Pokey I went in for just a bit with only Mirdan armor (trying out a temple knight) and a fire resist ring. No way I could have made it.
Last night I logged off when I got invaded. When I logged back on, the same guy invaded again. This happened several times until I went offline completely.
Rule #2: Double-tap
Did some more hunting around the Shrine of Storms last night in a bid to get more bladestone but didn't have much luck. Went back to Stonefang and upgraded my Kite Shield to +6 or 7. It was a close call between hanging around for the Dark Silver Shield or running with my already upgraded Heater Shield +4. Oh and I found the White Bow which thankfully I can use because I have 20 strength! I was unsure about pumping so many souls into strength given that I'm a DEX build but now I have a great bow without having to upgrade my short or long compound bows, I just wish I had heavy arrows. 🙁
@Botch: you're really not having much luck with black phantoms are you? I have a job on connecting at all these days, for some reason it just comes up with an error message and puts me in offline mode.
From the Valley of Defilement wiki entry:
The Giant Depraved Ones can look exactly like their smaller buddies with some tricks of perspective and distance. Notice the Great Club they carry.
No shit Sherlock, that's exactly what happened to me the first (and last time) I went there. "Hey, come here you little turd… you're bigger than I expected... and you're still getting bigger. And bigger. Oh dear." *THWOP* Dead.
Gregg, you can trade with Sparkly the Crow for White Arrows, which I bet would go great with your bow. I don't recall what it is she wants in trade, but the wiki will surely point you in the right direction.
I never had good luck with lava in these games. I'm one of those people who, when told by a server at a restaurant "don't touch the plate, it's really hot," I immediately have to touch the plate. Thus when I see lava in a game I'm always down to the age-old question: "is this Metroid lava that drains your health slowly, or Super Mario Bros lava that kills you instantly?"
The only way to find out is to try.
Your repeat-invasion thing is interesting, Botch, because the same thing happened to me in Dark Souls the other evening. I believe both games connect players of roughly equal level and according to various other parameters, so I'd imagine that sometimes, especially in Demon's Souls with fewer playing online these days, the server can only find one possible pairing. That guy must have really, really, really wanted to invade something.
Interestingly, in Dark Souls, the artifact you use to invade another's world is a consumable, and they're not easy to come by. I haven't really noticed this cutting down on how often I'm invaded, but there you go. Me, I haven't invaded anyone. I'm a lover, not a fighter. Besides I'd lose and it would be humiliating.
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
geggis: IIRC, the Shrine of Storms is the place to find bladestone, but it always seems as though you find a ton of ore when you're not looking for it, then when you go looking, it dries up. 🙁
I do seem to be getting invaded quite a bit. I've had my body for quite some time now, so that doesn't help. And I just recently bought a new wireless router which just works famously.
Steerpike: Good points. Although I seem to run into quite a few of those ghostly white figures running around. I don't care to invade either. Not my style. After getting into Demon's Souls, my interest in Dark Souls has increased exponentially, but I promised myself I wouldn't get it until I finished at least 1 playthrough.
I mentioned that I'm trying out some different play styles, and I'm having great fun at it. I should stick with my primary character but I can't seem to help myself. This game encourages experimentation. And I think I like strong melee and backup magic/ranged better. I have one strength melee guy (temple knight) and another dex melee guy (hunter) in addition to my main one (royalty). I guess you can do it, but focusing on just one aspect to the detriment of all others seems an unlikely recipe for success.
I killed Satsuki the other night after he tried to murder me. Treachery seems to be the norm around here. 🙂
Rule #2: Double-tap
It's been ages since I did a lot of Demon's Souls and I totally forgot about some of the encounters I've had, Satsuki being one of them. It's a shame that a lot of Demon's Souls' cool stuff is nestled in the extremes of the world tendencies because the Primeval Demons look great and sound really interesting.
I've only ever made one character and it's the one I'm working through the game with right now! I haven't a clue what all the other classes are like. Sometimes I wish for a character with nothing but brute strength and resilience while other times I wish for one with powerful magic. I'm not sure I could play through the game that many times though, it's repetitive enough as it is!
Leechmonger is dead. I kept my body the whole way. It feels good to get out of that place and back to the Nexus. The Lava bow is really great against creatures in the Valley. I forgot to stock up on arrows but it didn't take many. I'm keeping my distance from the giant Depraved Ones and using the bow. I didn't realize how dangerous they were and nearly got a club to the head.
The Gloom armor looks really neat and offers good protection for poison and plague. I didn't like the helmet but I am wearing the silver coronet to bump up my magic.
Bah, gah and pah! The Gloom armour is too heavy for my low-ish endurance character. If I was to equip it I wouldn't be able to dodge and that's kind of how I roll. Get it? How I roll? I crack me up sometimes.
Personally I'm not sure about the shoulder pads that look like hands ready to cup my ears but it is a great armour set and perfect for the Valley. Perhaps I'll have to mix in the gauntlets and leggings with my Black Leather set (which is resistant to poison).
I rescued Biorr and Yuria last night. I don't think I ever would have figured out how to get to her on my own, even with messages from other players.
I got invaded yet again, but immediately logged out and didn't have trouble afterward. I know it's part of the game, but I really don't care to engage in PvP.
Lately when I die, which hasn't been too often, I just use an ephemeral stone or whatever they're called. I have so many of them from drops that it seems pointless not to use them.
It is kind of disappointing that many cool things only happen under extreme world tendency conditions.
I'm about to go after the 1-3 boss. Hope I make it...
Rule #2: Double-tap
I'm working my way through 5-2 and it is a much nastier place than 5-1. I died several times to a Giant Depraved One in front of a fog gate. Finally managed to sneak past him. It is impossible to fight in the water as your movement is very slow. I made my way to the second fog gate and it has two Giant Depraved Ones plus a Shaman. At least there is more land to maneuver. There is a shortcut somewhere ahead. Hope I can find it. I want to leave this horrible place. I have to take a break.
I killed Penetrator in about 20 seconds, with Biorr's help. I also killed Maneater. Maneaters. Not too hard this time. I played ring around the brazier which helped. They fell to my Crushing Knight Sword +5, yeah! Old Monk is next. The black phantom squid-head on the stairs in 3-3 got me. Careless.
I got invaded again. The guy invades, then sends me a friend request. Cheeky.
The whole world tendency thing is still a mystery to me. I get changes sometimes and I have no idea how. I was able to rescue Rydell though.
Rule #2: Double-tap
The guy invades, then sends me a friend request. Cheeky.
Jeez, it's like... "I'll make a new friend! By killing this stranger!"
You and Pokey are unstoppable. I'm amazed at how fast (and how well) you're both proceeding through the game. You're both farther than I ever made it.
To tell the truth, I never understood world tendency either. I even had difficulty reading the meter for it. In the end I just figured the world would be whatever the world would be, though From Software used to play little games with it - all tendencies went solid black on Halloween, for example, and on Valentine's Day they all went pure white. I always got a kick out of those.
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
I read up a little more on tendency. It seems as though playing offline is the way to go if you want to reliably affect world tendency, otherwise some unknown global shift will affect you at the beginning of every play session. So previous settings will be lost.
On the one hand, I know it's possible to play through the game just fine without hitting all the world tendency events, but on the other hand, I hate to miss stuff. I think I'm going to play offline for a while.
They set world tendency to Pure White from the Winter solstice until Jan 2. That's when I first really started playing, so I benefitted.
Steerpike, I don't remember whether you mentioned, do you play Dark Souls online? Is world tendency similar?
Rule #2: Double-tap
I got the shortcut bridge down. I am really happy about that. I did mess up after killing the two Giant Deprived ones and got killed by a little one when I got stuck in bow zoom. It only took me about five minutes to get back to that point which took about two hours previously. That shanty town is rather claustophobic with all the nooks and crannies hiding enemies. The camera doesn't cooperate either, especially with the low beams.
I am ready to attack the demon but I have a problem. There are waist high drop offs on the path to the shortcut bridge. On my way up, it took more than two dozen tries to get up the drop off and now coming down, I have another and can't get by it. I've climbed them before, usually with little trouble. I walk against them as suggested, but it isn't working. Any ideas on what I'm doing wrong?
SB, I've watched videos of online play and I prefer not having ghosts running around, much less black phantoms.
I'm thinking I might get Dark Souls.
Edit…..problem solved. I wasn't perfectly facing the walkway. Guess I was nervous about falling off. Off to see the Demon.
Botch, there is no world tendency in Dark Souls. All in all I approve of the change. I think From's decision was based on the fact that, frankly, almost no one really understood tendency, and it was so unpredictable. Basically the game is outrageously spiteful no matter what happens. 🙂
I love playing online. I love seeing the ghosts, I love reading the messages, I love feeling like I'm alone but surrounded by hundreds of people. I'm in a place called Anor Londo right now, and every ghost I see reminds me I'm not quite there by myself. That said, Dark Souls is much friendlier to the idea of people who prefer to play offline: a number of NPCs are available to summon (if you're alive), and there are many messages left by the game itself. So you don't miss that aspect if you prefer to play offline.
While From indicated that Dark Souls was harder than Demon's Souls, I don't agree. The two games are remarkably similar and remarkably different, but in the end I think Dark Souls is no harder. You always have your body - none of this "down to 50% health" stuff - but you're dead most of the time. Being alive is important because only when you're alive do you see certain (mostly online) things; only then can you summon others for help; only then do certain items drop.
I would say Dark Souls is crueler than its predecessor, but not harder. And after - according to the timer - about 80 hours of play, I consider myself qualified to say that if Demon's Souls was brilliant, Dark Souls is a masterpiece.
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
Steerpike, I like the ghosts and messages and bloodstains too, for pretty much the same reason you gave.
I killed Old Monk. I was playing offline so it wasn't a real person. Took me two tries. Since I've pretty much switched to my strength melee character, I just went toe-to-toe with him and was careful of my stamina.
I also killed Leechmonger. That was pretty much a hack-and-slash affair. It was never clear to me if that gunk he threw at me was poison or just, uh, leeched my health. 5-1 was considerably easier than some of the other levels I've gone through recently. The Gloom armor certainly did help, thanks Yurt.
I think I'm headed for 1-4 next.
