Holy moly Rocky, I am being trounced again and again at the battle at night in the village of Redcliffe, As Toger suggested, I did the lead up quests. I thought I had done the most to prepare the down that I could. But that is not saving me or my party's asses. We did fine at the top of hill with Ser Perth but we can't seem to do it with the dead in town. I have tried using tactics. I have tried setting up each individual attack. I have tried fighting on the flats and fighting on the hill. And I have failed. (Sort of sounds like Afganistan doesn't it.) Well there is no giving up. I will have to try again. Imagine life with no hypothetical situations.
I finished the Redcliffe section of the main quest yesterday, the same place where kay is at and having problems. It went pretty smoothly but I had to watch Wynne's mana meter a lot and constantly feed her lyrium to keep her healing going. She was burning through it really fast and I realized she wasn't healing anyone. I tried this battle much earlier in the game and got quickly killed so I went out to spent a lot of time getting armor and weapons and xp. There is a section in the castle that is tough too. Luckily I had gone through prior events in such a way that the castle had a very happy ending except for one person who I decided not to help. When I had to pick a mage for the Fade there, I chose Wynne and had no problem pitting her against the demon. She is an incredibly powerful character, much more than I might have thought.
Morrigan has asked that we take a quest for her, one she can't come along on and I was worried with Wynne be the only mage but not so much now. Alistar still seems to need the most healing, I guess cause I have him using his Taunt to attract all the melee. I need to start casting force field on him more I guess.
Now off to the Dwarven part of the main quest, then the Elven I guess.
Scout are you saying that you went and did the castle before doing the battle at night in the town? I got the impression that if I left the town that was it and it would be decimated? If this isn't so, I should give the castle a try to build up more experience and better learn how to manage my group.
Toger, I just recently got Morrigan cone of cold and am messing with it. Seem like it will be a big help if I can figure out how to use it effectively. I imagine I will eventually get through this fight also. I just wanted to whine a bit. [Image Can Not Be Found]
Despite my abyssmal party management skills during battle, I am really liking this game. I have managed to up my popularity with some of my party through gifts. I find with Morrigan, however, that it is a step forward (I give her a gift that she likes) and then a step back (I do something she doesn't approve of). She is not an easy woman to please. Alistair on the other hand is a pushover.
I also think this game has a fairly good storyline and most of what you can do relates to the story. At times in both Morrowind and Oblivion I got way off into nonrelated side quests and totally lost the story line for long periods as I tried to become the head of this or that group.
Anyway. Still having fun. kay

kay, no I had to complete the battle in the village first before I could get in the castle. I was just commenting that the castle has a tough fight too, though not nearly on the scale of the village. I take it your party is dying in the village battle? I did read you could set up on that little bridge with the rope hand rails and let the creatures come to you. It's the one that dead ends at the water. I didn't do it so I don't know how well it works. The main problem with mobs is when they can flank you and hit you coming and going. That bridge could act as a choke point, much like the battle up at the windmill. You'll lose most of the villagers that way but I don't think it affects the outcome of the quest.
Cone of cold is an awesome crowd control device. You will freeze the occasional party member but unless you are playing on hard or nightmare they don't take damage (friendly fire) from the spell, just from any enemies pounding on them.
Another Morrigan spell that works well is force field. Cast it on Alistar after he uses Taunt. This will draw the enemy to him but they won't be able to harm him. Of course he can't harm them but it sort of acts as fly paper. Enemies swarm to him, hit him uselessly and the rest of you can pound away on them from behind. I use these two spells a lot.
I bought the downloadable content called the Warden's Keep and outfitted my Dalish Male Elf Warrior with the Starfang sword and the Commander Tower Shield from the resulting quest. I have my warrior and Alistar at 40 strength, with the best armor I can afford. From now on I'm going to pump up Dexterity which is supposed to help a lot in combat.
kay you might want to take as many side quests as possible though Redcliffe will scale to your xp level regardless of when you enter it, at least up to 14 or so. And yes, if you enter the village and then leave before the battle, the village gets wiped out. I did that once and reloaded. Not sure if you can just go to the castle then or not. It's main quest so I think probably so.
I'm currently down in the Deep Roads, looking for Branca, part of the Main Quest. I just entered the Dead Trenches area. Coolest cut scene so far. Earlier we took on and killed the Flemeth Dragon. That has been the hardest fight in the game so far and had the second coolest cutscene when my character got to bring the dragon down. I did lose a couple of my fighters and almost lost Wynne, which would have killed off the party but I got her back on her feet and she revived the others and with the help of a zillion health and mana potions we just baredly pulled it off. Never fear Steer, I've been at the mage training tower for at least 7 weeks. Don't even remember who "I" am.
I'd offer to start over (mandatory) with you, but Divinity II (bugs & all) will arrive this week. Party management is not my favorite so I expect DivII will call louder than DA:O.
Still playing super-buggy Alganon online & slogging through the last of Oblivion/Shivering Isles. I so do not like this game. My modded world looks stunning…but I find the inhabitants so personality deprived. Plus the handful (small hands at that) of actors voicing hundreds of npcs is beyond getting on my nerves.
Yes, the decision to hire like four people to voice every single character in the game was ill-advised. Since they'd spent all that money on Captain Picard and Boromir, maybe they should have had those two voice a few other characters as well.
Every now and then I get a hankering to play some Oblivion, and I find I enjoy it a bit more on the 360, strangely enough. But it doesn't take long for me to realize why I disliked that game. [Image Can Not Be Found]
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
I found the mage and human noble origins the least interesting. I will say that it was cool to see the Mage's Tower before everything went to shit.
I'm waiting on the DLC (delayed at the 11th hour. New drop date is end of this month... maybe) to contine my Dwarf Noble character. I want to see the looks on those smug faces when she comes waltzing back into Orzammar as a Grey Warden and tells her brother to "kiss my ass"! Bitter, much?

Four words:
Storm of the Century
I was playing around with Morrigan's AOE spells last night and had just gotten Spell Might. I cast it, then Blizzard, then Tempest and unlocked Storm of the Century. I watched in glee as the damage numbers above the heads of about 8 Darkspawn archers shot upward and the archers crumbled to the ground. What fun!
Scout, thanks for your advice. The one thing that stood out is your saying I should be at level 14. I am at level 9. [Image Can Not Be Found] My question to my self is no longer why can't I handle this battle in Redcliffe. The question is now how did I ever get through Broken Circle and Fade. [Image Can Not Be Found] I have no idea but I so often get throught these games without getting to the level everyone else is at.
I have decided to go back a ways and work more on upping my level and the level of my group. So that is what I am going to do.

Kay, have you been to the Brecilian forest? I started in Denerim and had a tough time with the dark alleys but managed to get by that. I then went to the forest and most of it is not hard till you get to the ruins. Even that is easier than the big battle in Redcliff. Maybe you need to try another area for a while.
I was definitely not level 14 when doing Redcliffe. I looked back at my posts and was only level 9 when I entered the Mage's Tower which I did after Redcliffe Village/Castle zombies et al. I don't think you really need to be at that high a level. There's a cap as to the level of some areas and depending on when you arrive in the area will dictate the level of enemies.

That's what I meant actually. There is a cap to an area so if you wait too long to go in it's not going to be at level 25 or something. I was around level 11 when I did Redcliffe. That said it couldn't hurt to have better armor and spells. Sorry for the confusion. I'm confusing a lot of people lately. [Image Can Not Be Found]
OK I read the last few posts and I think I get what you all are saying. Things sort of level up together to a certain point. I could probably do Redcliffe as level 9 just fine if I knew what I was doing. I do think some more experience would help me plan these big battles. Pokey, I was getting trounced in the back alleys of Denerim also. That's when I decided to go to Redcliffe. Dumb idea. I think I need to go back and pay my dues in the alleys and learn a bit. And then some time in the wilds might help also. Onward etc etc. Kay

Just finished the Brecilian Forest part of the Main Quest last night. I've been "abusing" crafting since Morrigan got her level 4 crafting talent. By making Potent Lyrium Potions from scratch from ingredients bought from the Quartermaster in the Tower and the bartender at the Gnawed Noble Tavern and then selling them back I can make about 100 gold in around 30 min. Sort of like the exploit in MW with that little Merchant except you don't have to advance the game timer 24 hours each time. I bought the Andruil's Blessing and some other trinkets, etc. and now my Warrior Elf is quite the little tank, amost invincible. I'm considering shelving Alistar for a while and bringing Leillani the rogue, back on for lock and trap and back stab and ranged attack duties. See how that works out. I agree with Steerpike, I wish I could have one more person in my party. But my PC and Alistar are getting redundant.
I only have the Anvil of the Void segment in Orzamar left and then all 4 of the contracts will be certified and it's on to Landsmeet.
I might take a run at the High Dragon up on the mountain first though to get that armor from Wade.
