the-Sky gathering data on my choices.

So, those are my thoughts after 5 minutes of TED. Yes, agreed, what an opportunity for measuring associations between (and among) variables (Helmut, never causal! I studied survey research! [Image Can Not Be Found] = multiple regression analysis).

Who is that guy, anyway? Later I will google him but right now he doesn't ring any bells.

That seemed like he was talking about online gaming which I don't do but some interesting points about reward-based learning.

Speaking of which this game has suddenly turned into a timed platformer (a type of game I loathe) in which the only way to learn the pattern of blocks rising from the lava is to die repeatedly. I've reloaded over 25 times. I'm out of here for now. Maybe later when I'm in a better mood but if this any indication of where this supposed role playing game is headed I mightjust be wrapping it up right here. Ugh. Shades of Risen.

Eeewwww, Scout, likewise. Hate that you must quit (maybe to return) but rest assured, I won't play timed platform jumping either. [Image Can Not Be Found] Certainly not 25 reloads' worth. Each successive reload results not in improvement but rather deterioration: hands get more sweaty, I get more anxious, and jumping ability gets worse & worse.

Nehrim was great while it lasted.

What's up next for you?

I have my usual fall-off-back-ofa-truck version at $30 of ArcaniA (actually, it's an EU multi-language release) in the wings.

TED is always interesting - even when I am not particularly interested in the topic.  Their speakers are brilliant.  In this case...as if we at TAP needed any more vindication for gaming....

A TED conference would be a terrific thing to attend.  Earlier this year on the TED web site I saw just how expensive those conferences are - $5000+ per person, and that is just the registration.  Then there's travel, food, lodging.  One can dream.

Spike, I think big ticket items like TED are covered under the Tap philanthropy program. Just send your voucher in and it'll be handled. $5K, that's steep, but at the very least you'll have some awesome trivia questions!

I dislike the notion of being harvested for weighting values for fuzzy logic algorithms. I do like learning about what makes games fun while the rest of real life feels so lame. I've long felt I'd be better off if I treated my life like a role playing game and spent more time at it than I did gaming, it just turns out real life's reward system is poorly designed. Unless you game it, which is a game in itself. Success awaits!

I listened to a program on Canadian public radio tonight, unfortunately, disjointed, in the car doing errands. If I'm not mistaken, the researcher was talking about showing pictures to subjects to generate an emotional response in the brain. Nothing new about that. The new step (if I'm not mistaken) was monitoring the same centers of the brain when the subject simply thought about the pictures, and with pattern recognition the subjects could show a slide show of those same images on a computer monitor. The upside for 'locked-in' patients who can't speak or move is incredible in that they can now learn a language (albeit a very expensive one) with researchers via images and real time brain scanning.

Real time brain scanning is slightly concerning to me however.

Pokey, I got rid of the 3 seraphim guarding the door, entered the prison that reminded me of Bioshock with fish through windows and cannot find how to progress. No way can I open a Hard lock, have a spell but Alteration 30 pts too low to cast.

Is that the only way out? Read book on water, cast fire on pipes, banged around pipes looking for hotspot, searched walls, can't break windows. Can't go back as walkways over fall-to-death too high. Am I doomed to casting Open Easy Lock till I level Alteration to 50?  [Image Can Not Be Found]

Edit: Just for the heck of it I tried to auto-unlock the hard gate & it opened! Freedom! Although I'm not so sure I did a good deed by freeing that Lady Killer. To say I'm conflicted is an understatement.

Oh, Helmut!  Thanks for telling me about the TAP philanthropy program.  I was thinking of a year's stay in Italy, studing the gaming culture there.  With dissertation. That should qualify me for a grant.

All new wowie-zowie discoveries have a potential good side and a potential dark side.  The trick is keeping the good and preventing the bad.  This is can also be true for huge cultural changes.

"By Jove, if ladies are granted the franchise, then our homes will cease to be clean, well-organized havens against the tumultuous world.  Our children will not be fed.  Our shirts will no longer be laundered and starched, just waiting for us to don them before we head out to the world of business.  Life as we know it will cease to exist."

So...brain scanning...this, too, we shall deal with.

Yap, I keep a supply of about 40 lockpicks in case I meet up with a hard lock. Maybe that one was set to unlock quickly, but I've had one or two open with just one lockpick. Usually it doesn't take many with auto-unllock. If it does, just reload and hope for a better result.

I just had a door that said it needed a key, but after I read the message on the floor, it opened. Never know what to expect.

I kind of enjoyed the rising platforms over the lava puzzle. Just need to find the path, no problems with jumping.

Just tell me it goes back to regular old box opening and monster killing. I hate those sudden platformer things that come out of nowhere. It really ruins my day, esp., after dealing with NPC falling through walls and getting trapped in end dead chambers. Bad show.

Much, much later, after 47 reloads I finally made it through. And just after I tried

enabling god mode and swimming across the lava and that works just fine. Probably a bunch of restore potions might work too but enough of this room.

The next room is confusing as well. The trick is to never stop looking across the room toward the big guy. Use you WASD keys but don't face any other direction.

O Woe. I am where you were Scout, on the drawbridges with a pressure plate supposedly firing arrows at ?

Putting aside fact that not a point has been spent in marksman, I did find the hidden bow. What in hell am I supposed to be shooting at? And where am I running to?

I once made it quite far on first run past pressure plate. Except I'm running away, the opposite direction from my partner. Is that right?

I once hit that black square near him & got an "effect" & he said to hurry...but where? on what?

I am feeling dumber & dumber. Like I'm missing brain cells or something. [Image Can Not Be Found]

I tried leaving him standing outside the ruin, waiting for me to follow him & going off to explore but the game wouldn't let me teleport. I'm thinking I might break the game if I do that.

Yapette, once you put the arrow through the black square and get zapped by the speed ball go left to the first drawbridge but be sure to jump on the pressure plate just before the drawbridge. Then just run along the ramp as the bridges lower. If you don't get the speedball you won't run fast enough and will get stranded. Then when the white balls start shooting at you (you know what I mean when you see them) see if you can run to the far right of that particular bridge. I actually ran on the right side rail. Then when you get to the platforms, just look in my spoiler post for the quick and dirty way across. This whole part of the game chaps me. [Image Can Not Be Found]  It's so inelegantly designed that they had to make the big guy give you hints as you go along. And yes, he is supposed to be running along in another corridor completely. You see him in the distance occasionally but don't worry about him. Just keep going forward and save often.  Let me know if you have trouble with the phototropic guy at the end.

I'm out of the Temple and back in the game world. I don't think I have any more quests but I think I will check first in case this thing takes me on rails all the way to the end.

Thanks, with some tgm & many many full saves, I am done.

Went with him to the monastery, took the horse & went South instead of following him North to Cahbaet. [Image Can Not Be Found] Unfortunately, Scamps on the road hurt my Palomino down to a sliver of health. Afraid the horse would die (mine is white, safely elsewhere), I turned North, met up with A, but at the fork I turned Left (to get the Blood Mage gloves [Image Can Not Be Found]) while he went Right toward Cahbaet.

Got the gloves, stopped for tonight after going over the mountains on the twisty path. I hope he'll wait for me, like days if need be. I want to 'splore.

I'm in the Creator's Temple with Kim. He is finally actually helping fight. He said something about the temple being really huge and that we should be careful not to get lost. Knowing this game, I'm thinking I will be here for a while.

Scout, no wonder you liked the Black/Dark Death Armor. I love it! Found the robe, boots & gloves. Now I need the hood – have you found that yet?

Funny, in my Oblivion I used the same mods the devs have used in Nehrim for elf race faces, hair & this Black armor. The armor is a mashup: top is from Babarized armor pack (mod) for Bab's Body (mod), skirt part from Slof's Robes (mod) – what my character wears in Oblivion. Both my Nehrim & Oblivion characters have almost identical face & hair too. I'm either unimaginative, rigid…or it's such a good combo I can't/won't play anything else.

Back to the game after a break. Callisto, Kim and I are in the palace after a trek though the mountains in the dark. That was fun trying to find a path to a fortress. At times I lost Callisto in all the foilage. Now we are here and have to carry out Callisto's plan.

I'm running around with Callisto and Kim too. We just got to Ostian and Callisto is taking a break. I've been following NPCs for a while now and have taken off to explore the souther realm on my own. I guess I was gifted a castle after the last battle up north but I've never even seen it.

I did find another set of Black Death boots down here in a dungeon but no hood yet. The black has the same armor rating as with the Blood Mage armor so they seem pretty equal. Wearing the 3 peices of the black set right now with the red hood and haven't noticed much difference. I ran into about 6 nasty mages and actually had to run away and draw them off in twos. Been awhile since I've run into a group in this game. That was fun.

I'm in the same place – actually, the field with ex-Nicci, haven't gone to the house yet.

Thoughts:

Boy is my game world littering up with dead bodies, mainly wolves & soldiers.

Lost my best 1h enchanted sword – must have dropped it while doing a piss-poor job releasing the undead paladins. Finally I stopped swapping fireball & rescue spells & went with a simpler sword + rescue spell.

How many times did you guys lose Callisto & Kim on that run? Thank heavens for green arrows on maps – even then they sometimes disappeared completely.

Ostian reminds me of Thailand & Cambodia with a touch of Sri Lanka…well, what little I saw of it running through. Mixed in with Cyrodiil's port city of Leyiwinn where the devs borrowed the graphics.

Any idea where our castle is? Behind what was a locked gate but now might be open? I followed Arrathinalaloney to the village instead of fighting at the castle.

I plan to cut off on my own like Scout but just remembered, oh-oh, I told Kim he could pal around with me. Maybe I should reload & tell him to go cool his heels w/ C.

I am not feeling good about any of this, all the way back to when I released Arrathinallaloney. Don't trust him…at all.

Yap, our castle is the one between Cahbeat and the village. The one where the fighting was.

I have all the ingredients at the palace but can't figure out how to mix them. I can get one added to the food, but no more.

Pokey, I just clicked on the two burners and the pot and the game automatically removed an ingredient and after the third one said it was a done deal.  No fussing with the z key for once. I just finished that quest and am now on a solo mission into the desert. I'm hitting all the locations between town and this hermit I'm looking for so its taking a while. Still no Black Death hood.

Yapette, I too have a bad feeling about Callisto and that so called non lethal poision. I fear this is not going to end well. Don't trust him one bit. Or the big guy. He has a strange light in his eyes that creeps me out. Kim also kinda creeps me out so I never take him along if I can help it. I don't find many sympathetic characters in this game. Fawkes would be cool to have along though. "I WIN AGAIN!" [Image Can Not Be Found]

I have three sets of shoes…just found the third set in the priest's room during the Mad Venture quest to make the poision. Must eventually get these to the queen bee before I trigger the end game.
