Let us know how you go - I'm intrigued by this game, but haven't taken the plunge and bought it yet. Might be a good night-cap to my DA:O partying. Or something.

There's a great rhythm to Demon's Souls that I've not seen in many other games and as hard as it is, it's not a game that is a pain to pick up again if you don't touch it for a couple of months or whatever. I put it on the back burner for quite a while and got back into the swing of things straight away. It has that same sort of pick and play quality as Motor Storm: Pacific Rift in that it doesn't require that you be heavily involved with it at all times to keep enjoying it.
Back to my playthrough: The Flame Lurker in the bowels of Stonefang ruined me. By far the most irritating Demon yet, mainly because it kept spamming this ridiculously powerful area effect spell/magick/WMD. I've just fought the pair of Maneaters on that narrow bridge in Latria and that was really tense and very enjoyable, despite the many deaths I endured dodging their attacks and inadvertantly throwing myself into the surrounding gloom. I foresee myself venturing back into the Valley of Defilement again now that I'm a little more battle hardened.
Gregg, if you can find it, I suggest getting help for Flame Lurker. He's difficult on his own but comparatively easy to beat if you've summoned a friendly helper. I don't know how many people are still playing Demon's Souls, though, so that could be tough.
Last I played I was near the end of Boletaria and hung up on Penetrator. I've played the Shrine of Storms all the way through to the Archdemon, but haven't actually faced him yet. Latria and the Valley of Defilement both remain largely unvisited - I checked them out, got creamed, and headed back to more familiar pastures. I need to get back into Demon's Souls soon.

My connection isn't strong enough to sustain a session on Demon's Souls without it kicking me back to the title screen so I sort of have to go in offline. I actually killed the Flame Lurker on my own, with daggers (yes, I know) and it took me so many attempts. Like the spider, I got extremely pissed off with the spamming more than anything else. That treacherous mine shaft that you can carefully drop down to quickly get to the Flame Lurker became a simple reflex action as it got drilled into my muscle memory.
When I was showing a friend Demon's Souls over the weekend my connection lasted long enough to be invaded by a Black Phantom for the first time. It happened twice at the Shrine of Storms where those apparitions and that Reaper are. The first Black Phantom didn't react to me and died very quickly but the second I couldn't land any hits on because of my wobbly connection causing lag so I eventually died from bleeding. While I was being chased by the second Phantom I bought a ton of Half Moon Grasses (sp?) from that dude in the corridor before the apparition 'chamber' just in case I lost all my souls but thankfully a stain was left behind. It was pretty damn tense when I thought I could lose 25,000 souls.
From what I've seen when connected there appears to be a lot of ghosts running around, blood stains and messages dotted about so I can only assume that there is still a sizeable chunk of people still playing.
Oh, and you should also check out Latria. It's very dark and creepy but one of the most interesting places. Just be careful of the Cthulu creatures wandering about...
Okay, so... the Vanguard was supposed to kill me, right? I had no chance whatsoever. One swing and I'm in the Nexus. There are apparently 5 "places" connected to the Nexus...is there a difference in where you go first? Does that choice exist? I guess I'll find out.
I can see what the talk was about from the tutorial alone. I have a feeling the combat will continue to be unforgiving, though not unfair. I've exercised mostly patience thus far: a well-timed parry and a riposte seem to do the job...for now.
If being wrong's a crime I'm serving forever
Slow and steady, my friend, slow and steady.
The Vanguard was supposed to kill you, it's true. I understand that you can theoretically kill it, but frankly I don't see how. Even if you do, you start out dead.
As you've doubtless gathered, you must finish the first section of the Palace of Boletaria before you can visit the other worlds or upgrade your character, and you have to do it dead. The first main demon you'll face is the Phalanx.
There are two ULTRA CRUCIAL magic items to be found here: the Cling Ring (bumps your health to 75% when dead) and the Thief Ring (makes it harder for demons to see you). I... can't remember exactly where either one is, so I'll check it out and report back.
Gosh, I miss Demon's Souls. I have to get back into that game.

Rather than start a new one, I'll just revive this old one. I'm playing as a knight and on my 5th run in 1-1. This time I was killed by a knight on the rooftop. If I had known he was so tough, I would have used a firebomb. Oh well, that is knowledge I can use for the next run. I was hoping to find a shortcut so I could shorten the route. Maybe next time.
How do I find my level? The only thing I see is a souls level. I found a bastard sword but probably can't use it even if I wanted to.
Edit....He killed me again. I run out of endurance and can't do anything. Any tips? Roll around? Run around to get up my endurance. Of course he will be downing healing moon grass. I did toss a few fire bombs at him but they didn't do much damage.
Hey Pokey! Welcome to Demon's Souls!
Your Soul Level and your Level are essentially the same thing... and you cannot improve your Soul Level until you beat the first boss, a creature called The Phalanx. The first portion of Boletaria Palace is designed to prep you for Phalanx and for what's to come.
First and foremost: http://demonssouls.wikidot.com/
There is no shame in using that. It's Demon's Souls we're talking about here; you need every possible advantage.
In addition to Every Possible Advantage, you need two key magic items that are only available in that first, pre-Phalanx section of Boletaria: the Cling Ring and the Thief's Ring. I can't tell you how to find either by memory, but I can tell you that the game is practically impossible without them. The Wiki will give you instructions.
Don't give up. Demon's Souls is never easy, but once you get past the spot you're in right now, it becomes... clear.

The Blue Eye knight on top of the castle battlement? Those guys eventually became semi-easy fights, but early on they can crush you into paste. The Red Eye knights are significantly more dangerous still - they're worth killing for the 2,000-5,000 souls and kickass treasure they carry, but they can light you up.
Pokey, if my memory serves (and it might not) the first "step" toward getting the Cling Ring lies opposite that Blue guy. If you look over the battlements, instead of a sheer drop there should be a balcony of some sort. You need to reach it and, I believe, cut some chains... the Wiki can steer you right.
The Cling Ring boosts your health to 75% when you're dead, instead of the usual 50%. It can make all the difference in the world, because you're dead most of the time.

FYI, Pokey - there's a shift in World Tendency:
In recognition of the title's tremendous accomplishments and in sincere gratitude to the fan community for two years of unyielding passion and support, ATLUS today revealed World Tendency plans for the month of October. Starting today until October 17, Boletaria will shift to Pure White World Tendency, easing the game's difficulty and unlocking otherwise inaccessible areas and items. From then until the end of the month, the World Tendency will become Pure Black, making the game more challenging and again, opening up otherwise hidden secrets.
