I heard about that same box-stacking mechanic while hacking. It made me giggle.

I've found a number of odd places in my wanderings... I just have to be careful not to trigger pieces of side quests until I'm ready. I was able to talk my way into the police station, so I didn't find the entrance via the sewers until just recently.

I'll find that arms dealer. I just have to wander through the tenements further. I did find a guy who said something about an arms dealer "living right here", but "right here" to me and "right here" in game-time is entirely different, apparently.

Hell, some of those tenement buildings have no doors. Exploring is a pain. But I too need to see that guy. Daddy wants grenades.

Found the arms dealer's building... of course, I'd neglected to bring my extra weapons with me. Now I have to remember which tenement building it is. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Laughed myself silly in my numerous attempts to get everything from O'Mallory's apartment before being blown sky-high. Eventually, I figured it out.

I *think* I'm finally getting a handle on hacking. I managed to actually get money for the first time, ever. In all my prior hacks, I concentrated on gaining access and nothing more.

The hacking minigame is really well done, one of the best minigames I've seen. There are multiple strategies, it helps to think things through, and it seems to randomize so you don't get stuck in a rut.

I'm back in Hengsha and I think I've finally settled my weapon loadout - tranq rifle for leaving them alive, souped-up 10mm pistol for most of my killin', and a combat rifle for the bosses. I was using a heavy rifle, but even fully augmented, my inventory didn't have room for it and its giant ammo.

I also discovered I had an embarrassment of Praxis points. I bought the Typhoon system, though I'm not sure I see myself using it. It seems meanspirited.

Going after the spam nodes helps defeat the anti-intrusion system entirely, so I attempt to get to that. Once that is achieved, I go after every data store node there is. This has made the nuke virus count very comfy for when you really need them on a high security or stressful environment setup. Failing that, I try to capture nodes up to the green ones, then capture as many objectives until the alarm goes off, then go for the greenies.  I don't yet know what the 'stop' virus things are good for as they seem to stop me as well as the anti-intrusion program.

I just finished packing the heavy gun around most of the game. It is large, the ammo is large, it's inaccurate, and the only place you really need it is against the heavies, and you have to stand toe-to-toe with them to use it. No more! I found somewhere a very nice pistol upgrade that removes the armour advantage so a single headshot continues to work. For a while it took two or three shots per dude and I was considering dropping my lovely silenced/lased/damage upgraded beauty entirely. It's a nice combo with the stun gun and tranq gun, and helps maintain inventory to have all three. Mines are my favourite, but quite costly in terms of space. I found the Typhoon frustrating. You can take damage while it's starting, you need to be uncomfortably close to all intended victims for it to get them all and half the time somebody is behind a box or something and doesn't get hit, I'd rather hack the robots and have them on my side than destroy them using the typhoon, and it takes lots of power (to get close, then deploy). That said, there is a time when it's useful, especially if you're out of mines and not carrying the heavy gun.

Nice segue into a question: I know I'll need an actual gun to go up against the bosses, what should I carry?

With the exception of the prologue, I've gone completely stealth. I've got the tranq rifle (which I've fired maybe half a dozen times so far) and stun gun in my inventory. I've also got quite the stash in Jensen's apartment that includes a plethora of 10mm, shotgun and combat rifle. (My game included a code for cash and a silenced sniper rifle; however, even after activating said code I've not seen hide nor hair of either item.)

Thanks for the hacking information! That helps my understanding of what I'm supposed to be doing.

The sniper rifle is huge and unwieldy; I find it easier to take out foes with my laser-sighted pistol. Neither, alas, is very helpful against bosses, and this is the game's chief shortcoming: the boss battles are straight up firefights, so if you're used to silence and stealth get ready for a surprise. These foes require a lot of firepower to bring down, and the ones I've encountered so far move too quickly for the sniper rifle to be much use. Mines, grenades, and some piece of heavy ordnance are what you need.

The second boss is actually kind of a puzzle; if you listen carefully a character will tell you what to do, but it's very loud in there so you have to keep your ears pricked. The first annoyed the bejeezus out of me. I'm sure there are more to come.

Finally bought robot domination, so I'm looking forward to the next time someone tries to use one of those monsters against me! Aha! MY ROBOT!! DOMO ARIGATO, MOTHERFUCKER!

*ahem*

sorry.

Finished a second time today using an all out aggressive mode. By that I mean skulking about until I'm seen, luring all the guards over to the nearest vent where I'm hiding, and tasing them in the nutsack as they meander around outside, wondering why they can't crouch and shoot. It's not a proud existence, but it beats skulking about and being invisible 80% of the time and leaving them all alive talking behind my back about their slick new pocket secretaries and their secret passwords.

Each weapon seems to have a nicely designed weakness so you can't use one tool for everything. I packed around sniper/stun/silenced pistol/tranq for 95% of my work. Sniper rifle is loud and slow to reload and requires scope, tranq gun doesn't seem to shoot as far as it seems it ought to, pistol is hard to hit already alerted guards, and the stun gun is short range. That said, they all do one thing well and if you use them all you wont run out of ammo.

Something odd though, this time the first boss was felled after a stun gun shot. I thought the stun gun was a strictly passivation tool, but it must do some damage as well. I had a bunch of stun gun ammo, so I alternated between stunning and more traditional forms of damage.

Just last night, I noticed (finally) that the tranq rifle doesn't have the range - for tranquilizing opponents - you'd expect. It's great for luring guards off to the far distance, yet it does nothing to the guy that was in my sights. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Silly me, I found a speed loader few nights ago and applied it to the tranq rifle. No going back to fix that as I've come too far. Last night, I picked up a scope or silencer (I've forgotten already!) and more ammo pack. Haven't decided where to apply them, so they're in a pile on the floor of Jensen's apartment.

Found the other arms dealer (yay!) and have been hacking up a storm now that I understand what the hell I'm doing. Some of those level 2 hacks are ridiculously convoluted!

Still working through a last side quest (crimes & misdemeanors?) before heading into derelict row for the antennae quest.

New patch available

Also, there's a  new mod available.

"The Debug Menu allows you to manipulate the game (no health regen, infinite power, infinite ammo, AI options, UI options) and has a "Shop" feature, which lets you spawn yourself augmentations, money, weapons, weapon mods and other in-game items, as well as tons of debug options which you probably should leave alone."

Well, I've done something kinda stupid:

Dropped off my tranq rifle to make room for a bunch of other stuff to sell off... didn't need it because I was busy hacking things and clearing up side quests before tackling the antennae quest. Turned off the antennae, got dropped off at the merc factory where an MCB member sold me a scope for the rifle... which is sitting on the floor of Jensen's apartment! Thought to myself, "that's okay I haven't needed it lately, soldier on." Now I'm inside the factory and realize a tranq rifle would come in really handy right about now. [Image Can Not Be Found]

Trying to decide if I should reload or just carry on. I've made it this far without it...

Is that the quest with the "don't get seen at all" secondary objective, Toger? The tranq rifle is definitely helpful there, though not an absolute requirement. I still had a respect for human life at that point and was doing lots of tranquilizing, but things have grown darker in my outlook since. If you're not too far into the quest, it may be worth it to head back to your apartment.

No, the "don't get seen at all" quest I finished and did get the "ghost" XP… without using the tranq rifle. This is part of the main quest where the guards are patrolling with the humongous mechanized "dog" (for lack of a better term and that's what it looks like). It's right after Jensen realizes he's caught up with the group that hit the lab in the prologue.

"You're doing a helluva job, Brownie." [Image Can Not Be Found]

I think I can do the cat-walk patrolling guards without the rifle, it will just require a lot more timing and patience.

Ah yes, the mechanized dog. Honestly? Tranq rifle is less important at that point. Heavy ordnance might be preferable (though not against the robot dog).

I just finished the game this afternoon. My Deus is Exed.

I have no patience for most things in life, yet I can crouch for what seems like hours behind a box waiting for the right moment to take down a guard.

I made it past the point where I was whining. I'm a tad further on, but still in that same facility. Spent most of my time trying to get into the spot where there's about 6-8 interrogation rooms with not only patrolling guards on the same level, but patrolling snipers up above. I've been running back & forth between the 1st and 2nd floors trying to figure out the best way to approach it without being seen. Damn snipers. They don't always appear in my radar, but they sure-as-hell see me. I managed to get through the rooms and now I'm sitting outside a room where two guys are talking. They don't appear to be guards. Time will tell.

And why does Jensen insist on standing up when hacking a work station? Is sitting on the floor too good for him?

Toger, that's where I lured and tased the whole upper floor. Perhaps your approach is attempting to retain too much dignity? The standing up hacking thing bothered me too. A hacking minigame that takes N seconds, the guard patrols that cycle on N-1 seconds, the dermal camouflage aug that lasts for roughly N-1 seconds as well? It's all too damn neat, but it does manufacture tension by the bucket.

At one point, I had inadvertently lured one of the guards over; however, he'd already alerted everyone and their mother so taking him out didn't end well for me. I think the way I'm currently headed will allow me to double back and tase the lot of them on the 2nd floor then take out the ones on the lower floor. That's my plan, anyway.

First, I have to live through another long day at work.[Image Can Not Be Found]

Okay, so did anyone else read the news that apparently the boss fights in DXHR were outsourced to another company? Not done by Eidos Montreal?? (I read this on Rock paper shotgun).

Is that bizarre? It seems so to me.

I hadn't read that, but I'll be honest - it shows. Nearly every other challenge in the game offers multiple solution paths (hack, sneak, lure, air vent, etc). But the boss fights are boss fights. A lot of reloading and a lot of heavy firepower.

The only real positive I can give is that you don't have to boost certain augs to use heavy firepower, so theoretically a sneaky hacker could just pull out the plasma gun and be done with it. But the dermal armor, long sprint, and other such protective/maneuverability augs make a huge difference. There are only four boss fights in the game, and none of them ruin it, but they're darned irritating.

Haven't read the RPS post (trying to avoid any spoilage), but I'd heard about it last week.

edit: Who am I trying to kid? I didn't watch the video from the out-sourcee, but I did look at the comments for hints on ways to get through the boss fights. [Image Can Not Be Found]
