Sorry Toger. I'm here. A nasty cold that hung on for 10 days coupled with spring allergies meant that I wasn't too comfortable sitting at the computer much. I peek in here a few times a day even if I don't sign in. It's been quiet here, and I'll take some of the blame for that.
As for the weather, Memphis has been lucky this more/stronger than normal storm season. While we've had mucho rain and awful winds, all of the tornados missed us. I feel so sorry for those in Mississippi and elsewhere, but especially for those in Alabama. We were much luckier this year.
That said, I live about 800 feet from the normal bank of the Mississippi river. Today that distance is 600-650 feet, depending on where along the river you measure. The river is now a few feet above flood stage, and the it will keep rising for the next 10-12 days. It's gonna get dicey. Some Memphis streets are already closed due to flooding, but no major problems. The downtown area is on a high bluff that offers some protection, so I'm not too worried about my neighborhood, although that could change. The river does what it does.
I read the first parts of your travel log. I always like your squinty-eyed, wry, irreverent take on the world. I wondered…would you be willing to go the organized tour route for your next trip overseas? Or would you rather go your own way? I've never been interested in being cooped up with strangers. They can be delightful, or they can be crabby, and gouty and complaining ("Oh, my aching feet. I just must rest. Oh, no, you go on. I'll be just fine on my own.") On the whole, I just don't like most people very much. [Image Can Not Be Found] Awaiting your next installments….
Oh, and although in another thread I said I was giving up on Half-Life, I've been playing it maybe an hour at a time, but not every day. I've decided I don't much care for FPS. Nothing to do but run/shoot/hide/die…over and over. I am close to 2/3 finished, low on health, low on ammo. I'll keep going for a bit. This is the first game (other than casual games) where I've not taken the first note. I like taking notes.

Spike, good to hear the tornadoes didn't get near Memphis. I've been enjoying Toger's adventures in Italy, but I'm with you on group travel. Never tried it, but I know I wouldn't like being told where to go. We traveled Europe on our own, having a fairly good idea of the spots we want to hit and jumping on trains to get there. We never reserve ahead and have always found a great place to stay. We also ran into tricky situations, like how some of the city transportation works. But that is part of the adventure.
Glad to hear you're still above the water level! My friends are moving back to B'ham this summer (I think they're nuts). All their friends/family in Jackson and B'ham made it through unscathed.
I'd be willing to do another organized trip, especially if it's somewhere I've not been before. Putting a trip like this last one together by myself, I'm sure I would have missed a lot or tried to do too much (although how I could have done much more than we did, I can't fathom) For the most part, the people on this trip were tolerable. I think I only had one or two episodes where I needed to be "talked off the ledge". Like you, I don't like people much. They can be decidedly stupid and that's the part that makes me crazy(er).

I've been posting bits of River news in our STALKER thread in Bollocks. River should crest tonight, earlier than estimated, then we start the long process of cleaning up the mess. I am high and dry. Travel is slower than normal, but we can get out, and goods can get in. My neighbors and I are luckier than others.
But you remind me, Toger: I've been watching the Saving The Bay series and have learned a great bit about estuaries. Close-up footage of the bays gave me a different perspective on the area. I started wondering what melting glaciers/global warming would do not only to the bays and the wildlife there, but also to the cities on the bay. And of course the human wildlife. Depends.
According to this article, most of SF's issues would be weather pattern-related and not rising seas. Since moving to SF, our weather has changed somewhat. We are getting more hot days than when I first moved here 25 (!) years ago. Apparently, the coast along Louisiana, Texas, Florida and North Carolina are more prone to inundation.
