Botch, I've been checking into what you have been doing due to my email updates. Glad to hear you are giving the game a second chance. Yes, I did play and finish DS2. I thought the best part of the game was the later part with the Dragon Aerie, the Castle, the Ancient Dragon and the Last Giant. You have some good play ahead of you. I don't have a PS4, so won't be playing DS3 on it. I doubt my PC can handle it. Anyone playing on PC?
I'll definitely be day 1 (on PS4) but the first week overall I expect to put in a light amount of play since that's the last week of my current school semester, I'll have lots of final exam studying to do. I'm back in school for the first time in 13 years and it takes a lot of energy!

Magus and Congregation: dead. This was an odd one and didn't even feel like a proper boss. I brought along blue sword dude which helped. Exploring Brightstone Cove which is interesting by which I mean cramped and nightmarish.
I hate to admit it but this game continues to grow on me. I haven't forgotten the things that bug me, but I'm beginning to see what the devs were going for. It was poorly executed in many ways but I can still see the care and effort taken.
Rule #2: Double-tap
Freja: dead. Thanks for the crowd control Boyd. Quite a spectacular show, but ultimately not very much of a challenge. I had more trouble with Vengarl's body afterward, having exhausted my estus supply. I like the spell recharge items. Good trade-off between limited and unlimited spell use.
Rule #2: Double-tap
The congregation fight is laughably easy as long as you summon Benhart; Brightstone was probably my favourite mid-game area. I died a lot and became very familiar. The Duke's Dear Freja was also one of the more enjoyable bosses, I thought.
So much progress!

Here I am, a copy of Dark Souls III in my hands - Miyazaki-san Dark Souls no less - and I'm playing Dark Souls 2 and really into it, two years after quitting in disgust. I have bashed this game like no other on this forum yet here I find myself. I'll stop blabbing now.
I just made it through the Gutter. It's like a cross between Blighttown and that hanging cage in Time Bandits. It took me a while to realize there's not boss, just a fog wall to Black Gulch: neon green and black Black Gulch.
I actually liked the Gutter, even though I died several times, once to that super-aggressive NPC invader. It's a little too much of a one-note tune to compare with Blighttown or Valley of Defilement, but interesting nonetheless. And I actually used my torch to find my way. Now I've got two rings boosting my poison resist and those stupid spitting statues still wreck me. Anyway Dark Souls. It's not like I'll ever keep up with Xtal's pace anyway...
Rule #2: Double-tap
Don't be so pessimistic, Botch! I'm only around level 240 on NG+++.
I have that obscene character because I've only ever created two Dark Souls 2 characters. Whereas I've created over a dozen Dark Souls characters. I think Dark Souls the first lends itself to a more experimental slant, while Dks 2 lets you re-roll stats, so it seems almost pointless to create new characters.

I'm at the entrance to Drangleic castle. I have an idea how to get in but it's because I cheated not because I'm clever. Not sure I would have figured it out on my own.
I have one word for the Rotten: underwhelming. Something interesting happened when I attempted to light the last Primal Bonfire...
Rule #2: Double-tap
I liked the Gutter too, it was eerie and haunted-seeming. Seeing those platforms, almost like they were floating there in the darkness, and that fall down, down, down, to wherever it ended, plus the sound effects all combined to create a great sense of space. Black Gulch was a place I'd heard about endlessly before actually visiting, so when I arrived my reaction was "this isn't as bad as I've heard." Nothing could be as bad as I'd heard. Certainly the poison was obnoxious, but it's a brief area -- or, rather, it can be a brief area -- with a lot more to it if you choose to explore.
You're well beyond the point I ever reached, Botch. Dark Souls 2 kicked my ass at a certain point and I found myself drifting, as I do. I really hope the same doesn't happen with DkS3, because I'd like to be proven wrong on my First Rodeo Syndrome theory.
Life is the misery we endure between disappointments.
I don't remember exactly how their standoff went for me, though I'm pretty sure it just went nowhere after I missed a part of their story. Writing that now I actually remember: there was a specific area in Brightstone Cove Tseldora where they were apparently supposed to fight each other, and you could intervene or just watch, and then whomever survived would give you something. I was never able to see this much to my frustration.
I still don't know which story cue I missed.

Just so Xtal. Although I couldn't tell you all the steps required to reach that point. I only remember seeing Creighton in Huntsman's Copse (where he's imprisoned) and then at the crossroads bonfire in Shaded Woods. After meeting Pate in the Forest of Giants, I saw him at Earthen Peak hanging out near the Mimic and perhaps one other place? I did summon him for the Giant boss fight which may have something to do with it.
Rule #2: Double-tap
Picked up again where I left off in Amana. Amala? Whatever. It is one of the more annoying parts of the game. The boss went down from my miracles without much trouble. My cleric will blast some lightning right up in your ugly face. Fast forward a bit and I've acquired the King's Ring and am at the door to what I assume is the boss in Aldia Keep. I remember this area long ago from the demo.
I've become quite fond of this game actually. I suppose I've accepted it for what it is. As a Dark Souls game it's pretty much crap, but taken on its own, well, at least you can tell it's trying. It's a big, rambling, sloppy mess but it is trying. And this game is long. It just keeps going. The variety of areas far outstrips Dark Souls unless my memory has completely failed me.
Rule #2: Double-tap
Shrine of Amana, I think it is. It's too bad you didn't like the area, Botch. I'm not surprised. That area was brilliant in the game's early days. One of the patches that came out a few months after its release completely changed this area and removed all its challenge. It was one of the best balanced zones of both Dark Souls games at the time, I thought.
There's still some cool places ahead so hopefully you enjoy those!
