I've been downloading a bunch of Morrowind mods the last few days, have most of them installed and working, and gonna give the game another shot (I've played through the main quest line twice in the past, and played a hell of a lot of the game.) figured I'd share here in case anyone wanted to join me in a play-through.

You know you wanna...

Beat me to the punch Armand. On the brink of buying it.

Helpful mod logic guide for newcomers like me (I modded the crap out of Stalker years ago so I'm familiar with the art, but it's good to be sure you know what you're doing):

This will be a good lesson in modding Bethesda games for you Gregg, as they are almost always the same (modding-wise,) and Morrowind is easily the most pain in the ass one out of the bunch. Once you successfully mod this game, and future Beth game will be a breeze.

MW was my first crpg, the first time outside the safety of adventure games. Still have a printed copy of Desslock's MW guide that scout sent me as a .pdf years & years ago! Never played beyond the main campaign (which took me months what with restarts to rebuild myself). Never advanced beyond taking the boat to Tribunal (terrified of arriving too early in my leveling) nor stepped onto Bloodmoon.

I keep gathering mods…then they update so I gather them again. And yet again. [Image Can Not Be Found] All the while becoming overwhelmed with choices & options.  After finding this guy's site back in 2009 (he's kept it updated!), decided I'd do just what he did. Adding a few, just a couple [Image Can Not Be Found], of tweaks & mods of my own.

Since both my computers are new(and -ish) with newly installed win7, hard drives won't be changing anytime soon. I'll play along… Or rather, I'll begin to install. Before we even start I must warn you: I cheat. First up is finding a mod that allows me to walk faster than a snail. First time around I was a Breton so once I found the

Boots of Blinding

I didn't have the same issues as other races. This time I don't want to be human but I sure as hell intend to run. From minute one off the boat!

Huzzah! Glad to have you join us Yap. Or at the very least, begin the process of installation. And don't worry, I cheat as well. The game's travel system is a bit demanding. I'm using mods that link all the silth striders together, and all the ports together. Should make getting around a lot easier. I'm also using a mod that accelerates magic regeneration. I love this game, but it's a bit more demanding than I can handle at this point.[Image Can Not Be Found]

And thanks for the link to that site as well. I didn't get very good visual upgrade mods, but this site seems to have them covered well. Downloading now!

EDIT: Okay, I just installed the Morrowind Graphics Extender, and it looks like a whole new game. Absolutely beautiful!

Get that constant effect levitation ring that lets you fly. I loved flying in Morrowind.

As I said in an email to Armand: I've never played an open world RPG. Then again I've not played many RPGs full stop. FFVI, FFVII, FFVIII, Vampire: Bloodlines and Planescape: Torment are the few that come to mind.

I'm going to head into town in the next hour and see if they've got the GOTY version tucked away somewhere. Game are selling it online for £5 so hopefully they'll have it in-store.

All I want mod-wise is bug fixes, balance tweaks (like the Herbalism and Magicka regen thing) and visual updates. A few face reskins might be nice as well -- never gelled with Bethesda's Elder Scrolls faces.

Morrowind is easily broken (or fixed!) without mods. It's possible to become invulnerable to all damage within fifteen-twenty minutes and then go explore. I can look up the details if anyone wants them.

In the unmodded game travel is a bit tricky. It's easy to traverse the island once you have it all together (codex/pylons, boat and strider schedules, mark/return spells, boots, jump scroll, levitation) but starts slow. There was no unified system. I liked that: the map is wrinkled with some areas more time consuming to reach and flattening locally after exploration and understanding of the varied options. Immersion. Still, I doubt I'd have patience for that today; it's an old design.

There's no harm in linking all the boats & striders with a mod. A different experience but better than none at all. It is a must see game. I [Image Can Not Be Found] Morrowind.

Went into Game, the guy told me he hadn't seen the GOTY version in about 6 months.

Went to Cex, found the Bloodmoon expansion for £1. Still no base game.

Went to Gamestation, no cigar.

Went back to Cex, found the base game for £4! But no Tribunal. Oh wait! It comes bundled with Tribunal! Result! Oh and what's that? Operation Flashpoint for 25p? *swipe*

The expansion instruction manuals have some sort of crud on them but the maps are in good nick. Time to get installing and patching…

Wow, you have a lot of options for places to buy games!

Use the link Yap sent Gregg. It has great instructions (yes, better than the one you found.) Thanks to its help, my game is looking so freakin' smooth and nice!

As for flying, one of the mod races is mogs from the final fantasy series. It's somewhat of a cheat mod though, because the mog race can leap across small villages in one go, and land safely. Like I said, bit of a cheat, but real fun to play!

Edit: Also, Gregg, if you want some help/advice on installing mods, I'll give you a hand later through Steam's voice chat. Once a few simple things are explained, it's not so hard.

But you miss the fun of plunging to your death, Armand. That sinking feeling, literally, when you are 100 feet in the air and the 120 second levitate spell has just worn off and there are wolves waiting below just in case you survive the quick stop. [Image Can Not Be Found] Good times.

Forgot when I signed up for this mission that I commute between houses & pcs every weekend. Think it's asking the impossible to install two duplicates (yes, that's redundant), getting every mod & tweak identical. So many chances for Fail!

I'm going to try my new notebook - hardware is more than adequate, screen is a measly 15" but a great resolution of 1920x1080. So far I've added MWGE and the intro looks like crap! Haven't tweaked MWSE yet (cause haven't learned how) but should I be using a more 4x3 aspect ratio? Not so sure MW's graphics won't be puuulllleeeed way out, something I cannot play (fat npcs & ovaloid circles).

Yes, a Ring of Constant Levitation! After enchanting pants in my first game, I never walked again. Except through low-hanging doorways. Fond memories of transportation-running npcs looking skyward as they asked where I wanted to go.

Hey Scout, there must be a mod now that tells npcs, "Move your butt(s)!" I recall your greatest complaint was npcs blocking doorways, I'll fix those suckers too if I can.

Maybe we ought to start another thread: Morrowind: Broken Edition. I intend to mod out any irritations I can remember....heh, heh, GreggB will be playing a completely different game. Wait'll he tries to read road signs on his way to .....wherever. [Image Can Not Be Found]

So sorry graphics extender won't work for you, GreggB. Don't sob, I didn't use it last time, enjoyed the game just fine.

Here's hoping a graphics pack will make my game look great. Otherwise, it's multi-headaches as I attempt two identical installs. After waiting all these years, I refuse to play anything less than a beeoootiful MW (anyone see that guy's video before it was pulled? MW 2011 or something like that))

Step 12 in that page's info you posted deals with the field of view, the effect of everyone looking too fat. I was having the same problem, but that fixed it right up. I think it was called FPS Optimizer or something like that. The section you want to go to in the little program is unavailable in the novice mode of the software. Just check that off to get to it (I swear this will all make more sense once it's in front of you.)

http://planetelderscrolls.game.....38;id=1701

And the mod link above deals with NPCs blocking doorways.Hope that helps. 😀

I for one am having a blast so far. After trying out some 4-5 different character race/class combo's, I've settled on a Wood Elf Jack-of-all-trades with an emphasis in magic. I'd never played as a wood elf before, as they seem kind of uninteresting next to some of the others, but it's a nice change. I was hoping to be smaller in stature however. The game has such a great way of pulling you in and creating a sense of wonder... once you get past some of the clunky controls and painfully slow walk speed. Still, it's still a blast to play.

Armand, how many mods are you playing with? Now? [Image Can Not Be Found] I will bet 2000 LBP you'll add more as you progress (I always do).

Seems my 2 external HDs, 3 flash drives, and 2 burned cds don't have many of the mods on that guy's list.  Or mine are old versions. Meaning I'm starting my gathering from scratch. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Thanks for the link...I'd better pay for a month's membership on tesnexus.

Yikes, you'll have a full set of glass armor before I get off the boat!

I've downloaded most of these so far (apart from the 'Remedial Fixes') and will be looking into some of the 'infrastructural fixes' (herbalism, magicka regen etc.) next. I'll either be using Wrye's Mash mod manager or the Morrowind Mod Manager listed in that link you sent Yap.

Because the MGE is significantly reducing fog whenever I enable distant lands (to get nice water effects and foliage) there's really nasty pop up and everything looks "'bald' and un-mysterious" in the distance. So far the un-extended Morrowind looks and performs better than the extended version but I'd love to have animated foliage (like Stalker) and nice reflective water. It's no major though.

I didn't notice any widescreen ovalation (something I'm usually quite sensitive to) but I did notice that everything seems to be zoomed in slightly because the FOV isn't right (I'll be looking into the fix above). I think it's cropping the top and bottom of the screen slightly.

Some of you might want to check out the first few mods under 'Important Nondiscretionary Bug Fixes' in the list above:

Guar Followers Fix v1.00 [TheOne&Only]: Fixes bugs with escorting Rollie the Guar, and fixes the Corky teleportation bug in Lurlock's Improved Followers v1.3 Beta. [Jul. 2009. Recommended for use with Lurlock's Improved Followers v1.3 Beta, listed below, but is not required to be run with it. Unverified.]

Improved Followers v1.3 Beta [Lurlock]:

Attempts to compensate for the horrible pathfinding AI in the game (which typically causes companions and NPCs following the player to get lost and/or stuck on minor terrain features, and is a generally-acknowledged source of unreasonable frustration for players) by adding a script commonly used by companion mods to all NPCs that follow the player in the game. [May 2005.]

Specifically, the companion script following the player: (1) temporarily adjusts their speed to the player's speed plus a certain amount so that, no matter what the player's speed, they can keep up; (2) increases their acrobatics to reduce their likelihood of deaths from falls; (3) makes it so that hitting them accidentally (an annoyingly common thing) will not cause them to become hostile (ruining whatever quest they're involved in), but instead will cause them to yell "Be careful!" or "I'm on your side!"; and (4) adds a warping script that makes them teleport to you if they become too far away.
This version is fully functional and eliminates much frustration, but is not completely tested. Notably, it does not work well with Corky, the guar sold to the player by Llovyn Andus for resale to Drulene Falen. However, TheOne&Only's Guar Followers Fix, above, includes a fix for Corky, and is recommended for use with this mod.  One can also simply use the CS or MWEdit to remove the script from Corky.

These:

Reduced (Passing) Commentary mod will very usefully limit the number of spoken greetings you hear from NPCs. This can add greatly to immersion in the game.  Vital.

Less Lore. Removes generic heard-it-all-before dialogue, through complex scripting.

Population:

Morrowind Comes Alive and Tamriel Rebuilt Comes Alive v.2. You might want to get the “Lite” version of MCA, if you have frame-rate issues.

Living Cities of Vvardenfell.  Puts NPCs on a schedule, they lock their doors at night. And much more.  A major mod.

Illuminated Windows,
with Bloodmoon expansion mod.  People’s windows glow at night, flicker
with candlelight.  Comes with two additional mods that serve as Tribunal
and Bloodmoon addons to the Atmospheric Sound Effects mod (see below).
Requires simple .ini file tweaking (use Notepad, and don’t forget to
backup first).

Ecology:

Sabregirl’s Ecology of Morrowind.
Also causes healthy wild animals to be far less aggressive — stops
constant cliff-racer attacks!  Diseased and injured animals still
attack.

Where Are All The Birds Going? 1.15.  Adds beautifully-animated birds and flying creatures.  Superb. Consider also adding A Flock of Seagulls for coastal birds. They don’t conflict.

Water Life
1.18.  Adds new beautifully-animated water creatures in and around
bodies of water.  Excellent. (If it causes errors, you may need to also
install the Water Seraphs mod).

The living cities and night time ones sound lovely.

Modding is totally a love/hate thing: love the way they improve the game, hate the sheer number of them to sift through and the conflicts they can cause.

Gregg, the one content changing mod I'd recommend for a first timer playing pure is something to give a merchant–any darn merchant, pick–more gold.

Morrowind proper has one vendor with deep pockets. Most players will never discover him because

he's an alcoholic crab on an isolated beach.

I understand the intent but it quickly becomes a major source of irritation rather than immersion. My battlemage spent half his time trying to find a new fence.
