Taurus Demon beat my behind many, many times before I brought him down. The chief problem, which I think Pokey described, is that you sort of get tangled in his legs while trying to maneuver, because he takes up so much space on that bridge. Even the ideal strategy for defeating him isn't easy for that very reason. It takes maybe 4-6 hits to kill him, and getting up the ladder that many times is a real effort.

Sounds: you often hear noises from other players' games, particularly in the Undead Burg/Parish area. Whenever you hear a church bell ringing, for example, that means someone somewhere has rung one of the bells. I'm not sure about the breathing, though. I'll have to listen for that!

I've been toddling through my NG+ and joined the Forest Hunter Covenant. Part of your responsibility in that one is to kick the ass of anyone who wanders into Darkroot Garden, and the Covenant will actually force you to invade other worlds to accomplish this. You're just standing there, minding your own business, and up pops, "You are invading another world." You'd think this would give me some kind of advantage, but the truth is I stand at about 3 wins and 1,526,899 losses. And two of those wins were by default - I appeared in the other world and was told I'd won, because some other Covenant member had already beaten me to the kill. I'll take what I can get though. 🙂

Last night while drifting off to sleep I think I worked out what I was supposed to do against the Taurus Demon. There was a message telling me to use 'plunging attacks' against it and at the time it didn't make sense ('plunging'?) but now it does... I think, I hope.

Botch, next time it's quiet and you're hollow, pause for a moment and listen to see if you can make out that breathing noise -- it's relatively quiet (and much quieter than the knights' breathing) but it's there, I'm sure of it.

Steerpike, do you have any idea what From Software's circumstances were with the Demon's Souls IP/assets and Sony? It's just that Dark Souls is such a similar game without being exactly the same. All the conventions it shares (of which there are many) have been carefully renamed almost to avoid any connection with the exclusive title on the Sony box. Is there anything to it or am I barking up the wrong tree?

I am having a terrible time with Taurus Demon. The last two times I tried, I totally missed him on the first plunge. How do you do that? I am going to try fire bombs. He is so fast and you have little time to do anything.

I am human now but I am playing offline while I battle Taurus Demon. I got a look at my face and I look like a hollow.

You can roll through Taurus Demon's legs.
I made the circuit from Firelink to Burg and back a few times for soul collecting.  I can tell that I'm, gradually, getting stronger.
I defeated the Imposing Thing in the Parish, and I'm guessing it was the way you hinted at Steerpike. It was by accident frankly. I did hear a bell toll once. There are some very difficult foes here - caped minor knights or something. Greg, I picked up Force and it works well against them. I found the bonfire just as I was getting low on provisions. I am really liking the Flask as well. It really tightens the "how long can I venture out" dynamic. There's a blacksmith at the bonfire and something big and mean just past him.  It shot at me but I won't say what with. 🙂
I've been finding a few titanite shards or whatever they're called (not to mention a crap-load of hollow gear) but I'm holding off on reinforcing until I decide what weapon i want to use. I may have to alter that strategy if I don't find something soon. I bought a heater shield from the Burg merchant - lightweight and 100% Dmg reduction.
Greg, I'm always hollow. 🙂 It keeps the invaders away. I'll try listening.

Pokey, you're not missing anything, it's just really hard. Take out those skeleton archers on top of the tower before you lure Taurus out. He can jump up onto the tower with you, so don't assume you're safe up there... but the plunge-attack is the way to beat him. He's a huge turning point. Once you've got him down, the whole Undead City is open to you. Look on the bright side! After Taurus Demon, you can look forward to dragons, SB's Imposing Thing, brutally tough cape-wearing knights, and the first Bell. Then there's giant wolves, spider ladies, trees that eat your face, snake people... I'm not making this sound good, am I?

Gregg, to my knowledge From Software owns the Souls IP and has a friendly relationship with Sony, but isn't beholden to them. I think they did a spiritual successor with Dark Souls simply because they wanted to, not because there was any ownership that wasn't theirs.

Well, finally!! Taurus Demon is dead. I could just never get the right timing to get past him consistently. Everything else was working. It took three plunges to finally kill him and I used the pine stuff on my battle axe. It will be great to see some new territory, though I am sure more demons await.

Bell Gargoyle: 1  Me: 0

Got careless on the way back and died twice, losing a fair amount of souls and 2 humanity.  The trek back to that boss, though short, is a serious pain.  I think he's completely out of my league for now.  My attacks just weren't doing enough damage.  I actually wasn't doing too bad until, well, I'll just say it got ugly at a certain point.

I did find my first Fire Keeper Soul.  It was a tough battle to get to it.  Lightning helped.  I upgraded my Estus Flask with it.

Greg, I haven't heard any breathing, at least I don't think so.  Standing still I've heard what sounds like the wind.  How loud is it?

I have the Drake sword. It is really powerful---one hitting most everything. I think I'm going to need it in the next area.

I have some shards and would like to upgrade my weapon. Is the blacksmith at Firelink the closest or should I wait for the next one?

Later...I see SB already answered my question about the blacksmith. Good to know.

I wonder if the winged spear will be as good as it was in Demon's Souls.

Nice work, Pokey, on Taurus Demon and the Drake Sword! That latter is a fantastic weapon. Its only real drawback is that to upgrade it you need dragon scales rather than the usual Titanite hunks, and dragon scales can be tough to come by.

SB, I was hung up on the Bell Gargoyle for a long, long time. It's a very tough fight. If you're alive when you approach, you should see a special summon sign up the ladders, near the fog door. That will allow you to summon Solaire of Astora, the friendly NPC who gave you the soapstones and spends a lot of time staring at the sun. He's available to help with a number of tough boss battles. Summoning him doesn't interfere with summoning real players either, so feel free to do that too if you find other summon signs up there.

Also, if you haven't, be sure to thoroughly explore the church. A few interesting plot events around there.

Pokey I am super jealous. I haven't acquired any cool weapons. Without giving it away, how did you come by it?  I know there are several difficult foes in the Burg & Parish I haven't defeated yet.  One of them in particular is as hard as a boss. I didn't even attempt to fight the dragon, although from hints I gather that a ranged attack could make it easy.

I did figure out how to get back to the Undead Asylum, but it's now populated with much more powerful enemies. I also found an optional boss but I won't spoil any more for now.

Steerpike, I'm intrigued by your statement about the church. I found a guy in a prison cell. Is there more?

SB, I have to admit that I got a tip from the wiki. I don't think anyone would know to do it otherwise. If you want to be spoiled...

From the Undead Burg bonfire, go out the door to the underbridge. At the end is the dragon's tail. Shoot it with 20 arrows to get the sword.

I just killed the tusked monster. I'm tired of getting poisoned and loosing health. Is there a bonfire close to the entrance of the Undead Parish?

The Parish bonfire is not far, but there are a fair number of foes in your path, and there are some branching paths. If you come to a fork, stay right. There will probably be msgs pointing the way.  With that sword it shouldn't be bad.

That first trip to the Parish bonfire is a doozy. It's a long, long walk from the Dragon's bridge through the courtyards and past all the enemies, but once you've done it once you'll have the opportunity to open two very handy shortcuts - one back to Firelink, and another that makes it simpler to get between Burg and Parish. I'll go out on a limb here and say that, aside from Firelink, the Parish bonfire is the one I depended on most. It's a very convenient location, near practically everything on that side of the game, and even comes equipped with a friendly blacksmith down in the basement.

Botch, if you freed the prisoner in the Church I think you've covered the highlights. He'll find his way back to Firelink sooner or later. I've mentioned him in the Diaries. Lautrec of Carim is his name.

Note - this is easy to miss - there is a second bonfire in the Parish, far closer than the first. It's not as convenient, but it is there. Cut across the under-bridge and through the room with the rats, then climb the ladder to the Parish. Instead of going to the right, which will take you up the steps to where the Armored Tusk was hanging out, turn left. You'll find a room with a bonfire. If you look out through one of its doors, you'll see where you are in relation to everything else. Don't poke out too far, though, or the Hellkite Dragon will eat you.

I didn't find the bonfire yet. I went up some tower stairs and ran smack into a Black Knight. I ran and he must have fallen off the narrow ledge of the under-bridge. I got a Black Knight Greatsword and a titanite shard. The sword requires a lot more strength to wield, so may not be useful. Then I headed up the steps where the Armored Tusk used to be and got killed by what looked like an ordinary guard. Back through the rats again.

Pokey, I meant not far from the Armored Boar (my Imposing Thing).  That black knight at the top of the tower took my lunch money.  Those ordinary guards are tough.  There are some difficult battles inside the church too so be careful.

Instead of going to the right, which will take you up the steps to where the Armored Tusk was hanging out, turn left. You’ll find a room with a bonfire.

Isn't there a big gate in the way?  Or does opening up that other gate near the church open this one up too?  I didn't go back to check.

The big gate will not open. I made it all the way to the side door of the church. When I tried to enter, looking for the bonfire, I ran into a massive Black Knight. I ran, thinking I was dead, but evaded him. Guess I shouldn't go in that door. I'm checking for nearby ladders in case I meet him again.

Pokey that knight with the tower shield is tough but slow, but you're right that the bonfire is not inside the church.  Check around the area near that side door.

So I assume there's a way to open that other big gate, I just haven't found it yet.  I actually kind of forgot about it.  I think the level design in this game is bloody brilliant.  And completely mad.

I found the door that the basement key opens.  The description on that key is very accurate.  You can open a couple of shortcuts down there though.  This whole place is such a tortuous maze, it's easy to forget where you have and haven't been.

Now when I try to sprint across the bridge where the dragon lurks, he strafes me every time.  Before, I was able to get to the stairs on the right.  What's changed?

Did you find the way to open the big gate? It is back on the path I came to the church side door.

I tried several times to run up the bridge from the stairs. It doesn't seem possible.

I am at the bonfire now and trying to upgrade my weapons. I'm confused because the only weapon that shows is the short spear. I want to upgrade my winged spear. Can't Andre do that?

I am hearing the bell ring now.

Edit....I tried it again and it is working now. I must have done something wrong. Winged spear is upgraded. Now I am going to open the big gate.
